(Practice, practice, practice.)
My Mom is a church organist and a piano hobbyist. Her sister has an incredible natural ear and has put her piano playing skills to use most recently as the two of them have hit the nursing-home performance circuit. (Seriously! They're a big hit!)
My great-grandparents were Vaudeville performers, travelling though the midwest tent shows in the days of radio and live performance. PG, my Great-Grandma was an AMAZING pianist in the Ragtime/stride style. I was fortunate enough to know her and be so influenced by her playing and love of the American Songbook (Porter, Gershwin, Carmichael, etc.). We had a very special bond.
My great-grandaunt Bernie, who passed away not that long ago (after finally turing 100), was another incredible pianist, and could tell you stories about dining with Duke Ellington and the like. Although I never met her mother, my (great-great) Grandmother Mayne, I know that she was a conservatory-trained classical pianist who instilled the love of music in her children.
I'm a solid if not virtuosic player. I teach lessons to young kids and love to play. (I also had a major crush on my college piano teacher, which is another topic unto itself...)
My husband took lessons for years as a child and still plays now and then. His mother is another gifted piano player who continues to play on a regular basis.
Emma can't pass by the piano without playing a few notes, and sometimes I wonder if this is indeed something "in our blood".
There are worse afflictions to inherit ;-)
Unfortunately, this princess couldn't get her new tiara to stay on her head. Still, you get the idea...
my parents have a beautiful old farmhouse with lots of land, two cozy fireplaces, a beautiful playroom filled with toys, and more places to explore than our too-brief trips ever allow. it's not the house i grew up in - my parents upgraded the homestead just as their kids moved out - but it's filled with pure magic and memories to me.
They make one called Thanksgiving Day and it is truly unsettling how much it actually does smell like Thanksgiving Day.

Amber having a good hair day
This was our first shoot relocation of the day. At the first location we got soaked - my 580ex flash got flooded and the girls (luckily) did not get out of the car while myself & Geoff staggered in a downpour - the pan lever on my camera also got flooded and didn't work for the rest of the day.
If you like photos like these then read about this location here:
www.thedaily.com.au/news/2009/feb/02/amateur-photographer...
This location is called "Loo With A View"in Mooloolaba - it's a nice toilet with a roof on the beach. This stopover was just before our second attempt at the beach (where we got flooded out again and the beauty dish attachment failed).
Later we went to a sandy beach and stayed relatively dry until I lay in the surf and flooded my phone. Surprisingly at the end of the day after drying everything, nothing is permanently damaged.
Strobist: A small home made beauty dish with a 580ex inside held on a stick by an assistant. Ambient 2 stops down.
A bit blurry but considering it was a hand held, action shot, with no flash, it's not that bad (if I may say so myself!)
;-)
Today was a special day for Pippy! She was kitten of the day at TheDaily Kitten. Thanks!

Such is my plight. Every morning at like 4AM it's a ritual I wake up and play the spelling bee game and listen to The Daily. This quells the restlessness for the most part and I return to sleep from 5–6.
In today's case there is no going back to sleep. I am very excited to start work on a trailer for the Danish feature Smagen af sult. It's a total immersive viewing experience. From the screenplay to the acting to the color grading–Christoffer just nailed it. This film is about a man and a woman in love, and the popular restaurant that is their life’s work. Will they earn the Michelin star?

Part 1 (was cut before final publication)
> Is it a case of resentment from a defeated rival or an example of a company benefiting from government ties? "It may be some of both. The City Council should take this seriously," said Steven Vance, a Chicago based transportation planner. Vance, who formerly advised the city of Chicago on bicycle parking, now works as a planner with Active Transportation Alliance, consulting for suburban schools and municipalities. But he said the existing Bike Chicago plan didn’t work out very well because it was beset by limited capacity and relatively high usage fees.
> City officials declined comment. Alta didn't respond to a series of requests for comment. Neither did B-cycle or Bike Chicago.
Part 2 - in the article above
> However, Chicago transportation planner Steven Vance said the issue of bike sharing in Chicago and beyond is bigger than the local controversy.
It's funny how 10 minute phone conversations with substantial commentary and information transmitted to the interviewer turns into one sentence that says almost nothing. I've probably done the same.

[If you're visiting from buzzfeed, or from some other websites currently misrepresenting the point of this photo, please see the second update at the end of the description, and the most recent comments. Thanks!]
Please allow me to rant for a moment.
Some time ago, COSTCO switched to a new and "improved" packaging method for selling milk. A sticker on the milk jugs explains to us the wonders of the new system, and a big sign in-store provides additional detail...
• Easy to Pour - New shape makes it simple to pour, just tilt.
The in-store sign promises "no more spills". Interestingly, with the new jugs, every time we pour there is a spill, which rarely happened (at least to me) with the old ones.
• Easy to Store - New shape fits better in your refrigerator.
Our refrigerator must be a mutant. The old shape used to fit better.
• Stays Fresher Longer - New foil inner seal locks in freshness. Remove inner seal from under the cap before pouring!
Well, duh. Try pouring without removing the inner seal first.
• Recyclable Jug
...as was the old one.
Not written on the sticker, but expounded on the in-store sign, they also laud the new system as being more environmentally conscious: instead of the old cardboard box, the two jugs now come packaged in plastic. Less trash, they claim! The small detail they fail to mention is that the cardboard was recyclable while the plastic wrap is garbage.
Should I mention the ease of carrying? The cardboard box had good handles, the plastic wrapping offers no means for grasping the jugs, which can cause them to fall (it happened to me once, and I'm not particularly clumsy).
What I can't figure out is why they need to sell two gallons at a time. Why not sell single gallons, doing entirely without the need for extra packaging?
I wrote them a feedback card detailing all this. So much for that.
Update: Not surprisingly, I'm not the only one that found issues with the new packaging method...
Update 2, June 30th, 2008: So I see that this image has been linked to from buzzfeed, under the title "I Hate This New Milk Jug!", which I never wrote. To the new visitors: Contrary to the summary on buzzfeed, which states among other things that the new packaging "creates less waste", the main point I'm making here is that it actually creates MORE waste, since the new packaging cannot be recycled. Less carbon emissions from transportation is great, but the bogus statements about less waste are not.
Ok, so I've been reading up some more about this new jug design, and I understand better the various benefits it can bring, after one learns to pour milk from it with minimal spills, and after modifying the refrigerator so it actually fits in.
The problem, then, is with COSTCO adding the plastic wrap to sell two gallons at a time. Instead of the recyclable cardboard box with the convenient handle, now we have extra plastic that (at least here) we can't recycle, and the plastic wrap blocks the jug's handles. All in all, we have pretty much adapted to the new format, and it's just the routine trashing of the needless plastic wrap that keeps rubbing it in.
