When I called the 800 number, I was told that the update on the CD in this package was for a feature the we do not use here.

When I told the friendly tech support rep that line #2 of the "Windows" section threw me, his response was "Oh, well, the instructions aren't very clear because they don't specify that you have to put the CD in."

I figured since there was a CD in the envelope, I'd have to put it into the machine, but I still don't completely understand what "Run to thru the update" means.

Setting up Jean and Natalina's new computer. I was happy to help them get better digital tools, so they can express themselves more fluidly. It's the least I could do for two of my favorite art collaborators.

In today's episode of How the Dell Turns, another very pleasant tech came out to attempt a repair (they've all been very nice). He replaced the video card and the motherboard. We turned on the laptop. We waited.

It was fine...for maybe five minutes. Then the screen went dark again.

This time, however, he was still here when it happened.

He puzzled, he mused, he checked settings, he wondered if it was a driver issue. He rebooted in safe mode. He rebooted and went into the BIOS...and the screen went dark.

Nope, definitely not a driver issue.

He replaced the LCD (this includes the requested inverter mentioned in our last episode).

We turned it on. We had a cup of coffee and chatted. We watched the monitor.

So far, so good.

We discussed what parts had NOT been replaced, and agreed the case, fan, processor, hard drive and memory were still original.

The monitor stayed on.

I thanked him and bid him farewell.

While I dare not say the computer is fixed (I won't believe that for at least another three or four months), I can say that I've uploaded and processed this photo, typed this description, and as of this moment (nearly an hour after the computer turned on), the monitor is still lit.

Here's hoping...
