I’m not particularly interested in being a software salesman but I wanted to pass on my recent positive experience with Topaz DeNoise to you, my Flickr friends. Out of concern for being annoying I’m not going to make a habit of this but frankly I am impressed enough with it I wanted to share. In this case two pictures is worth a thousand words, so here you go: a detail from my recent owl picture before and after processing. Note that it was taken at iso 12800 due to the late hour, and even after substantial processing in Lightroom was still very noisy. The DeNoise software did an amazing job of cleaning it up, suppressing noise and bringing out details. It will produce a corresponding improvement even if the initial image were higher quality. This image was so tricky!! I used theshutterbugeye's stream to inspire me for this one but also put my own personal style into it.
theshutterbugeye has taken some really cool photos of buildings lately, halloween inspired pics and is quite the expert at using textures. So I thought I would use those three elements as my inspiration... buildings, halloween and textures!!
I had taken this photo of a very old building on a university campus at Parramatta, Sydney quite a while ago.
I also had a intricate spider web photo which I also had never used so I used that as my texture.
Hope this has turned out ok, I don't do much texture work!
... with the passage of time, even the mind's eye will eventually need glasses...

Not many of you knew Spinningwatermelon but he was an amazing person I am lucky to have come across. I received a package today letting me know he has passed away, at 28 yrs old. If you knew him, you'll recognize the hat in the picture. The pic is of him and I don't think he'd mind me sharing it...he wanted to be remembered and not forgotten. So I remember him with a smile and not tears but I am finding it hard to find my smile right now. However, I did buy this Eve figure quite awhile ago when he wrote a testimonial to me: "Nicole: Not as cool as EVE, but close. =}" he made me smile and crease my brow often in worry and intrigue so I thought it fitting to put my Eve figure by his pic -it makes me smile, just a little. Also in the package was his drawings and poetry. I took a picture for him in Hawaii...he said to take a pic of the shells for him...this was the pic I took. I thought he'd like the amazing capture and the colors. Also, this song is on my iPod that I listen to and think of him often. You are missed, my friend, my spinningwatermelon.

Pura Tanah Lot (Tanah Lot Temple) is Hindu Temple.
Located about 20 km from Denpasar, the temple sits on a huge offshore rock which has been shaped continuously over the years by the ocean tide.
Tanah Lot means "Land in the Middle of the Sea" (in Balinese language) is a famous rock formation off the Indonesian island of Bali.
Note: It is a fantastic place to view beautiful dramatic sunsets. Every day at dusk, tourists throng the area to witness the magnificent silhouette of the temple against the glowing horizon.

Even less than my other photos, these three are not presented for any kind of photographic competence but rather as simple testimonials to what beauty remains after the Woolsey Fire.
I have not yet had the courage to head into the burn zones, to see what can be seen beyond the 101 freeway but I know the destruction is both awesome and terrible.
A good friend of mine spends much of his day riding (or is that racing?) on the canyon roads between the valley and PCH. The other day he told me that he was depressed and without thinking I asked him why.
He said, "Because it's all burned." I wanted to hit him with a philosophical way of looking at it but I stopped myself. In my heart I knew that I and many other felt exactly the same kind of deep loss that he did.
Others, of course, have lost more than can be imagined.
It all got me thinking once again about what we still have here in our corner of Los Angeles County. The answer is that we have a lot. The best of it now feels even more fragile and under threat than it did just a few weeks ago.
Anyway, I present these three images as small and humble testimonials to the beautiful hills and grasses and trees that are still here for us to enjoy.
