I’ve been living in Austin a little over 2 years now, but today was my first time watching bats take off the Congress Avenue bridge. It was simply mesmerizing!! If you’ve seen an image of Austin with bats, this is the reason. :)

A little background on the ATX bat cave & bat colony: After a renovation of the bridge in the 1980s, it became an ideal habitat for bats as a cave. This attracted migrating Mexican free-tailed bats to form a colony and the numbers have grown over the years. From March to October, you can see around 1.5 million bats take off from narrow crevices in the underside of the bridge right after sunset. This is the largest urban bat colony in the world!

I witnessed the creation of this new 100-foot-tall monumental mural sitting in downtown Austin from my office and always wondered what it meant.

This Sandra Chevrier and Shepard Fairey’s mural is a tribute to the 19th Amendment of the US constitution, which gave women the right to vote 100 years ago. This is a symbol of the hardships that women went through for just being born as a woman, and how they fought for their freedom - a token of feminism!

“Hueco Tanks State Park"

El Paso, Texas

During my trip to Texas, my daughter wanted to take me to several places she had been to before and knew I would like. She took us to Hueco Tanks State Park in El Paso to hike the large rock formations there.

Huecos (“whey-coes”) are indentions in the rocks that collect rainwater and have sustained life for humans, wildlife, plants and trees.

The Jornada Mogollon people inhabited the area and left many neat images painted on the rocks. There are an estimated 5000 images painted on the rocks.
