I'm happy to admit this photo of the Grande Arche was inspired by others I'd seen on Flickr. I've given it my (almost) trademark sq crop / blue tint treatment to give it a bit of a twist.

From Wikipedia : "The Arche is almost a perfect cube (width: 108m, height: 110m, depth: 112m); it has been suggested that the structure looks like a four-dimensional hypercube (a tesseract) projected onto the three-dimensional world. It has a prestressed concrete frame covered with glass and Carrara marble from Italy and was built by the French civil engineering company Bouygues."

the square at the intersection of the main east-west axis (called the Decumano) and the north-south axis (Cardo) of the Expo Milano 2015. For the next few weeks, I will be posting my photos of this "World's Fair", the first was at London's Crystal Palace in 1851 and last held in Shanghai in 2010. Hope I won't bore you but the Expo was the main reason I went to Milan, with side trips to the Lakes - Como, Maggiore and Orta. I find these expos very interesting as so many countries of the world gather in one place to showcase their arts and culture, as well as architecture, design, gastronomy, technology, products and destinations for tourism. Food technology and production is the central theme of this particular expo running for 6 months and ending on the 31st of October 2015.

Olympiastadion is of course the stadium at Munich's Olympia Park - host of the 1972 Olympic Games. We try to scope out Olympic parks wherever we go, and this one was truly amazing. The stadium was built to hold 80,000 spectators and rises high above Trümmerberg - a field of hills created by massive bombs dropped by the Allies in WWII. The architects responsible for the buildings of the park were Frei Otto and Günther Behnisch and the men were responsible for the incredibly unique tensile canopy type structure seen in much of the park. The 1972 Summer Olympics was heavily overshadowed by the terrorist attacks on the Israeli Olympic Team, but the Olympia Park venue proved that Democracy in West Germany was moving the country forward to amazing heights. Having the stadium all to ourselves on an early September evening some 50 years later was something we won't soon forget~!

This photo of the Millennium Dome (now the O2) was taken on New Years Eve, 1999. Honestly. A friend and I spent the day in London photographing Architecture and then we rushed home for a big 'knees up'.

In an effort to address the issue of wind tunnelling through the Grande Arche they've installed these glass wind breaks in the form of a Contemporary Art Installation. The overlapping shadows make some great shapes adding layers of complexity to the space.

The “Arizona” is one of our most popular and dynamic looking pre-designed canopies. Its simple arch shape design accommodates many applications including a performance stage, pool canopy, festivals, or outdoor dining at restaurants. It also has optional and demountable sidewalls.

First impressions are important. The entrance walkway or reception area of your building is often the first look a patron or potential customer has of your organization. The addition of a #tensilestructure could greatly enhance the first impressions you receive.

Tensile Structures are not only beautiful but remarkably functional. During these strange times, outdoor shelter allows us all to enjoy the fresh air and be socially distant on rainy, snowy, and even sunny days. With LED lighting tensile structures provide a wonderful level of safety for your team and they compliment your work environment.

Tensile Structure Systems transformed this luxury condominium pier into a magnificent escape for residents and visitors with the inclusion of this very sleek #tensilecanopy.

We are so excited about this recent project! These new modern walkway structures are protecting school children from the elements on their way to and from school and in between classes.

...and its ingenious roof

[Panorama stiched from 4 photos]

Designed by the German architect Günther Behnisch and the engineer Frei Otto, the stadium was considered revolutionary when it was built in 1972.

Calculating the whole structure requires to solve an equation with more than 1,000 variables, impossible at the time. It took until 1989 before it was possible to calculate the roof using a computer.

The structure is suspended with steel cables from 12 giant masts. The masts are mounted on ball-bearings that allow them to move one meter at their top.

The roof has a surface area of 74,800 m2

Tensile Structure Systems designs and manufactures beautiful, unique #tensile walkway shades that modernize the aging architecture and can rejuvenate the feel of an area. Imagine walking to work or to class before and then again after this structure is installed. Architecture is everything.

Beneath the iconic tensile roof of Munich’s Olympic Stadium, a different kind of sport takes place.

While the 1972 structure rises in quiet monumentality, its silhouette a hallmark of architectural ingenuity, young people dive and leap on sunlit sand courts in the foreground.

This is a snapshot of contrast: engineered steel and carefree play, historical weight and summer lightness.

Captured with the Leica D-Lux 8, this photo blends modernism with motionless serenity – Munich’s Olympic legacy, seen through the rhythm of everyday life.
