Ever seen the job title of "Grip" on movie credits? I have no idea what a Grip would do but coming across this fashion shoot in the Cheltenham Badlands a couple of years ago, I imagined the young lady on the right might have fit that description - she seemed to be there solely to look after the model and her accouterments.

Message on card (no postmark) dates to the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic ("the grip"):

Dear Mrs. Rennick

Do you remember me? I am the one you promised (the morning of your operation) the red trimming off your night gown. You remember Miss Johnson said she would not give me a gown that day and so you said I could have the trimming from yours you said the trimming didn’t go down very far in the front but it was as long as the hospital gowns ha ha. Well, how are you? Much better, I hope. I don’t forget you in my prayers, also Mrs. Herrick, poor soul she has suffered so much. My sister is very sick with the Grip may have to be taken to the hospital. No one here to give her proper care. I am feeling pretty good today but still have pain. Everything seems up against us this winter. Johnnie and I have had our share and the rest have had the grip. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

PERHAPS the ‘grip of winter’ is loosening. For the next few days, here at least: no significant snowfall forecast, mostly cloud cover, daytime temperatures reaching +5C, and already some visible signs of thaw.
