I spent this weekend making my own MP3 player using the Daisy kit from Teuthis and Make magazine. I've had the Texas Instruments Little Professor gathering dust in my room for quite awhile. The Daisy just barely fit (although I couldn't fit the back on). I was able to use three of the original calculator buttons to control play/pause and skip forward/reverse, but I had to find another solution for volume control so I mounted some exterior controls.

This is the first device I learned to program, at age 11, thanks to my Dad. It was an extremely powerful portable computing device for its day and cost $300 in 1977. It could load pre-programmed software from little magnetic strips or 5K ROM cartridges, and could also save custom programs to the mag strips. It had 960 bytes of RAM. An optional $200 printer/base-station and other accessories were also available.
