SAN ANTONIO – (Oct. 17, 2024) – Rear Adm. Walter Brafford, commander, Naval Medical Forces Development Command (NMFDC) and chief of the U.S. Navy Dental Corps greets U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Benjamin Watson, commanding general, Training and Education Command (TECOM) at the 2024 Heroes of Military Medicine San Antonio Awards Program held at The Red Berry Estate. Brafford and Watson served as special guest speakers at the event. The awards program, hosted by the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc. (HJF), recognized exception community leaders who advance military medicine in and around the greater San Antonio area. Continuing in its inglorious' tradition of the politics of lies and smear campaigns, the AISA has written in its pamphlet dated 14.05.2011, "In Kerala too, the CPI(M) paid... for its pro-privatization, pro-corporate, anti-people policies. The people of Kerala have not forgotten how even Achuthanandan and the LDF government in Kerala sold public sector units inKerala and started the "smart city'' project." .

The previous Congress-led UDF government had ordered the closure or disinvestment of 25 public sector companies, but could not implement the order due to resistance from the Left and the trade unions. Nevertheless many of the companies had become dormant as 3026 workers were retrenched and the companies were run down by deliberate management inefficiency. When the CPI(M)-led LDF government came to power in 2006, 32 out of 44 companies under the Industries department were making losses. 17 units had remained closed for a long time and their assets were slated to be sold off. The LDF government re-opened them and took steps to regain their assets. The loss-making units were turned around through a slew of steps that included reorganising the management, settlement of dues to the banks and financial institutions, and periodic monitoring of performance. The PSU s were encouraged to support and cooperate with each other, and adequate budgetary support to them was ensured for their rejuvenation and modernisation. The acute shortage of workers and executives (a result of massive VRS during the previou_s UDF rule) was overcome through.fresh recruitment. Over 5000 fresh appointments were made in the companies, and the salary of workers was increased by 25-35 per cent. By 2010, only five companies were making losses. No public sector unit was privatized, not a single worker was retrenched. Instead of closing down or privatizing public sector companies as the AISA shamelessly claimed, the government took over a private sector company -Kerala Spinners -that was shut down in 2003 after it ran into losses, issued an ordinance to take over three others -Aluminium India Ltd, Travancore Irons Ltd. and Comtrust Textiles, and opened eight new PSUs -a hi-tech spinning and weaving mill at Komalapuram in Alappuzha district, a hi-tech weaving factory in Kannur, a textile mill in Kasaragod, a unit of Traco Cable Company in Kannur to manufacture wiring cable, a tool room of SIDCO in Kozhikode, a unit of Keltron at Kuttipuram, a forging unit at Shoranur and a meter factory of United Electricals in Palakkad. .
AISA' s claims on the smart city project smacks of sheer ignorance ifnot outright malice. The previous UDF government had decided to hand over the Infopark in Koehl, built with public money, to Tecom, the developers of Smart City-an IT township that would be coming up in Koehl. The ownership stake of the state government in the project was to be only 9°/o, 100 acres were to be handed over to Tecom for free and 136 acres were to be sold to it for a pittance of Rs.24 crores. The LDF government decided that the Infopark wouldn't be handed over, that the stake of the state government in the project would be 16°/o (which can be increased up to 26% after five years), that there would be greater public control over the project (whereby the Chairperson and two members of the Board of Directors would be government nominees and the participation of a government nominee would be essential for the quorum to be fulfilled), that no la.td would be handed over for free, and that Tecom would have to pay Rs.104 crores for the land to be leased to it. .
The revival of the public sector in Kerala during Left rule and the state's refusal to concede enormous concessions to the corporates to elicit investment (something that Prabhat Patnaik recently termed "the Kerala Strategy'') has attracted widespread praise. It showed that public sector enterprises can be nm efficiently and profitably without abandoning their social role. The historic performance of the LDF in the recently concluded Assembly elections owed substantially to the support that the Left's policies won among the people, especially among the working class. But then AISA couldn't help coming out with slanderous statements. Why, we wonder. Are they compulsive liars, or are they just a bunch of ignoramuses? .
