Rework of an image taken 10 years ago - the original has been deleted.

The county of Shropshire might be several removed from poet William Blake's London birthplace but, when he wrote of England's green and pleasant land in 'Jerusalem', he must surely have had a scene like this in mind.

The location is near Stokesay Castle and, in its early autumn garb, it's hard not to be taken by the landscape generally, nor the form and textures of the majestic ash tree or the already decaying bracken.

The shot here, taken just below the brow of the hill to capture the dainty (and presumably) sheep trods in the grass, features the train as almost a secondary element. It's probably too far away for most folk but, for the record, DB Cargo 'Shed' unit 66020 is making its way up The Marches line towards Craven Arms hauling the Alexandra Dock Junction - Bescot (6M60) china clay tanks.

I've left the image slightly dark to enrich the tones and draw the eye through to the train. Best viewed full-screen, if it's your sort of thing.

Most of my shots are taken in and around the city of Molde. Molde is the second largest city in the county of Møre og Romsdal, lies along the shores of the Romsdalsfjord in Western Norway.

The official, and also most common, nickname for Molde is The City of Roses or Rose City.

As you explore the city, you will see why it was given its nickname. In the city center you will find rose gardens, parks, statues, and murals all paying homage to the iconic flower. Even the town hall roof has a rose garden and is accessible to all! Decorative gardening has been popular in Molde for many generations and adds to the city’s beauty and charm.

"The town's largest collection of roses is to be found at the Town Hall roof, but the magnificent roses in the Alexandra Park is also worth your time.

A rose is a woody perennial flowering plant of the genus Rosa, in the family Rosaceae, or the flower it bears. There are over three hundred species and tens of thousands of cultivars. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing, or trailing, with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. "

The Alexandra Road estate (officially the Alexandra and Ainsworth estate, but often referred to as Rowley Way, the name of its main thoroughfare) is a housing estate in the London Borough of Camden, North London, England. It was designed in a brutalist style in 1968 by Neave Brown of Camden Council's Architects Department. Construction work commenced in 1972 and was completed in 1978. It is constructed from site-cast, board-marked, white, unpainted reinforced concrete. Along with 520 apartments, the site also includes a school, community centre, youth club, heating complex, and parkland.

The Alexandra Bridge, built in 1900, linking Ottawa, Ontario and Hull (Gatineau), Quebec, Canada.

Officially known as the Interprovincial Bridge, it was built by the Dominion Bridge Company Ltd of Lachine, Quebec, which built many bridges in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario.

It was built to service the Pontiac Pacific Junction Railway Company and the Ottawa Gatineau Railway.

It was designed by Guy C. Dunn (engineer).

When it was built in 1882, the Alexandra Bridge was one of the country’s largest, strongest and most beautiful bridges, a feat of engineering. In 2013 the surviving piers, towers and abutments of the bridge are a monument to the skills of its engineer Leslie Duncan Macgeorge. The structures have withstood the power of the Clutha/Mata-au, one of New Zealand’s largest and swiftest rivers, for over 130 years.

The old new Alexandra Bridge. The original was built in 1861 and damaged by high water in 1894. Thirty years later in 1926 as the automobile became popular, the Provincial Government decided to build a new bridge on the same site as the original one. It was closed in 1964 as a new bridge was built 2 kilometres (1.25m) south of here. In 1984 the Alexandra Bridge Provincial Park was established to protect the area's historical values.

The Alexandra Lodge was once a waypoint for those seeking riches in the goldfields of British Columbia. In later years it provided luxurious accommodation along the Trans Canada highway. Many once passed through these walls including paupers and kings. I’ve written a blog post with additional details and photos. The link is in my profile.

Alexandra Bridge was completed in 1863 as part of the world-famous “Cariboo Wagon Road” which connected Fort Yale to the gold fields of Barkerville.

Declared the “eighth wonder of the world” when it was completed in 1865, the wagon road played a key role in the gold rush economy of the 1860’s, and in the development of the new colony of British Columbia.

The Alexandra Bridge you see today was built in 1926, when the Cariboo Wagon Road was upgraded for automobiles. When you visit this historic suspension bridge today, look for the original 1863 stone footings which can clearly be seen supporting the 1926 structure. The 1926 highway and bridge were superseded by the modern highway we travel today (completed in the early 1960’s).

At Alexandra Bridge Provincial Park in the Fraser Canyon, you can see the historic bridge, as well as surviving sections of the Cariboo Wagon Road. Access is easy, with a one-kilometer, gently-graded trail linking the parking lot to the bridge.

The Alexandra Bridge, built in 1900, linking Ottawa, Ontario and Hull (now Gatineau), Quebec, Canada.

The Royal Alexandra Inter-provincial Bridge is a steel truss cantilever bridge spanning the Ottawa River between Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec. It is known locally as both the "Alexandra Bridge" and the "Inter-provincial Bridge".

The bridge was constructed by the Canadian Pacific Railway between 1898 and 1900. Four barges were built to move steel beams into position. During the winter (1899–1900) workmen toiled day and night chopping channels to keep the ice clear for the barges to pass so that work could continue on the superstructure. Considerable construction delays were caused by the severe winter conditions. By September 1900 the four fixed support spans were complete.

The bridge's main cantilever centre span was, at the time of construction, the longest in Canada and the fourth longest in the world. Both records are now held by the Quebec Bridge. The centre span was successfully put in place on October 7, and a locomotive made a trial run on December 12, 1900. On February 18, 1901 the bridge was officially inaugurated as the Inter-provincial Bridge as it had been built by the Ottawa Inter-provincial Bridge Company. The name was changed in September 1901 to the "Royal Alexandra Bridge" in honour of the new Queen during the visit of her son, the Duke of Cornwall and York, later George V.

Shortly after Citroën took a controlling interest in Maserati in 1968, the concept of a mid-engined two-seat sports car was proposed. The Maserati project got underway in October 1968 and a prototype was on the road by mid-1969. Shown in its final form at the Geneva Salon in March 1971. Compared to other supercars it was civilized and practical, featuring a hydraulically powered pedal cluster that could be moved forward and backwards at the touch of a button and a steering wheel that could be tilted and telescoped, to allow for easier access, and a full size boot. the Bora used dual-pane glass separating its cabin from the engine compartment as well as a carpeted aluminum engine cap to muffle the engine noise.

Two engines were offered initially, including a high-revving 4.7-litre (290 cu in) V8 and a higher torque 4.9-litre (300 cu in) V8, eventually production moved entirely to the larger 4.9 litre unit.

A combined steel monocoque chassis and body featured a tubular steel subframe at the back for the engine and transmission. and all round independant suspension

December 2022

A walk from Taffs Well to Pontypridd using the trackbeds of old railways, on 26 November 2020.

This line, whose trackbed is now part of the Taff Trail, was the Pontypridd, Caerphilly & Newport Railway (PC&N) that (nominally) linked the towns of its title from 1884 to 1965. In practice the railway only owned the five miles from Pontypridd to Penrhos Junction and another two miles between Caerphilly and Machen, for the rest using running powers over the lines of other companies.

Of further relevance is that it was in reality controlled by the Alexandra Dock & Railway Company (ADR), who wanted to be able to tap into the coalfields of the Taff Valley and divert Cardiff bound coal to their own docks in Newport. This was a quite reasonable aspiration as at that time it was commonplace for ships to have to stand for days off Cardiff waiting access to the docks there, whilst coal stood for days waiting to be loaded.

A passenger service was started on 28 December 1887 and the three or four trains ran non-stop between Pontypridd and Caerphilly until a number of stopping places were opened in April 1904, most of these being closed between 1930 and the end of all passenger services in 1956.

Until 1903 all trains had been worked by the Taff Vale Railway, but in that year they gave notice to end this and the ADR took over, using locomotives that had recently been displaced by electrification of the Mersey Railway, quite a change of environment.
