The Lowry, Salford Quays
I can’t believe I’ve not visited the Quays once this year. Even this offering is from way back in February 2019.
I miss the place…
The Lowry, Salford Quays
Storm Ciara has done her best to batter the UK this weekend. Howling winds and heavy rain and constant showers has meant a morning doing those little DIY jobs you tend to put off until bad weather... a case of nowhere to run! Anyway, all is done now and so an afternoon catching up on photography and processing a few oldies from my cobweb covered archives.
This was taken way back last Feb when Muddy Boots UK suggested a sunrise shoot at the Quays... well, I've not been there too many times and thought why not!
It was quite misty that morning as I recall and eerie just walking about the complex without another soul insight. I made a right mess, compositionally wise, of the best of the mist and no amount of cropping and scene shifting has made then worth posting, except this one. Still one out of a trip is better than nothing in my book.
Salford Quays
It's been a long time since I posted an illuminated architectural shot from the Quays, in fact, not since I met up with fellow Flickrites - Mark & Gary Waidson and Geoff Moore way back in March of this year for an early morning shoot.
This was taken during my second visit to the Lightwaves illuminations. I'm actually stood next to two giant spacemen, four daleks and the TARDIS, but the Lowry proved to be far more colourful and interesting to photograph. I've never taken a shot from this side (MediaCity square), nor seen the theatre in these colours before. The construction work on the left side is going to be a new cocktail bar and restaurant under "The Alchemist" brand and is to be called "The Bund". It will also block the view of the Detroit bridge in Dock 9 but may have some interesting illuminations all of its own... I'll be back to check!
Quite pleased with this seeing as my tripod is just a ball head and has no panoramic function. 9 shots taken in horizontal format and stitched together in PS.
A 180° view taking in Detroit Bridge, The Alchemist, Nandos, The Lowry Shopping Centre, The Lowry Theatre, The Imperial War Museum and ITV Studios.

A Friday evening visit to the Quays to see Lightwaves 2017 with fellow Flickrites - Eddie Coulson and Mark Dixon turned out to be a bit of an anticlimax as this year's installations proved to be a bit of a letdown. However, the Quays at night never fails to deliver its own spectacle, but an hour in the freezing wind blowing up the basin had us packing up and heading for somewhere to eat.
I hadn't really looked at the images in detail until today, and besides it's been a long time since I posted a night time shot... in fact it's been that long they've built the new Alchemist bar and restaurant. That funny shape to the left of the Lowry Theatre that now blocks the Detroit Bridge.

A cocktail bar and restaurant right in the heart of MediaCity UK situated on the approach road – The Quays. It straddles the North Bay and Huron/Erie Basins. At times I felt they had the better deal being on the inside while we three were on the outside in the drizzle and rain.
Still, I bet none of them have images that we captured that night… togs 1:0 diners
Inspired by Narcissus’ story, but first let’s pretend that it’s a lake and she is by the banks (or not). But mostly this is "patterned" on the other ending of that story.
“…when Narcissus died, the goddesses of the forest appeared and found the lake, which had been fresh water, transformed into a lake of salty tears.
“Why do you weep?” the goddesses asked.
“I weep for Narcissus,” the lake replied.
“Ah, it is no surprise that you weep for Narcissus,” they said, “for though we always pursued him in the forest, you alone could contemplate his beauty close at hand.”
“But…was Narcissus beautiful? The lake asked.
“Who better than you know that?” the goddesses said in wonder. “After all, it was by your banks that he knelt each day to contemplate himself!”
The lake was silent for some time. Finally it said:
“I weep for Narcissus, but I never noticed that Narcissus was beautiful. I weep because, each time he knelt beside my banks, I could see, in the depths of his eyes, my own beauty reflected.”
-From The Alchemist (Paulo Coelho)

I've been living in Nottingham for over 45 years, and now is the first time I've noticed how symmetrical this building is, viewed from where I was standing.

North Bay, Salford Quays
A double trip down to the Quays last week with Muddy Boots UK. The first on Sunday morning to catch the sunrise, which started with a mist that engulfed the Lowry theatre. As Muddy hadn't been before we did the grand tour of the key locations and eventually caught the sunrise over the direction of Ordsall, which I haven't taken a single shot of before. It was only on the way back to the car that we stopped to capture the NV buildings in perfect reflections. "I bet this looks good at night!" said Muddy.
So Wednesday night saw us head back there for Muddy's 2nd and my 45th visit! I personally haven't had to many evening shoots here where the water was so calm so we made the best of the conditions. This is The Alchemist bar and restaurant that overlooks the North Bay.

Just after the lights came and before the rain came down and the darkness set-in.

Wednesday night was a glorious sunset with under lit orange and pink clouds against a pale blue sky from the setting sun nicely aligned along the Ship Canal... this was Thursday night!
A very late dash to the Quays for what promised to be a similar sunset only for the sun to disappear behind a blanket of cloud on the horizon well before sunset - you can see it sniggering just behind the MediaCity bridge. Not wanting to waste the opportunity, besides nothing decent on the box, a few new angles I haven't captured. This is the newly opened, I say new... it been open since Sept 2017, but this is my first night shot of the place.

The right way up looking towards the Alchemist and Lowry theatre. I much prefer the other viewpoint as you can get closer to some of the quotations as the '9' is embossed with anecdotes and witticisms from people who use to work in Salford Docks long before it became the media centre of the north.
The first one reads...
"Despite the 'dot' it's still going to look like a 6 when looking from the other way and from the side it might look like an apostrophe, or a comma from the other side, or a musical note to someone who's just had a drink"... Ray Hanks
Incidentally, the sculpture, is called “Nine Dock” and was installed in 2010. The dot is just out of picture towards the bottom-right.
This iconic building, one of Nottinghams finest architectural structure was opened in the 1880’s for the Prudential Assurance Limited.
It was designed by Alfred Waterhouse, a renowned architect of that era who also designed the British Museum in London. Although Waterhouse was renowned for his Gothic style, the style used in architecting this building is Flemish Renaissance. He used red brick, in contrast to the stone of his museum design but I have shown this in monochrome which works well, I think.
The build was quite a difficult one as it is on a downwards slope and also triangular in shape!
Since it ceased to be used by Prudential it has had several owners with the latest being the upmarket Alchemist Cocktail Bar chain who have at least eight other bars across the country.
Outside The Alchemist, a cocktail bar, in Cardiff's Mary Street. The bar has now permanently closed. December 2023.
The Alchemist is a fable about a young shepherd in his journey to the pyramids of Egypt, after having a recurring dream of finding a treasure there.
Brazilian author Paulo Coelho wrote it in two weeks in 1987.

We left early for Tarbela Dam. The sun was shining on our way to the Dam, but on our way back home, it started to rain. Gusts of wind were blowing as we got out of the car. We all enjoyed a lot. I hope you all had a great weekend..

Happy Tuesday!*
*Tuesday is my favorite day of the week to spell. It looks so foreign and proper. =)
What are you reading now?
An eBook or paper book?
Just repost of a reading candid in 2012.
Have a great day!
It is always a nice thing to have summer read either in the shade or under the sun.
What are you reading this summer?
I just picked up the short fable story “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho and may be going to “The Path to the Nest of Spiders” by Italo Calvino after that.
Stories are good. They bring you to another world without physically traveling.
The reading candid shot was taken at Britannia Shipyard in the weekend.
Happy Tuesday!
We know that we are proving ourselves worthy of the miracle of life.

Day 38
Just got done rereading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Its such a beautiful, lovely book. I've always read it at some sort of fork in the road during life and I've always taken away from the story to follow my heart. To listen and hear what I really want. You can't be steered wrong if you listen to your heart.
