The site where the Crowne Plaza once stood is changing again with a new temporary Christchurch market. May 25, 2013 Christchurch New Zealand.

A striking temporary structure is set to bring new life to the central city and facilitate events in Christchurch’s former Crowne Plaza site.

Construction of the impressive series of six-metre-high vault-like frames, named The Arcades Project, began on Monday and should be completed by the end of the month. The structures will create two arcades, each consisting of five bays, leading from Victoria Street to the entrance to Victoria Square.

The joint initiative led by the Festival of Transitional Architecture (FESTA), architecture graduate Andrew Just and Dr Ryan Reynolds (lecturer in Theatre and Film Studies at the University of Canterbury), and Life in Vacant Spaces will be relocatable and reconfigurable with the potential to enliven vacant sites around the city for the next 25 years.

Arcades designer Andrew Just (also responsible for Artbox) says the forms will give visual and spatial focus to a site and offer a structure for many potential uses. “It is both a dramatic framework for temporary activity on a site and also a piece of urban design offering amenity to the site and its surrounds.”

The Arcades Project’s shapes are inspired by the stone entrance to Canterbury’s Provincial Council Buildings. “The form links to our Gothic Revival heritage while the use of engineered timber hints at a possible architectural future for the city.”

Just says the frames are strong enough to be covered or provide support for electricity and lighting, depending on the events they are hosting. “They are particularly designed with markets in mind, which can be slotted in along the sides. But we also see them inspiring all kinds of pop-up activity, including outdoor performances.

The Arcades will become a key site for the second Festival of Transitional Architecture in October. FESTA director Dr Jessica Halliday says the project could not have happened without a great deal of community support. “Local and national companies have donated significant in-kind support and given advice to make this happen. It really goes to show the incredible goodwill and excitement to make the transitional city a beautiful and lively place.”

The Blythswood Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. had started business in a new yard at Scotstoun, Glasgow, in 1919 - a relatively late entrant into this then staple business of Clydeside. They became known for the construction of tankers and managed to survive the vicissitudes of the 1930s in relatively good shape. In 1928, the Yard was acquired by the Northumberland Shipbuilding Company Limited, of Howdon-on-Tyne and in 1941 there was expansion to a site on the opposite, south bank of the Clyde this being the Braehead Works in Renfrew mentioned here.

In post-war years, despite a good relationship with the Furness Withy Line amongst others, the relatively small size of the berths at the yard started to count against the company and by the early 1960s, with orders sparse, one of the products they turned to was this; mobile home construction. Sold as either 'intermediate homes' or also as temporary offices, libraries, classrooms or site premises, the "Clansman" structures do look a wee bit ship like. I wonder how many were sold and were they went into use?

The company did not last long after this advert appearing closing in late 1964, sold out to the Norcross Organsiation and the yard was subsumed into the neighbouring Yarrow Yards.

A view of the Marina Bay Sands Resort with the flat structure on top of the hotel, the full wheel of the Singapore Flyer and some temporary structures meant for the Formula One race on which work is happening. This is the view from the water, on a Duck Tour cruise which goes on both land and water. The Singapore Flyer is a giant Ferris wheel located in Singapore, in the Marina area, right next to the Marina Bay Sands resort, with the exact area being the Marina Promenade. The Flyer is based on the Londoneye, another giant observation platform. The Singapore Flyer presents a great view of the city and some of the attractions. The Flyer has a total height of 165 meters, and reaches 42 stories tall (and is taller than London Eye by 30 m). The Singapore Flyer was opened in April 2008 to the general public. There are 28 capsules in the Flyer, with each capsule holding 28 people. Each trip lasts around 30 minutes. The Flyer however is not the tallest structure in the region, with buildings nearby being taller. Sightseeing buses, along with an MRT station, provide easy access to the Flyer.

The Ross Auxiliary Building that was setup for the Ross Construction Project was finally taken down and moved out. It had a final stop in town at Briarwood Mall - a place to stage its final removal from campus. The Ross Auxiliary Building - or MOTown - as I liked to call it - was my home from 2014 to 2016. It was used by other groups over the last five years. Taken over a few days in August, 2021.

Detail of graffiti including a trademark white glove, in tribute to Michael Jackson.

Public grafitti and tribute to the popular singer Michael Jackson outside the 02 / Millenium Dome in Greenwich, London.

Jackson had been due to perform his This Is It concerts at the venue beginning 13 July 2009. I was at the venue on 1 August 2009, what would have been the 9th concert date in the run.

Several walls of tribute sprung up following Jackson's death on 25 June 2009. Nowhere was quite as poignant as the venue he was due to play.

A Capsule in Time by Marina Tabassum and her firm, Marina Tabassum Architects (MTA). Along the north-south axis of the park, A Capsule in Time features an elongated capsule-like form with a central court that aligns with Serpentine South’s bell tower. Inspired by summer park-going and arched garden canopies that filter soft daylight through green foliage, the structure is comprised of four wooden sculptural forms with a translucent façade that diffuses and dapples light when it enters the space. Opens on the 6th June until 26th October 2025
