There's something very strange and odd
About the habits of the Cod.
For when you're swimming in the sea,
He sometimes bites you on the knee.
And though his bites are not past healing,
It is a most unpleasant feeling.
And when you're diving down below,
He often nips you on the toe.
And though he doesn't hurt you much,
He has a disagreeable touch.
There's one thing to be said for him, -
It is a treat to see him swim.
But though he swims in graceful curves,
He rather gets upon your nerves.
A "must" for me whenever I visit Osmotherley is to see how Thompson's shop (Est. 1786) is getting on. Sadly, the answer seems to be that nothing much appears to be happening. 6 years ago a notice in the window said that renovations were about to take place.......

The car park at Sheepwash. Extraordinarily, for a dull, cold, January day there were quite a number of cars in the park. Presumably most of the occupants would be walking round the reservoir. The space in the foreground is reserved for the Ice Cream Van!
Near the War Memorial in Osmotherley is a doorway leading to the Methodist Chapel. This doorway is also the start of the section of the Cleveland Way footpath between Osmotherley and Helmsley.
A view from the track heading down from Scarth Moor. The hill of Black Hambleton is on the right. Square Corner, which we had walked to from Oakdale, is under the Black Hambleton.
Heading up from Sheepwash to Scarth Moor you have a good view towards Whorlton Hill, with Roseberry Topping just seen to the left of the hill. On the right is Carlton Bank.
On the track down from Scarth Moor, I was amused by the sheep in this field. Three of the ewes, all facing the same way, were eating something from the red boxes. Taking their turn in the flock for a diet supplement?

A view of Jenny Brewster's Gill that flows into the Oakdale Rservoir. A lot of work has been carried out on the reservoir, making it much smaller than it used to be. The notice saying "No Water Sports" seemed to be a bit redundant.
Jonathan Paul Clegg est né le 7 juin 1953 à Bacup (Royaume-Uni) et mort le 16 juillet 2019 à 66 ans des suites d'un cancer. Il disait:
Je suis en sursis avant le grand plongeon…

Where we eventually settled to eat our picnic lunch! This tree had been snapped at its base (by high wind?) and made a very convenient resting spot.
The Oak Dale Reservoir is now at a considerably lower level than previously. The original level can be seen by the "high tide mark" under the trees.

The path up from Oakdale to Square Corner. Although the ascent is something over 300 ft, this was a considerably easier option than last week's ascent out of Flassendale. At least there are stone flags on this particular pathway.

Roadworks in the centre of Osmotherley, - meaning that there is no parking (where we would normally have parked).
