The Bananaquit is a tiny bird that we saw quite a few of during our October visit to Costa Rica. They always seemed to be singing so I was happy to get this shot of one announcing its presence.

The ubiquitous Tropical Kingbird seemed to be a constant companion during our trip to Costa Rica earlier this month. They seemed to be everywhere we went and were a constant eye-catcher as we were searching for birds. I couldn’t resist the opportunity to click a few shots off of this one who happily posed right next to the road.

This female Rufous-winged Tanager was a nice surprise on our way into Tenorio National Park earlier this month during our visit to Costa Rica. Several of them were feeding in the trees at the entrance to the park which got us moving. It was exciting to finally get a close shot of a female, so far I had only gotten males.

We encountered this male Slaty-tailed Trogon while hiking to the blue waterfall at Tenorio National Park during our visit to Costa Rica this month. We followed it along the trail for quite some time trying to get a good angle for a photo but it really seemed to like staying high in the trees. This was the best shot I was able to get of this neat looking bird.

The Nicaraguan Grackle is one of the highly sought after species that can be found in the Cano Negro area so we always make sure to keep our eyes open for them when we are in the area. We had some luck earlier this month when our eagle-eyed boat captain spotted this male singing away from the top of some trees along the Rio Frio. This bird is special because it has such a small range which is from western Nicaragua to northern Costa Rica.

The Roadside Hawk was as I recall the most common raptor we encountered during our visit to Costa Rica this month. This individual was appropriately in a tree on the side of the road.

It was a wet, wet hike down to the waterfall Rio Celeste in the Tenorio National Park in Costa Rica. Into every rain forest a little (or a lot) of rain must fall! The weather did give the rain forest atmosphere. By the end of the day, my fitbit said I walked 19K steps and 82 floors. #rioceleste #tenorionationalpark #costarica #costaricagram #costaricalife #costaricaphoto #costaricatraveler #costarica

The rain held off until we actually arrived at the Llanos de Cortez Waterfall in Costa Rica. Swimming is allowed in this pool so we joined the raindrops and swam. #rioceleste #tenorionationalpark #costarica #costaricagram #costaricalife #costaricaphoto #costaricatraveler #costarica

One of my wishes when visiting Costa Rica was to see wild sloths. We visited a Sloth Reserve near Tenorio National Park. Though we just had a torrential downpour (and would have another as we walked through the reserve), we got a few great views of the sloths. Yes, they move as slow as advertised! By default, my wildlife setting on my camera is on burst mode - not really needed for this sluggish sloth! #sloth #sloths #costarica #costaricagram #costaricalife #costaricaphoto #costaricatraveler #costarica

There was a lot of color in Costa Rica, but this photo seemed to work well with B&W processing. Rainy, misty hike in the rain forest. Rio Celeste in the Tenorio National Park

Our tour of the Sloth reserve in Costa Rica also brought us some other local critters including a couple of Strawberry Poison Dart Frogs. They were TINY and I probably wouldn't have noticed them had the guide not pointed them out despite them being mere feet from the path we were on. My motto for Costa Rica was "look but don't touch!" #costarica #costaricagram #costaricalife #costaricaphoto #costaricatraveler #costarica

Celeste River in Tenorio National Park, Costa Rica. It is notable for its distinctive turquoise coloration, a phenomenon caused by a chemical reaction.

Chemicals contained within the waters of two rivers react to create the vivid blue color of Rio Celeste in Costa Rica.

Rio Celeste means light blue river, because of the color of the river is apparently due to chemical reactions between elements coming off the volcano, including calcium carbonate and sulfur, at a point known as "Los Tefiideros" (The Dyers) exactly the place where the amazing mix is generated.

The tiny blue jeans dart frog is one of Costa Rica’s most colorful and iconic amphibians. As adults, blue jeans dart frogs measure between 0.75 and one inch long. Usually found on the forest floor, hunting for the ants and mites that make up 90% of its diet.
