English Counties

This is another collection of images which have been photographed over a long period of time. These are photographs taken mostly on holidays throughout our great English Counties. In the day we have travelled the length and breadth of Great Britain, with many coastal and country walks and a lot of photography.

This selection has been chosen from the many Northampton photographs I have taken. Northamptonshire is a wonderful county to visit.

You have never stood this close, to where you want to be

You have always waded in the shallows

Between me and the deep blue sea

You'd never want me to appear

You'd never want it to be over

You never wanted to reach out to the edge of time

While you sleep in earthly delight

Someone's flesh is rotting tonight

Like no other to you

What you've done

You cannot undo

I have always kept you closer than you've known

I, I am riding in the shadows behind you

On a pale white horse

This is the Guild Hall in Derby, taken in the evening. It is also known locally as the 'market place' and was built in 1828.

I hope to return soon and get a few more shots in different light and from different angles. This particular image is actually 3 shots taken in 'landscape orientation', starting from the ground and finishing with the sky, then magically sewn together in Lr and corrected for converging lines in Ps. The film simulation is Acros with a red filter.

Darling, darling, darling, darling

I shot myself in the foot again

Drumming, drumming, drumming, drumming

Rrrpa, fell through the roof again

What a day, what a day

I'm bothered by my illusions of nightmares of werewolves

What a day, what a day

I'm cornered by your delusion that I might be an angel

Where are your wings? Where are the wings?

................................................................................................On June 17, 2012, in the 2nd week of Pentecost, All Saints who have shone forth in the land of Russia, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia performed the rite of the great consecration of the cathedral church of the Holy Prince Igor of Chernigov in Peredelkin near Moscow and the first Divine Liturgy in the newly consecrated church.

St. Petersburg craftsmen from the Guild of Masters borrowed the idea to create a church with bright domes of unusual shape and texture from the Moscow St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square. The authors of the current project of porcelain domes have been struggling for more than six months over a seemingly unsolvable task - how to create unusual festive church tops that would not only be unlike others, but also be durable.

The main dome of the temple is about the height of a three-story house and almost ten meters in diameter. Its main color is bright blue. However, the range will not be monotonous - other colors are provided."The dome consists of 24 rounded lobules of cobalt color, and each of them is divided among themselves by porcelain rollers, which are covered with special ceramic gold. This is a 12% solution of gold in vegetable oils. It is applied like paint with a brush, and then it is burned to 850 degrees. After that, the gold seems to stick to the porcelain surface and becomes unaffected by any weather influences."

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (Italian pronunciation: [katteˈdraːle di ˈsanta maˈriːa del ˈfjoːre]; in English "Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flowers") is the main church of Florence, Italy. Il Duomo di Firenze, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style with the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. The exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th-century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris.

The cathedral complex, located in Piazza del Duomo, includes the Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile. These three buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the historic centre of Florence and are a major attraction to tourists visiting Tuscany. The basilica is one of Italy's largest churches, and until development of new structural materials in the modern era, the dome was the largest in the world. It remains the largest brick dome ever constructed.

The cathedral is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Florence, whose archbishop is currently Giuseppe Betori.

Santa Maria del Fiore was built on the site of an earlier cathedral dedicated to Saint Reparata. The ancient structure, founded in the early 5th century and having undergone many repairs, was crumbling with age, according to the 14th-century Nuova Cronica of Giovanni Villani, and was no longer large enough to serve the growing population of the city. Other major Tuscan cities had undertaken ambitious reconstructions of their cathedrals during the Late Medieval period, such as Pisa and particularly Siena where the enormous proposed extensions were never completed.

Giotto's bell tower (campanile)

The new church was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio and approved by city council in 1294. Di Cambio was also architect of the church of Santa Croce and the Palazzo Vecchio. He designed three wide naves ending under the octagonal dome, with the middle nave covering the area of Santa Reparata. The first stone was laid on September 9, 1296, by Cardinal Valeriana, the first papal legate ever sent to Florence. The building of this vast project was to last 140 years; Arnolfo's plan for the eastern end, although maintained in concept, was greatly expanded in size.

After Arnolfo died in 1310, work on the cathedral slowed for thirty years. When the relics of Saint Zenobius were discovered in 1330 in Santa Reparata, the project gained a new impetus. In 1331, the Arte della Lana, the guild of wool merchants, took over patronage for the construction of the cathedral and in 1334 appointed Giotto to oversee the work. Assisted by Andrea Pisano, Giotto continued di Cambio's design. His major accomplishment was the building of the campanile. When Giotto died in 1337, Andrea Pisano continued the building until work was halted due to the Black Death in 1348.

In 1349, work resumed on the cathedral under a series of architects, starting with Francesco Talenti, who finished the campanile and enlarged the overall project to include the apse and the side chapels. In 1359, Talenti was succeeded by Giovanni di Lapo Ghini (1360–1369) who divided the center nave in four square bays. Other architects were Alberto Arnoldi, Giovanni d'Ambrogio, Neri di Fioravante and Andrea Orcagna. By 1375, the old church Santa Reparata was pulled down. The nave was finished by 1380, and by 1418, only the dome remained incomplete.

On 18 August 1418, the Arte della Lana announced an architectural design competition for erecting Neri's dome. The two main competitors were two master goldsmiths, Lorenzo Ghiberti and Filippo Brunelleschi, the latter of whom was supported by Cosimo de Medici. Ghiberti had been the winner of a competition for a pair of bronze doors for the Baptistery in 1401 and lifelong competition between the two remained sharp. Brunelleschi won and received the commission.

Ghiberti, appointed coadjutator, drew a salary equal to Brunelleschi's and, though neither was awarded the announced prize of 200 florins, was promised equal credit, although he spent most of his time on other projects. When Brunelleschi became ill, or feigned illness, the project was briefly in the hands of Ghiberti. But Ghiberti soon had to admit that the whole project was beyond him. In 1423, Brunelleschi was back in charge and took over sole responsibility.

Work started on the dome in 1420 and was completed in 1436. The cathedral was consecrated by Pope Eugene IV on March 25, 1436, (the first day of the year according to the Florentine calendar). It was the first 'octagonal' dome in history to be built without a temporary wooden supporting frame. It was one of the most impressive projects of the Renaissance. During the consecration in 1436, Guillaume Dufay's motet Nuper rosarum flores was performed. The structure of this motet was strongly influenced by the structure of the dome.

The decoration of the exterior of the cathedral, begun in the 14th century, was not completed until 1887, when the polychrome marble façade was completed with the design of Emilio De Fabris. The floor of the church was relaid in marble tiles in the 16th century.

The exterior walls are faced in alternate vertical and horizontal bands of polychrome marble from Carrara (white), Prato (green), Siena (red), Lavenza and a few other places. These marble bands had to repeat the already existing bands on the walls of the earlier adjacent baptistery the Battistero di San Giovanni and Giotto's Bell Tower. There are two side doors: the Doors of the Canonici (south side) and the Door of the Mandorla (north side) with sculptures by Nanni di Banco, Donatello, and Jacopo della Quercia. The six side windows, notable for their delicate tracery and ornaments, are separated by pilasters. Only the four windows closest to the transept admit light; the other two are merely ornamental. The clerestory windows are round, a common feature in Italian Gothic.

During its long history, this cathedral has been the seat of the Council of Florence (1439), heard the preachings of Girolamo Savonarola and witnessed the murder of Giuliano di Piero de' Medici on Sunday, 26 April 1478 (with Lorenzo Il Magnifico barely escaping death), in the Pazzi conspiracy.

Florence (/ˈflɒrəns/ FLOR-əns; Italian: Firenze [fiˈrɛntse] ( listen)) is the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany and of the Metropolitan City of Florence. It is the most populous city in Tuscany, with approximately 382,000 inhabitants, expanding to over 1,520,000 in the metropolitan area.

Florence was a centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the time, is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance, and has been called "the Athens of the Middle Ages". A turbulent political history includes periods of rule by the powerful Medici family, and numerous religious and republican revolutions. From 1865 to 1871 the city was the capital of the recently established Kingdom of Italy.

The Historic Centre of Florence attracts 13 millions of tourists each year, and Euromonitor International ranked the city as the world's 89th most visited in 2012, with 1.8 million visitors. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982. The city is noted for its culture, Renaissance art and architecture and monuments. The city also contains numerous museums and art galleries, such as the Uffizi Gallery and the Palazzo Pitti, and still exerts an influence in the fields of art, culture and politics. Due to Florence's artistic and architectural heritage, it has been ranked by Forbes as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Florence is an important city in Italian fashion, being ranked in the top 51 fashion capitals of the world; furthermore, it is a major national economic centre, as well as a tourist and industrial hub. In 2008, the city had the 17th highest average income in Italy.

Guild Church of St Mary Aldermary

Situated at 69 Watling St, London, EC4N 4SJ.

There has been a church on this for about 900 years. The patronage belonged to the Prior and Chapter of Canterbury and was later transferred to the Archbishop in 1400.

Sir Henry Keeble paid for the building of a new church in 1510, but he died in 1518 leaving the tower still to be finished. It wasn’t until 1629 where two legacies enabled the church to be completed by 1632.

Poor Henry Keeble what was supposed to be his resting place, his dream was short-lived. His mortal remains were removed to be replaced by those of Two Lord Mayors, Sir William Laxton and Sir Thomas Lodge. To add insult to injury, his monument was also destroyed.

The church was badly damaged by the Great Fire of London in 1666, the tower and parts of its walls survived. A gentleman called Henry Rogers had left a legacy of £5,000 of which his widow had stipulated that the church should be rebuilt as a replica of the old one.

Sir Christopher Wren did the majority of the rebuilding in the ‘Gothic’ style. Pevsner writes ‘It is the chief surviving monument of 17th century Gothic revival in the City’.

Another church that was destroyed in the Great Fire ‘St Thomas the Apostle’ was now united with St Mary’s. St Thomas’s was not rebuilt.

A new organ was installed, built by George England and Hugh Russell in 1781. There were major restorations between 1876-77. A new Oak Screen was added, pews and stalls were replaced. The organ was moved from the Western Gallery to the Chancel, new glass to windows and a new Reredos installed.

The church was damaged in the Second World War but the damage was minor when set against the destruction to other churches in the vicinity.

The church was designated a Grade 1 listed building in 1950

April 2005 was the last major restorations, particular attention to plaster ceilings, memorials on the North Wall.

There are many famous people buried here but many are forgotten to us. Past Lord Mayors, Military figures and members of the Clergy glorified at the time but now not remembered in the mists of time. I found one reference to Richard Chaucer, a vintner, said to be the father of Geoffrey Chaucer of Canterbury Tales fame.

Since 2007 St Mary’s has been the Regimental Church of the Royal Tank Regiment. Also if you look at the many stained glass windows you will see many emblems of the London Guilds (Trades).

Definition of guild church. : an English metropolitan church that has been freed from parish responsibilities in order to minister full time to nonresident city workers during their hours in the city. This provided by Merriam-Webster.

Definition of guild church. : an English metropolitan church that has been freed from parish responsibilities in order to minister full time to nonresident city workers during their hours in the city. This provided by Merriam-Webster.

Home to "The Guildable Manor" The Manor is the original ‘Town of Southwark’ referred to in Domesday Book and the Charter of 1327. Archaeological evidence suggests that it was the Anglo-Saxon bridge-head settlement and also the Roman equivalent for Londinium. ‘Guildable’ seems to refer to the manor’s role as a tax and toll point for the King’s interests and differentiates it from any other transpontine neighbours that may also for convenience have been referred to as ‘Southwark’

Living in the caves guarantees safety from the Guild, however it goes without saying that spending too much time down there can have quite the effect on one's physical and mental health. Thus Charlotte made regular visits to the surface, often times exploring the vast lushlands that bordered her caves. Whenever she came across an interesting or useful location, she'd add it to her map and jot down a quick description of the place in her journal - living near the border of two wildly different biomes supplied her with no shortage of these spots. One such location was an area dense with wooden pillars and odd, floating windows of sorts. Charlotte could not determine neither it's past nor it's purpose, and so had simply christened it the "Lushland oddity."

I'm using the wombo art app way too much 😅

I'm working on a video right now for my YouTube channel and just needed a small break from all the photography and editing. So I made this guy, a small vignette for the Quantum Lands RPG as well as my entry to Space Jam in the 12x12 category. It was definitely inspired by some ai-generated art pieces created with the wombo app. There's nothing too special about this MOC, but I will probably use that column technique again sometime. Let me know what you guys think of it!

Feedback is always appreciated,

Happy Building!

St. Nicholas Church, Roman Catholic church, one of the oldest buildings.

Started in the early 13th century as a replacement for a Romanesque church, continued to be built in the local Scheldt Gothic style until the end of the century. Typical is the use of grey stone + the single large tower above the crossing + the slender turrets at the corners

Built in the old trading center, it was popular with the guilds. The guilds had their own chapels, which were added to the sides in the 14th + 15th centuries.

The central tower served as an observation post.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Nicholas Church (Dutch: Sint-Niklaaskerk) is one of the oldest and most prominent landmarks in Ghent, Belgium. Begun in the early 13th century as a replacement for an earlier Romanesque church, construction continued through the rest of the century in the local Scheldt Gothic style (named after the nearby river). Typical of this style is the use of blue-gray stone from the Tournai area, the single large tower above the crossing, and the slender turrets at the building's corners.

Built in the old trade center of Ghent next to the bustling Korenmarkt (Wheat Market), St. Nicholas Church was popular with the guilds whose members carried out their business nearby. The guilds had their own chapels which were added to the sides of the church in the 14th and 15th centuries.

The central tower, which was funded in part by the city, served as an observation post and carried the town bells until the neighboring belfry of Ghent was built. These two towers, along with the Saint Bavo Cathedral, still define the famous medieval skyline of the city center. One of the treasures of the church is its organ, produced by the famous French organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll.

The organ in the Saint Nicholas Church is one of the most important romantic organs of Belgium. It was built by the noted French organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll.

I’m not 100% certain where this is, apart from being within a block or two of The Guild Church of St. Katherine Cree. I was walking from the church to Liverpool Str. Station when I saw and snapped the scene. I loved the monochromatic effect of the stone used for these buildings. There’s even a modern building in this frame which I think has been quite sensitively designed and fits in well with the surrounding architecture.

Although there is quite a lot of info online about the church, I can’t find anything about St. Katherine Cree herself, so I have no idea how the church came by this dedication.

I must remember to use my phone for pics as well as my camera because it provides location data I often miss when just using my camera.

The Guild Halls

Opposite the city hall, on both sides of the Grote Markt Antwerp, you will see a row of beautiful guildhalls.

These houses were very typical in the 16th and 17th century.

Every house was connected to a certain guild that was built to show off their power, status and wealth.

That’s why you see on top of the guildhalls those amazing golden statues that are related to their specific guild.

The largest guildhall is named the ‘Pand van Spanje’, which means the house of Spain. You will recognize it at the chevalier on its horse that is just ready to kill the dragon that is climbing up. The Horseman is Saint Joris.

Truth to be told, only a few guildhalls are original. House numbers 24, 38 and 40 are authentic. They have been renovated to show their original beauty again.

The other houses are actually replicas from houses that were there before. These were built in the 19th and 20th century and were based on old paintings and testimonies. Some houses were based on houses that used to be elsewhere in the city.

All the guildhalls on the Grote Markt Antwerp are built in a Renaissance style with a few Gothic elements like the pinnacles, that are so typical for Belgium and the Netherlands.

A very similar shot I posted last year, just slightly tighter framed and a few steps to the right allowing a space between the building on the left and the guild tower.

The Lord Leycester Hospital (often known simply as the Lord Leycester) is one of the best preserved examples of medieval courtyard architecture in England and is a charity supporting ex-servicemen. It is located next to the West Gate, on High Street. The Hospital is a prominent and internationally famous feature of Warwick. For almost 900 years buildings have been erected and civic activity has taken place on the site, starting with the chapel built in 1126. The site was donated by the 12th Earl of Warwick in the 14th century to the United Guild of the Holy Trinity and St George. The Guild Hall, Great Hall and Master's House were constructed in the late 15th century. Over the centuries, the ancient buildings and 500 year old gardens have been admired by many famous visitors such as Charles Dickens and Oscar Wilde, by Kings and Queens, such as King George V and the Queen Mother and ordinary travellers from around the world.

Another unused picture from my archives. The building in the centre dates from 1417 and was known as the Guildhall. This was established as a meeting place for the Guild of the Holy Cross, a religious group of merchants in the town. It was adjacent to the 13th century Guild Chapel, which was the merchants' place of worship. Its tower is on the left.

The Guildhall was for centuries at the centre of life in Stratford, being used for assemblies, as a meeting place for the local council, and as a school building for the King Edward VI School. The upper part (known as Above Hall) was used as a schoolroom from around 1560. Most famously, William Shakespeare almost certainly attended school here as a young child in the early 1570s.

Ever since Jonas Wide's Fighting Pit of Mophet I've wanted to visit the concept myself, and the Guilds of Historica Ancient Wonders category sent me back to the idea. Plus it coincided with a burst of inspiration triggered by all the epic Summer Joust builds we were treated to a few months back. So I decided to do my best to build The Fighting Pit, not just of some town like Mophet or Kaligem, but THE Fighting Pit of the entire guild. How'd I do? ;)

This build took me four or five weeks and uses hands down the most minifigures I've ever used in a single MOC. Take a look at the time lapse video (do take a look, the first minute is pretty cool...) or all the extra pictures on my blog.

Here is the final installment in my series of prizes for the Guild Evolution category of the 2024 Summer Joust

The settlement’s new dragon comrades gained them quite the reputation in the coming years. Intelligent and loyal, they were well suited to working together with the cartographers, hunters and trackers of the settlement. Together they could defeat even the most bloodthirsty of beasts that sometimes ventured out of Alnya’s deep forest, quickly deliver important messages, or find missing people. Their services were in high demand and earned them many generous rewards. And so an Adventurer’s Guild was formed where their many unique talents could be put to use solving problems others couldn’t. A large fortress was built with harbor, town, and farms springing up around it to house and supply the increasing number of recruits who came from afar to try and prove their mettle and gain admission.
