Woman in office uses telephone headset.

My new obsession is a sailboat. Not that I like sea that much, but I love the freedom implied. Being able to travel on a confortable boat, with no noisy neighbors or telemarketing calls. Just water all around, stopping city after city, getting supplies, living just to live. Must be an amazing sensation. And of course, sunrises in the middle of the ocean must be spetacular :-)

Another image from Thomas Edison's laboratory, where so many modern conveniences of life originated. It was with this very telephone that Edison made a test call to his assistant and uttered the immortal words, "Mr. Watson, come here -- I want to see you." It was the first known instance of an unwanted caller disrupting someone's dinner, and established the basic mode of operation still used today by the modern telemarketing industry.

EM loves the phone so I think I'll just start handing it over for him to chatter on when they call.

So with my retirement, from the Coast Guard, rapidly approaching, I have been thinking more of what I want to do when I grow up. I have been thinking of starting my own telemarketing business. I know to be successful, I may need to keep things, well cheap for a while. Regardless I know I need an office and I think I may have found the one. Behold the future home of Bozarth Enterprises.

Fucking Rogers Home Phone telemarketing spam douchebags.

Eeyugh… What happened again? Right, Mr.“my name makes sense now” zapped me. So that's what electrocution feels like. Zero out of ten, would not get shocked again. Wait a second, why am I in a glass cage? Whuh-oh, Shocker must've finally handed me over to his mysterious employer. At least, it won't be a mystery for long.

-Spider-Pip stands up and examines the room-

Hm, whoever it is must’ve been going for a creepy, medieval motif, I swear it looks like Latveria in he--Oh snap. Doom. I am literally in Dr. Doom’s house! I need to get out of here!

-Spider-Pip tries to escape by attacking his cage but is met with another, smaller shock-

Spider-Pip: “Argh! Again, really?”

-Suddenly, a door at the other end of the room opens and out walks the literal personification of intimidation itself...-

Spider-Pip: “Dr. Doom.”

Doom: “You are familiar with me, Spider?”

He’s trying to intimidate me, I can't show any fear.

Spider-Pip: “I'm familiar with the fact that your a big, metal jerk.”

(Seriously though, I'm kinda’ freakin’ out!)

Doom: “Strong words from the one in the cage.”

That is a good point. Still, I need to stay stoic.

Spider-Pip: “What I want to know is how you know who I am?”

Doom: “Simple. Know thine enemy, Spider-Pip. I’m sure you’re familiar with what I’m capable of?”

Spider-Pip: “Let’s see... Telekenisis, teleportation, telepathy, telemarketing. Wait, not that last one.”

Doom: “I’ll have you know that I am not in a gaming mood.”

Spider-Pip: “Why? You just were delivered a superhero. I imagine that's the supervillian version of buying a new phone.”

Doom: “Because, you are of no use to Doom.”

Spider-Pip: “If I’m so useless, then why did you pay Shocker to capture me?”

Doom: “I didn’t, that buffoon mistook me for his overseer, the two having never met.”

Spider-Pip: “Wow, you were sure at the right place at the right time.”

Doom: “...Indeed. Now silence yourself while Doom seeks out a use for you.”

-Doom steps over to a console and begins typing-

Spider-Pip: “Did you just refer to yourself in the third-person?”

Doom: “Doom shall not take criticism from the likes of you.”

Spider-Pip: “Well then, Spider-Pip shall not give criticism to the likes of you.”

Doom: “It is unwise to test me.”

Spider-Pip: “You mean it's unwise to test Doom.”

Doom: “Enough.”

-Doom presses a button on the console and Spider-Pip is zapped unconscious for a third time-

Doom: “Don't say I didn't warn you.”

Quick note for this part and basically all parts going forward, give me a break with the sets. I really don't have a lot of good bricks for building stuff like walls, and it's hard to have sets without those. :P Also, after spending so much time writing I have very little patience for building.

Also, thanks once again for all your great feedback! It's more than helpful and I appreciate it. (As long as it's not about the sets. xP)

Today's from basement to riches story and sketch "by me" is about Smig and and his brother Smig 2 you see driving away from the first Tiki Hut Moon Pie shop on Earth, in Death Valley. The Smig brothers grandmother bought the first Tiki Hut franchise on Earth for the boys, mostly to get them out of her basement sewing room, where they had been living for the last 37 years, after graduating from "MIT" Mars Institute of Telemarketing. As you look back at the Tiki Hut

you can see the Smig brothers 8 foot tall cousin, operations manager and moon pie baker Sheelee who until last week was the only Martian female cyberpunk pipe fitter working at nearby area 51, but area 51 pipe fitting is a story for another time, until then taa ta the Rod Blog.

Staff of Programmes Ltd, London, England. Dateline: mid-1980's.

Programmes Ltd. was the UK's sales sensation of its time. These people could sell anyone practically anything, legal or not: they worked insanely hard and made their company the industry leader in about two years. No wonder they quickly won Britain's top phone marketing award.

Never mind marketing – this is about a phenomenal group of people whose story has never been told. If a history of cults in modern Britain were to be written, these people would be in it. Fact: all or almost all the staff seen here are graduates of the controversial - some would say notorious - Exegesis Seminar. Without Exegesis, Programmes would never have existed. It was these men and women who launched Programmes in Bristol and later London. They quickly proceeded to revolutionize telephone marketing in the UK. The year was 1981.

.

Founded, inspired and controlled by the charismatic Robert Daubigny, a master trainer, Exegesis copied the style and content of Werner Erhard's est training – and pushed further. Exegesis seminars were much smaller, more intense and confrontational than est trainings. Once the seminar commenced its four long days in a hotel room, you quickly realized the trainer was not like anyone you had ever met. He, or she, was ruthless. It was as if your game was up. You could not hide. Nothing had prepared me for it.

Was it disturbing? Absolutely. Was it abusive? Did it go 'too far'? I never witnessed that. The British media were extremely prejudiced about Exegesis and slammed it as a scam and worse. I cheerfully disagree.

A man needs a little madness or else he never dares to cut the rope and be free.

—Nikos Kazantzakis

If anything, I thought Exegesis did not go far enough; still, of what use would the most brilliant training be if it was so shocking that the authorities banned it?

Active in England and Wales from the late-70s to the mid-80s, with headquarters in Bristol and London, whoever was lucky - or doomed - enough to do the Exegesis Seminar, and had the nerve to endure it to the end either went through hell and came out transformed, as we used to say, or merely wasted time, money and the opportunity of a lifetime – and didn't. By normal, conventional standards it was a rash and scary thing to do.

www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/documentaries/features/gurus.shtml

Given Exegesis' damn-the-torpedoes brand of full-frontal experiential education, toxic media reportage and ensuing notoriety were all but guaranteed. In fact, Exegesis got such lousy press it led to hostile questions in the UK Parliament. Thus, from Hansard:

hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1984/may/14/mr-ashley...

Full disclosure: I never worked for Programmes. I took part actively in Exegesis. Did I like it? No. I loved it. I hated it. I was fascinated by it, and at times disgusted as well. I wanted to get out, I wanted to stay in. It was as if we were being cooked in a cauldron of ever increasing commitment to be fully here now. My time in Exegesis was priceless, unforgettable. It invited me to experience passion, excellence, total commitment, trauma, grace, and enlightenment. If you could stand it, Exegesis was the shock treatment of your life (those barf bags under every chair in the seminar? They weren't props). Every moment was wake-up time: take full responsibility - no excuses! now! now! now! Committed exegesis graduates were like warriors without a war – or rather the war Robert had us fighting was no less than the age-old spiritual war against our own copping out, against apathy, against the fear-driven betrayal of life, truth and of love.

Your greatest gift lies beyond the door named 'fear.'

—Sufi aphorism

“The need for truth is more sacred than any other need.”

—Simone Weil

Well, that was what fired me up. Other graduates responded differently. For many, the power they discovered in the seminar was promptly deployed in business; in this, Exegesis' series of communication, and other-themed, seminars were very successful. The applications for sales were obvious, and in Programmes they were put to full use.

Reality check: if Exegesis sounds implausibly gruelling, idealistic and too good to be true, well, it was. Personal integrity was hammered into us at seminars; yet, outside, the Exegesis ethic was to go for results by whatever, uh, worked. Morality was irrelevant: ends justified the means. Even healthy and creative criticism was angrily rejected: unquestioning trust in Robert's directives and appointees trumped all other considerations. Dysfunction shadowed enlightenment in a weird duet. Largely as a result, project after project was launched with high hopes only to go nowhere.

Away from the seminar – only, there was no 'away' from the seminar – there was no escape from the in-your-face demands by staff for more sacrifice, more commitment and most of all, more registrations. We grunts, called gaspers (graduate assistant seminar programme: an ultra-committed corps of unpaid employees) were not allowed to forget that Job One was to get people, thousands, millions of people, the whole freaking world! to do the Exegesis Seminar.

"Hello, I want to offer you this unique opportunity to be humiliated, taken apart and turned inside-out in front of strangers. This is your once in a lifetime chance to totally transform your life and get enlightened."

I mean, come on. You had to be crazy, right? We were!

Yes, I took part in the drive, in 1981, to swing an election in a heavily Labour constituency of London to our very own candidate, a respectable lawyer. Unknown to the public, not to mention the dear old oblivious Liberal Party, she was in fact an exegesis staff-member taking orders from Robert. In the weeks before election day, busloads of well-dressed graduates from Bristol joined London graduates in canvassing the entire borough, door to door, clipboards in hand, scripts memorised, getting the answers we wanted.

Using my deafness as an excuse I had at first not wanted to do it, then changed my mind. It turned out beautifully, blowing away yet another old limiting belief: "I can't do canvassing because I'm deaf". Going door to door meeting all kinds of people (years later I recall how kind they were to give me their time) and asking for their vote, and often getting it, was when I first realised my being deaf is, paradoxically, a gift, also an exquisite joke, opening me to total listening, without prejudice, a listening that transcends communication and opens to – whoa! – communion. Nothing else but total listening was – is – the answer to the koan of my deafness. How perfect it was. My world was rocked! Could I have learned this by following social norms and having a conventional education? Fat chance.

“The deepest level of communication is not communication, but communion. It is wordless. It is beyond words, and it is beyond speech, and it is beyond concept.” —Thomas Merton

How grateful I am that Exegesis was almost nothing like Aum Shinrikyo, or Heaven's Gate, or People's Temple, of "drinking the Kool Aid" infamy.

Being unreasonable, risking yourself and doing the impossible was the Exegesis way. That was what I got from my encounter with Robert D'Aubigny and his students.

Incidentally, in that election the Liberal Party, the Labour Party and even MI5 never knew who we were until the votes were in and it was too late. Exegesis' candidate came second, almost winning the seat against all the odds.

Ah, memories. Yes, I witnessed the rise and fall of Microlight Engineering Ltd. (made hang-glider-like planes from imported kits), an Exegesis front company in the heart of Bristol's old industrial district. All the employees were exegesis graduates, including - fatally - its management. Its too-trusting graduate founder was soon financially ruined... Yes, I was in at the beginning of the powerplays called the Bristol Project (aim: to recruit key people in the city, and grow Robert's influence there) and the Glastonbury University project (aim: a university teaching enlightenment or whatever else Robert wanted)

Dodgiest of all – or perhaps not – was the 'Money Seminar' (Bristol, 1981) in which Robert raked in serious cash from us suckers running a one-game casino, week after week... until we wised up and clammed up. How it worked: every graduate in the room wrote down their high bid in secret and handed it to a staff-person. The highest bidder won half the total pool. To this day I remember the awful look on the face of neophyte graduate D_ R_ as he learned that he had won that night's bout with his huge wager – and that after the organization had skimmed off its hefty cut he'd actually get back about half his stake. We all cheered for the winning loser!

While not as unfortunate as my hapless cultmate I too was taken for a tidy sum before catching on. Ouch!

The wackiest Exegesis project of them all? No contest: the Total Transformation of Society – yes, this includes you, dear reader – in 4 years. Or was it two? Launched at a much-heralded gathering of all exegesis graduates, led by Robert himself, in a city-owned hall at the foot of Park Street, Bristol in 1981, it was to begin with us 'transforming' the city, and go viral from there. If I recall aright, Robert declared the project a success after two years.

Or was it one? Whatever.

Anyway, every Exegesis project more or less failed, with the glittering exception of Programmes. It made Robert D'Aubigny extremely wealthy.

In 1986 Exegesis ceased operations, having transformed itself into Britain's top telephone marketing firm: Programmes.

The people I trained with in Exegesis still have a place in my heart – you never forget your first time! I wanted more, and became somewhat of a glutton for seminars and groupwork in the 1980s. Pursuing my passion for enlightenment, I went to a zen monastery in California, then on to Esalen Institute, and did the est training and its various graduate seminars. At the last est training and the first Forum in San Francisco, I assisted Werner Erhard. Curious about Werner and est? Check out:

At the same time, I volunteered at The Breakthrough Foundation, an est offshoot, as also the Hunger Project, and the simply transcendent Holiday Project, and as my decade of crunchy cult goodness came to a close, Ron Kennedy's 'Man Woman Training'. The last of these I did, in Russia, afforded us western participants the eerie realization that we were doing a seminar peppered with KGB agents (Moscow, then-USSR, 1989).

No, they did not exactly get into the groove.

My third "100 Things About Me" list. Didn't think it would be a trilogy, did you? : ) Well, here we go again...

I've worn lipstick and a tutu, but on separate occasions, and have proof.

My belly button lint is always blue regardless of the colour of shirt I'm wearing.

In first grade, my friend told my crush that I liked her. She walked up to me on the playground, threw a fit, and told me she hated my guts. It crushed my little heart.

I eat Gerber baby food on occasion.

With clippers, I cut every hair off my body, except my head. Yes, even my twig and berries.

I wear a white T-shirt and jeans well.

Like Michael Jackson, I believe in perfection. But unlike Michael, I don't desire little boys. Or look like my sister.

The first girl I ever asked out worked at a Dairy Queen. I was turned down.

I lived in an apartment where the ceiling fell off. Worst apartment ever.

I once peed in the ocean. It was cold and I was all "wrapped up". Something... happened. The next time I went: blood. And fierce pain. Like a stream of salty razorblades passing through me. A little tip: drink more water, not less. Repair time is faster with less pain.

I feel pretty. Oh, so pretty.

I set off a fire alarm in City Hall as a kid.

I admire the altruistic nature of ants, but think they're a bit uppity.

I think chinchillas look blissfully peaceful when they're sleeping.

Flirting is one of my most cherished and creative pleasures.

I love frosted animal crackers

I love white chocolate covered pretzels

Just about anything that's frosted, I'll generally stuff in my mouth

I wonder, out of all the disciplines and arts taught in K-12, why is the art of humour overlooked? Possibly the most potent and pragmatic social tool you'll ever use, and it's all but neglected.

I find it strange that fundraising car washes are performed by underage girls. Why not just charge extra for your daughter to finish the job and give one of the "donors" a lap dance?

I can't eat white bread

The nihilist in me would love to see an Amy Winehouse / Pete Doherty lovechild.

I love being able to put a smile on a pretty girl's face. Game shows don't offer prizes that compare to that feeling.

Peppermint is my favourite mint.

I don't understand all the fuss over macadamia nuts. They're overpriced and lack flavor.

Cinnamon buns make me smile. Even their swirl gets me excited. The swirl of a cinnamon bun is proof that mankind is capable of introducing smile inducing beauty into the world. A hot bath and a cinnamon bun... dare to dream.

Turning a cat into a friend, who was a stranger just a moment before, makes me happy.

If I could be any movie hero, it would be a toss up between Wolverine, Indiana Jones, and Aragorn.

I find it interesting that women drool over shoes the way men drool over women.

I think it's equally as important to learn from your mistakes as it is to set out and make new ones.

I find it disturbing when women tell me "I need to go put my face on." Frightening.

Ben Franklin had many words of wisdom. He was also a ladies man. Somewhere, I believe, are the hidden works of Ben's writings on relations with women. I want it.

I've figured out how we can stop killer bees from killing. Get the queen bee hooked on the Chronic. Mellow that bitch's hive right out.

As a kid, I didn't realize Harrison Ford was both Han Solo and Indiana Jones.

I think the inclination to throw rocks is in a boy's blood.

I loathe the telemarketing industry

I love the smell of pistachio nuts

I'm told that, when my mom was changing my diaper as a baby, I peed in her face once.

I want to know where plants and animals branched off in the evolutionary chain. Did they indeed branch off, or were they always separate life forms?

I hate when people say "artsy fartsy"

Pet Peeve #1 - People who refer to stuffing as dressing.

Pet Peeve #2 - Magazines that don't number every page.

Pet Peeve #3 - People who pronounce Washington as Worshington. Bastards.

I'm pretty good at phone sex.

I respect a girl who can show a little cleavage.

A fish once nibbled on my nipple.

I've been approached by gay guys, and I'm told they find me attractive.

I wonder why colours fade, but white takes on colour over time. I think it's the Conspiracy of Yellow.

I think it's still a long ways off before the meek inherit the earth. But I'll still shake your hand when I do : )

I think it's cool that squirrels use powerlines as their own personal highway system

No matter how many samples I've tried, I still haven't developed a taste for beer.

I really don't like incense at all.

I believe that rights and freedoms aren't given. They're taken.

I think it's hysterically funny to stare at dogs and cats, eye to eye, when they're going number 2. Hilariously humiliating.

I'm a proponent of medically assisted suicide.

I once saved a ficus from certain death.

My first concert? Debbie Gibson. I know.

The first time I held hands with a girl romantically was with a girl I met on a Greyhound Bus.

I really like TV dinner desserts.

I'd like to sell Ben & Jerry's on an idea I have for Lizzy Borden ice-cream. It will have little chocolate axes and blood red raspberry swirls. Yeah, I don't suppose my serial killer themed ice-cream idea will fare well either. John Wayne Gacy's Rainbow Sherbet probably won't make it to a grocery store near you anytime soon, boys and girls. Sorry. I know you're disappointed.

I haven't thrown up in 22 years.

I have a pornographic picture involving Easter Peeps I've deliberated over whether or not to post for nearly a year now.

I want to know what bleach has against colour.

In my opinion, Holga shots look head and shoulders better in black and white.

I share a birthday with Ansel Adams.

I still wonder, if our body temperature is 98.6 degrees, why does it feel hot to us if it's 98 degrees outside? Wouldn't it feel just right? And if it's 98 degrees in a hot tub, why does that feel cold? I'm thoroughly confused.

I have a business idea: Scented mufflers. Because, if you're going to pollute, shouldn't it smell like roses?

Oh, and there's a completely weird video for this shot. For the Flickr On Location group.

Candid street shot, St George, Grenada.

A call centre or call center is a centralised office used for the purpose of receiving or transmitting a large volume of requests by telephone. An inbound call centre is operated by a company to administer incoming product support or information inquiries from consumers. Outbound call centers are operated for telemarketing, solicitation of charitable or political donations, debt collection and market research. In addition to a call centre, collective handling of letter, fax, live support software, social media and e-mail at one location is known as a contact centre.

A call centre is operated through an extensive open workspace for call centre agents, with work stations that include a computer for each agent, a telephone set/headset connected to a telecom switch, and one or more supervisor stations. It can be independently operated or networked with additional centres, often linked to a corporate computer network, including mainframes, microcomputers and LANs. Increasingly, the voice and data pathways into the centre are linked through a set of new technologies called computer telephony integration (CTI).

Orange Blossom Mall opened circa 1984. It was anchored by Sears and Belk-Lindsey. There really isn't much information about the place, but it seems to have begun its decline in the mid-90s and closed by about the end of that decade, more or less. Today, the former Sears anchor is home to the St. Lucie County School District offices, the Belk-Lindsey seems to be some sort of school, and a telemarketing firm occupies some of the inside. The mall's corridor is pretty much intact, down to generic mall benches and that bland type of artificial foliage you find in older malls.

It's definitely a little unnerving walking around the mall corridor. It's not totally void of people, as the sunken center court seems to be a lunch area for the telemarketer employees and a bunch of ladies dressed in scrubs.

What's interesting about this place is that it really didn't have any nearby competitor to drive it out of business. This was the only real mall in Fort Pierce, a city that doesn't have a lot of big box retailers and the like. Fort Pierce is a somewhat economically-depressed city and its demographics are vastly different from other cities along the Treasure Coast. I suppose that might've had something to do with the demise of the Orange Blossom Mall.

History[edit]

Taras Shevchenko was the third Ivan Franko-class passenger ship ship built by V.E.B. Mathias-Thesen Werft for the Soviet Union. Originally she was planned as the last ship of the series, but the Soviet Union's national shipping company Morflot decided to order two additional sisters, which made her the middle sister.[4] She was delivered to the Black Sea Shipping Company on 26 April 1967 and placed on cruise traffic.[5] Sometime during her Soviet Union career the Taras Shevchenko was rebuilt with a larger forward superstructure.[6][7] In 1989 she was chartered to Jahn Reisen for a five-year period. The Soviet Union broke up during this charter, and as a result of this the Taras Shevchenko was handed over to the state of Ukraine. Following the end of the Jahn Reisen charter in 1995, she was transferred to Blasco UK and re-flagged to Monrovia, Liberia. During the same year she was rebuilt at Odessa.[5]

In 1997 Taras Shevchenko was sold to the Ukraine-based Ocean Agencies who used her for further cruise traffic. In June 1998, when she was about to depart on a three-week cruise, the ship was arrested in Piraeus, Greece due to the company's financial problems. In July 1998 the ship was laid up at Ilichevsk, where she remained for five years.[5] In 2003 she was put back into service as a cruise ship by the Ukraine-based Antarktika JSC, who used her for cruises aimed at a Ukrainian cliente. This venture was not successful, and Taras Shevchenko was sold for scrap in 2004.[5] Renamed Tara,[1][2] the ship scrapped in India, in 2005.

Caratteristiche tecniche[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Storia[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

History[edit]

Eugenio C was ordered for the South American service by Costa (Linea C), to replace the Frederico C on that route.[3] Her keel was laid on January 4, 1964, with Eugenio C being delivered to Costa on August 22, 1966, the same day she set out on her maiden trans-Atlantic voyage. For 10 years she only operated trans-Atlantic voyages between Genoa and South America, until passenger loading dropped rapidly in the 1970s, when the Eugenio C began cruising. After 1983 she would cross the Atlantic Ocean twice a year on a repositioning voyage.[4] In 1984 she was extensively renovated and renamed the Eugenio Costa. It was planned the vessel would be renamed American Adventure and transferred to American Family Cruises, which was to be a branch of Costa, but this plan was never realized. Eugenio Costa completed her last cruise for her original owners in November 1996.

Costa sold the Eugenio Costa to the Bremer Vulcan shipyards in part exchange for the construction of the Costa Victoria. Lowline Shipping would go on to acquire her and well charter her to Direct Cruises, a British cruise line which offered budget cruises marketed via telemarketing. $12 million USD was spent on refitting the Eugenio Costa into the Edinburgh Castle. The vessel's mechanical problems brought about great difficulty to Direct and Lowline, until Direct filed for liquidation and Lowline Shipping filled for bankruptcy in 1999. Ownership of Edinburgh Castle was passed on to Lowline's main creditor, shipbuilder Cammell Laird.[5]

Cammell Laird chartered the vessel to Premier Cruises, renaming her The Big Red Boat II and having her go under a 10 month $25 million USD overhaul. Premier went into liquidation in September 2000, as a result Cammell Laird briefly chartered her to the United States Government, after which time she was laid up at Freeport, Bahamas [6] alongside fellow ex-Premier fleet mates Rembrandt and Big Red Boat III.[7]

Pop Culture[edit]

The Eugenio C has a very brief but close-up appearance in the Brazilian movie Roberto Carlos em Ritmo de Aventura (1968), as Roberto buzzes the ship with his helicopter (a Hughes 269) near Rio de Janeiro.

Demise[edit]

The Big Red Boat II was sold to Argo Ship Management, who kept her up on the market. By 2005 it was obvious cruise companies were not willing to take their chances with her due to her history of mechanical problems. The vessel was renamed Big Red, stopping in the Azores to refuel before being broken up for scrap at Alang scrapyards.[5]

Edinburgh Castle[editar | editar código-fonte]

The Big Red Boat II[editar | editar código-fonte]

Estou bem sozinha, embora queira alguem no futuro, mas antes so q mal acompanhada.

Riverside PACE (closed) [29,280 square feet]

4107/4109 W Mercury Blvd, Hampton, VA

This was originally a Big Star supermarket, which opened in May 1979 (the store was previously located a few tenants down next to the former Haynes Furniture, and they moved here so Haynes could expand into their former space). It has since housed:

*Lou Smith (opened in June 1982)

*Farm Fresh (opened in May 1987, closed in March 1988)

*Office Warehouse (opened in November 1989, closed on July 3rd, 1992)

*CCCI Inc. telemarketing (opened in January 1997)

*J. Crawford Group auction house (opened in 1999)

*Riverside PACE (opened in February 2008, closed in February 2017)

After a long 17 year run, one of the more unique stores that the Schuylkill Mall has had over its history has shut their gates for the final time. This gem of a store, Black Diamond Antiques and Collectibles, first opened in the fall of 1998 in the space that is now occupied by TruBridge. ( Telemarketing Center, see my set for a photo of it along with more information) Over the years, the store has moved several times, the first move being when it took over the anchor space that was originally Hess's in 2001. It stayed that way until October 2007, when it moved to the space that is now Dunham's Sports. It later moved back to the location in which it was before in 2012, although this time the store was split apart between Blum's Auction and the store itself.

Black Diamond's last day of business was Sunday, May 15th 2016. This leaves the ailing mall only two stores that can pass as anchors, namely Bon-Ton and Dunham's Sports. The future of the mall looks bleak to say the least. With it going up for Sherrif's sale in mid June due to the owners inability to pay property taxes and the last of the tenants abandoning it, I think its safe to say that this mall is finished

When I was a kid, this mall had three anchor stores. A Montgomery Ward, A JC Penny, and a Murphy's Mart. Later, it became Wards, Pennys, K-Mart, and Stone & Thomas, a really big deal!

Now, all of the anchor stores are gone (The last was Stone & Thomas, renamed Elder Beerman, and Wal*Mart, which had replaced K-Mart) There's not much left, but a telemarketing firm moved into the Wards building, so the Subway stays alive because of their lunch breaks. There's a few thrift stores and an antique shop, too.

The restaurant at right has been closed my entire life. Even when the mall was thriving, it was closed. There are still settings on the table... THIRTY YEAR OLD SETTINGS.. waiting for the stupid place to open again...

Other stores I remember from my childhood:

Mountain Snow - Snow cones

Trends - Card/Gift shop... my favorite store ever because it had TONS of Sanrio stuff!

Wiener World - The only real eatery in the mall, had hot dogs and ice cream. The old men would always sit there and chat.

Children's Circus - The Toy Store

Hot Sam's - The best pretzels

Record Bar - The Record Store

Pizza Inn - The Pizza Place

Claire's - Duh

At least 3 jewelers

Foot Locker

Dr. Pet

Radio Shack

Aladdin's Castle - The Arcade

Several shoe stores

Several dress shops

Fashion Bug

Some "Heavy Metal" T-Shirt shop place (Can't remember the name)

An Airbrush place

The Great American Cookie Company

A hair salon

A Hallmark

maybe more will come to me.

Many of the stores haven't been occupied in years, even decades! But the ones that are still open seem to do okay.

Sailor's Monument

The Sailor's Monument, a national monument of Norwegian seamen's efforts at sea, from the Viking Age to the 20th century, paid for by funds collected and unveiled on June 7, 1950.

In the maritime city of Bergen, it goes without saying that a memorial dedicated to this important and honorable professional group had to be centralized space in the city.

This demand was met in full when the municipality allowed Dyre Vaas's towering, seven-meter-high sculptural tribute to the sailor's stand to dominate the eastern end of the city's main street, Torgallmenningen.

But many people reacted to the fact that the Sailor Monument here stood a good distance from the right element of seafarers, the sea.

It was only in 1999, almost 50 years after the unveiling, that this objection succeeded to some extent. As part of the extensive renovation of the Torgallmenning completed this year, a large water pool was built around the monument. After this, 12 tough sailors, cast in bronze, were able to reflect in the water. Waves around the monument, on the other hand, only criticize the location and the artistic design that has created.

The road from idea to realization of the Sailor Monument was very long. The idea was erected as early as 1917 by the Bergen Shipowners' Association and the Bergen Skipperforening, which wanted a memorial to war-lost seafarers.

Sofus Madsen undertook to make a draft based on this wish, but it was rejected.

It was concluded that the monument should express a general tribute to the sailor's stand rather than dwell especially on the victims of the war.

In 1938, open competition was announced, and a total of 45 drafts came in. The winner was "The Trial of Happiness", submitted by the telemarketing Dyre Vaa.

Because of the war, it was 12 years before the monument could be unveiled. The honorable assignment was left to the then Minister of Industry Lars Evensen.

The result was a startling, but controversial, sculptural account of Norwegian shipping, expressed in the form of 12 burly sailor statues and high above them eight reliefs on two heights that contribute with further knowledge.

Four centuries of Norwegian maritime history pass revue on the monument's equally numerous sides.

The tenth century is presented as "Vinland's journey", and the statues depict a chieftain with a spear, a skull in leather skins and a berserk with a shield on his back. The reliefs show a Viking ship under sail and a meeting between Vikings and Indians.

The eighteenth century, "Greenland's journey", is symbolized by a scouting fisherman, a full-fledged captain in the process of giving orders and a sailor with a pipe in his mouth.

The reliefs are related to Greenland's rediscovery from Bergen. You see Hans Egede preaching the Christian gospel to the Eskimos and a stack drain with a sea worm bowing under the ship.

On the panel for the nineteenth century, with the inscription "Kornferd", you see a ship with a top hat, a first-time boy and a pilot. The reliefs depict whaling and scenes from a shipyard.

The twentieth century has the inscription “Oljeferd”, and the sculptures depict a deck boy, a helmsman with binoculars and a wrench machinist. The reliefs depict a ship in front of a rising sun and a resurrection scene. Drowned awakened to eternal life by an angel.

As models, Dyre Vaa did not use seafarers, but people from his community. Several Telemark farmers from that time must have been easily recognizable. The artist was working on the monument throughout the war. In 1944, no less than 25 plaster statues lined up in his studio in Rauland. The number was subsequently more than halved. A very rich memorial must be said to be the Seamen's Monument, a work of art that alone is an entire art exhibition.

Mester: Hogy tellet a tegnapi napod?

Kedves emberek.

A vezetőség is kiváló személyekből áll.

M: Jövőhéten ott leszel? Vagy máshol?

V: Remélem, hogy a főnököm odavezényel. Van ott valaki, akit nagyon szívlelek. Kedeves nekem.

M: Aha.

A múltkor kaptam ajándékba két üveg bor csodálatosságot.

M: Meddig tartott?

V: Szerinted?

És tavaly is megajándékoztak sör és szájder külenlegességekkel. Nagyon ízlett a francia szájder.

M: És azok meddig tartottak?

V: Szerinted?

M: Térjünk a képre.

V: Térjünk.

M: Túl sok a sötét árnyalat.

V: Nem sok.

M: Megint a sötétből haladsz a fény felé.

V: Talán fordítva jobb lenne? Nem vagyok Al Capone.

M: Ezt hogy érted?

V: Egyszer Al Capone és barátai valahol láttak sétáló szerzeteseket. Al Capone láttukra barátai felé fordult és ezt mondta nekik: Ezek oda mennek, ahonnan mi jövünk.

M: Miért szeretsz a sötétben sétálni?

V: Miért szeretetnek mások is? Láttam embereket.

M: Nem szereted a fényt?

V: Mert jobban vonz a láthatatlan fény.

M: Köszönöm. Ennyi elég.

Fény és árnyék, merengés vagy netán kérdés?

Hol jobb? Láthatalanul az árnyak birodalmában?

Vagy netán a fény vetületén?

Nem vetület, nem is lét, sziporkázó múló remény.

So I call my mom, she said to get it off my chest

Remind myself the way you faded 'til I left

I cannot be your friend

I pay the price of what I lost

And what it cost

Now that we don't talk

You might be able to guess from the featured doll and outfit, but I actually took these photos a while back. I’d been holding on to them partially because I couldn’t figure out how I wanted to edit them… but mostly because they’re weird. Bright contrasting colors, an inexplicable BMR 1959 outfit on a Nu Face girl(😜), an old school telephone, a cat wrapped in a towel, pink fur carpet AND pink hair? I don’t know. I really love it but I don’t know where it came from. My original title for them was “Colette reconsiders a career in telemarketing”.

Anyway, I love the “vault” tracks on the re-release of Taylor Swift’s 1989. “Now That We Don’t Talk” not only has a stylized retro vibe but it centers around not talking to an ex and calling your mom to talk about it. So I decided to pair it with these photos, throw caution to the wind, and finally post them. So if nothing else, at least the song is really good. ;)
