Wit h not a moment to spare, the set flashed past and by the time it got to the other side of Cowburn Tunnel, and headed for Peak Forest near Buxton, on the western side of the Pennine chain, it was running 37 minutes early. With fine, but increasingly colder conditions now at this time, the set gets off westward along the Hope Valley towards Hope, Edale and the 3,207 yard long, Cowburn Tunnel which exits east now far from Chapel-en-le-Frith and Chinley where the set will turn south towards Peak Forest. Bringing up the rear of the GBRF operated, Network Rail Infra-Structure Monitoring Test Train set, is class 73, 73952, ex-E3581, once known as 'County of Essex' but is now 'Janis Kong' with 73951, ex-E3572 'Malcolm Brinded' at the front on the 1Q41, Derby R.T.C. via Hope Valley to Crewe C.S.(LNWR Sidings) working. More rails and bags of ballast are lying about track-side in this area so one supposes N.R. will be out and about at some point, re-doing the permanent way. Off to the left, just out of shot in the distance, are the quarries at Castleton and its connection with this line at Earles Sidings, that area, like Peak Forest, provides almost all the freight traffic for this line and it is continually very busy, relatively speaking of course.

I have taken the liberty of combining the 2 video files taken at the time separated by a few minutes due to lack of any action of the 73s while they waited for the green on W0214, the irritating camera shutter noise has also been edited out, leaving very short blanks in the sound, but as there were 21 shutter releases and two incoming email notifications on the phone, during the 4m 38s sequence, I assumed this was better than having to listen to repeated shutter release sounds!
The Video shows passage of the two class 73s, coming along off the Stocksbridge Branch and its controlling signal, W0218, back towards the main line and on to be halted at the Darnall Flyover, by signal W0214, due to two passenger DMUS having just gone through eastwards, one after the other, in quick time. Whilst 'The Minions' were waiting at the signal, an unlooked for E.C.S. working came along. operated by the EMR and heading towards Sheffield having come up the 'Old Road', presumably for platform positioning purposes, and along to here from Beighton and Woodhouse junctions. A fine contrast with the 73s yellow and its lights reflected in the shiny paintwork and windows of the 'Meridian'.
Early Morning, for me at any rate, but this was something not to miss, at Woodburn Junction for the prospect of two, canary yellow liveried Network Rail Test Trains, first the 'Track Recording Unit and followed around 20 mins later, by 'The Minions'; both sets from the same origin, Doncaster West Yard, and destination, Derby R.T.C., though the latter having an 8 hour jaunt, 'around the world', whilst the former was out for 5 hours on a more direct route.
The two test train workings seen in the pictures are-
* a Network Rail Test Train, with class 950, 950001 and coach 999601, the 'Track Recording Unit' on the 2Q08, Doncaster West Yard to Derby R.T.C.
* a Network Rail Test Train, with class 73, 'Shoeboxes' or 'The Minions', 73951, 'Malcolm Brinded', and 73952, 'Janis Kong', operating the Infra-Structure Monitoring, Mentor, Test Train on the 3Q88, Doncaster West Yard via the S.Y.J.R. to Worksop, back to Doncaster, then Mexborough, Thrybergh, Tinsley, Woodburn Junction for 07:32 then up to Deepcar on the Stocksbridge Branch and back for 09:09 and then on through Woodhouse & Beighton Junction to Chesterfield on the 'Old Road' and finally to Derby R.T.C. In the yellow consist was a blue, 'Ex-Caledonian Sleeper Coach', amongst a set of yellow liveried coaches, one of which was the UTU-4, the Ultra Sonic Test Unit #4, with 'Improving Your Railway' on the side.

Today it is heading another set of empties, this time a set of old HTA Bogie Coal Hoppers, now being used for mineral work to and from Peak Forest, this one with around 18 empties, to be taken to the Cemex Works close to Peak Forest signal box. 66761, was named 'Wensleydale Railway Association 25 Years 1990-2015' at a ceremony in Leeming Bar, near RAF Leeming close to the A1, north of here between Catterick and Boroughbridge in July 2015.

Passing over the level crossing, just south of the old Beighton Station site, one of the many East Midlands diversions on this day, this one appears to have had a problem at St. Pancras-'This service was cancelled between St Pancras International and Leicester due to a problem at the depot (MU).'.. so the origin was changed to Leicester where, presumably, a 'spare set' was available! This one is 1F24 therefore the Leicester to Sheffield service with two sets of class 222, 'Meridian' units, coupled together, today being one of the few relatively busy days for the Beighton signaller. Beighton Station box appears to have out-lived its closure date, indicated in the 'Resignalling Britain' book as happening in 2015, 4 years ago, around the time of the many closures on the Barnetby/Wrawby Junction line, the latter happening at the end of 2015. So who knows what may happen to this box and the one at Woodhouse Junction, which was due to go in 2016.

'BonsoirBaz', has swilled around again, catching the set passing the old station 'box, the station being situated to the north and subject to flooding in the early days before the whole alignment through the station was raised to prevent the the engine and stock being flooded from the River Rother, just a short distance away in the trees to the right of the 'Box, see-

With the passage of the Test Train set here, 'Baz' was prep'ing for a quick shift of locale, as was I, though in my case a rather difficult manoeuvre to get to the Tinsley area in only ... 20 minutes, something which almost failed, but didn't quite! In this final shot at this locale, the GBRf hauled Test Train set 'MENTOR' is being top-and-tailed by 73952, ex-3572 and here, 73951, ex-E3581, 'Malcolm Brinded'. No time to waste....

Bringing up the rear in this shot at Tinsley East are coaches 96608, the Network Rail, Brake Force Runner and followed by 6397 GSA, ex-81600/92190, the blue barrier coach, and finally the rear motive power, 'Minion #2', 73951, 'Janis Kong', the name arising from-

Today the set is operating on the 3Q60, Derby RTC via all over S.Yorks etc and back to Derby RTC this evening with several reversals during the day including 2 in the local area later on tonight, arriving beck in Derby at 21:21.

And, having had a walk around the area yet again and welcomed fellow Flickr photographer, Gavin.B, 'on-site', we stood around chatting about the days events and other rail related matters with the Test Train set now having departed the Brightside Up/Down East Slow siding line, having now settled down in the Brightside loop for the last of the pauses before coming up here. Around 20 minutes later, having watched passage of the 1 or 2 other passenger stock moves, the yellow set appeared in the distance moving slowly through the mist and in the left picture here, can be seen coming under the distant footbridge, with dog and dog-walked in attendance, both apparently taking interest in the passage of the unusual sight up on the bank. With the ISO of the camera set to 1600, the pictures are a little noisy with 73951 once more leading the way north from the Brightside loop, having run to time, so its 16:30 as it passes the old Butterthwaite bridge on Midland metals, there being nothing left of the other route save the track-bed and with the dog-walker following the action along the rack but with the dog now distracted by 'something in the grass' .. 73951 is leading the Test Train 'MENTOR' with 'Malcolm Brinded', 73952 at the rear and a set of 5 coaches including the blue barrier wagon next to the rear 73. WOnder when that cross-over was last used...

The run of a Network Rail Test Train, operated by GBRf, around the south and west Yorks rails from Derby, 19 late at 13:22, via a handful of locales in the area and back to Derby RTC for 21:21.
GBRf, class 73 hauled, 'The Minions', 73951 'Malcolm Brinded' and at the other end, 73952, 'Janis Kong'. This is the canary yellow Infra-Structure Monitoring, Mentor Test Train, operating on the 3Q60, Derby RTC via all over S.Yorks to Derby RTC, with Coaches- 6397 GSA blue barrier coach, 96608, 6262, 999606, UTU-4, Ultra Sonic Test Unit #4 and stating on the side, 'Improving Your Railway', and finally an ex-D.B.S.O., Driving Break Second Open, 9702..
The view looking south to Beighton Junction, taken just before the last shot, sees Test Train set 3Q60, approaching with 73952 leading the 5-coach set mentioned earlier and preparing for the rest of its 8-hour jaunt around the network, Derby R.T.C. and back to Derby R.T.C. later that evening. The North Midland's 'Old Road', now chiefly a freight line, is converging with this one in the background, the line just a short way off in the trees on the left. Early Morning, for me at any rate, but this was something not to miss, at Woodburn Junction for the prospect of two, canary yellow liveried Network Rail Test Trains, first the 'Track Recording Unit and followed around 20 mins later, by 'The Minions'; both sets from the same origin, Doncaster West Yard, and destination, Derby R.T.C., though the latter having an 8 hour jaunt, 'around the world', whilst the former was out for 5 hours on a more direct route.
The two test train workings seen in the pictures are-
* a Network Rail Test Train, with class 950, 950001 and coach 999601, the 'Track Recording Unit' on the 2Q08, Doncaster West Yard to Derby R.T.C.
* a Network Rail Test Train, with class 73, 'Shoeboxes' or 'The Minions', 73951, 'Malcolm Brinded', and 73952, 'Janis Kong', operating the Infra-Structure Monitoring, Mentor, Test Train on the 3Q88, Doncaster West Yard via the S.Y.J.R. to Worksop, back to Doncaster, then Mexborough, Thrybergh, Tinsley, Woodburn Junction for 07:32 then up to Deepcar on the Stocksbridge Branch and back for 09:09 and then on through Woodhouse & Beighton Junction to Chesterfield on the 'Old Road' and finally to Derby R.T.C.
