Loki wasn't the only one having a few technical difficulties pole dancing at Codie's party....

I got stuck up there too!!! LOL

;-)

Just a note to advise due to serious Technical Difficulties this will be my last post until my computer can be repaired, restored, rebooted or ultimately replaced.

Because of the latest computer update, posting, editing, commenting or doing just about anything on my computer has become nearly impossible for the past few days. I am now forced to face the fact my computer is a dinosaur on its way to extinction. You have NO idea what it took just to prepare this simple edit.

While a new one is in my immediate future - not being technically savvy by any stretch of the imagination makes this a frightening endeavor. Hopefully the transfer goes smoothly and I haven't lost anything too important... except perhaps my mind.

Please stand by....

Vader only ever called a time-out once...

It seems everywhere you turn these days there is a picture of Space Mountain with the lights on... but after doing a quick flickr search, I didn't see too many like this one.

This is inside Space Mountain at the Magic Kingdom of Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida - taken from the TTA. This is right after you enter Space Mountain on the TTA, they had the lights on as Space Mountain was down for repair. ...took some pictures of the track as well, but if you want to see that just do a flickr search for "Space Mountain lights on" and there are hundreds by others.

Duncan House can be dark at night. But yes, you would figure that...

I've never been afraid around the place though...even though after getting my mail upon returning late at night from Thanksgiving break, I was surprisingly encountered with an individual who brandished a gun in my direction (loaded or unloaded a real 9mm beretta or not- they were inconsistent in their threatening posture and clearly either not 100% committed to the script or highly inexperienced) and asked, unintelligibly at first due to the muffling of their bandanna, to give up my money & later to empty my pockets...as my roommate came up behind me as I had asked for his assistance earlier in unloading my vehicle...they said it was a joke. Apparently I was "about to go crazy" as the other individual present commented. I had offered them my mail in an exacerbated tone, admitted that I was broke, and when asked to actually empty my pockets produced the $4 I had to my name (not including the 2 dollar bill I carry for luck or something, I've seriously had that thing REJECTED when I attempted to spend it once, simply on the basis of it being rare, not any less valid as currency.) and then offered my "crappy phone" as I started to dial 911- then roommate comes up behind me. (whom I might add was only there coincidentally as he has rarely been present at the apartment in the months he's been "living" here).

And yeah, I didn't get mugged here. And I still don't feel especially unsafe around here even with my former neighbor having let two individuals into his apartment who were asking questions got "cold clocked" and robbed a while before my personal incident.

At any rate, the place exudes a certain level of...danger. Though it had nothing to do with some guy getting stabbed a few years back, or getting shot or anything like that...

It has been known to flood...annually...and is a dangerous place to walk around as there are pointy sharp Yucca plants (sort of like cacti-like bushes with dagger bladed leaves) and holly bushes and malformed chain link fences surrounding the back side (to keep people from "falling off" the edge of the foundation as the place rests a bit on a slope).

Essentially, and this is part of why I'm not really afraid of break ins and at least used to never really lock my door...the place feels HOSTILE to intruders, interlopers and those unfamiliar to its own brand of security. A complex divided into four brick buildings under one roof...it is known a Duncan House, it is on Reed Street off of the Strip.

It should probably be condemned, but the brick exterior probably does save you some money on heating if you're willing to be a little cold at night during the winter...

There are other features that have become appealing due to familiarity, the blue + creme toned paint + brick feel around the place, the big roof for instance....the unstable balcony supports for the second-floor apartments, the sometimes un-level handrails on the stairs...the somewhat weak overhead lighting, the "porch" lights that for the most part don't work (I think the balcony lights are maintained, but the bulbs for the lights to the common areas outside aren't replaced).

All of this adds both to the appeal and negative qualities of the place.

And I really wouldn't mind having lived here for almost three years if a few things hadn't happened...

1. My apartment hadn't flooded...twice. (I'm telling you Annual Flooding...the water heater burst in my place and then in my upstairs neighbors and in another apartment or two around the complex that I've just found out about- last year the maintenance guy told my former roommate that there were 9 more that needed to be replaced after ours...the place is down to 6 or 7 more unless they finally did the risk assessment of the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" policy).

2. The rent wasn't going up significantly every year. Though not in violation of the lease laws or the lease agreement, a place that was once one of the most affordable in town isn't competing enough with other complexes price wise, though location and OUTWARD appearances may rival say "Pride's Court" or farther off-campus facilities (btw, don't buy a condo, not worth it. but they're opening up a ton of them around here).

At least pride's court has a pool and Alabama apartments has Gas stoves (you'd think paying more on your utilities would suck until black outs happen, and they do. Remember Katrina? That affected us directly too- just not nearly as bad. Power was only out for like days, not weeks and only like a handful of buildings were significantly damaged and/or destroyed as a result- "Duncan House"- admirably stood firm and only lost some shingles and took the weathering well otherwise).

Oh and 3. Things are more than likely "quick-fixed" and only squeeky wheels get greased...essentially you slowly either put up with a lower standard of living or take care of the living conditions as much as you can by yourself. My oven has a broken element and there hasn't been a work order form for a couple months. (not surprising since they've still yet to fix my ceiling...yes HOLES from the flood damage...though I could have called them like last week to do it.)

Oh well, enough bitching, hopefully I'll be out of this place before the end of June.

I'm certainly not renewing the lease, and may not have a choice in the matter at this date. (I really should have hustled on getting them in the place to fix things, now they might try to land some of the expenses on ME).

If you live in Alabama or just in the Tuscaloosa Area, write to the appropriate politicians and tell them that Landlord Tenant Laws STILL need reforming AND enforcement...but not limitations as to "Unrelated parties."

Oh, and buy renter's insurance...

While you figure out how you shorted out the system only a couple minutes into the show, you may as well take a photo of the audience. ;)

breahn is just getting a new computer after the (years old) old one finally died of overuse... still installing everything, patience appreciated :)

In the early days of TV, if there was a problem with the broadcast, someone would hold a large card in front of the camera that would say something like "We are experiencing technical difficulties. Please Stand By" That is what I am doing today

The motherboard on my 5 year old home built computer went bad. I don't have the money for another computer, so I have to replace the Motherboard. and of course, I have to upgrade the CPU, memory, video and power supply to work with a modern motherboard. And then, I'll have to reinstall Windows.

It's times like these I realize how much of a flickr addiction I have. In the mean time, I've had to dust off a 9 year old laptop to keep up with everything. I just hope I can get everything up and running before I run out of room on my camera's memory card.

GemStone 101: Managing Out of Memory Situations

Cannot for the life of me get the surround sound (or the wireless network card) to work on my pc since I moved. Granted I haven't spent much time trying, but it's still frustrating. Everything looks OK to me, so I'm at a loss.

Yeah, the streaks on this are from the camera...

No, it isn't a MECHANICAL problem with the camera (per say) or a CHEMICAL problem with the film...

See, there's this foam stuff they glued to the inside of the camera...it actually serves little purpose as to make the camera light tight or to avoid anything as far as I've observed, though it apparently did aid in sound dampening and possibly shock absorption...but since the camera was made in the SIXTIES, the material has DISINTEGRATED a bit, and essentially has become this sticky black mess...I THOUGHT at first this would be merely a nuisance...

BUT, the stickyness managed to find its way onto the film(?) and most certainly the guide plate (the slick black metal panel that pushes the film against the plane of exposure, allowing guidance of the film and proper exposure of the frame, etc.)

Suffice to say this sticky crap had an effect on the film.

This is obvious.

I didn't NOTICE this after I had run the Fuji Film through it, and will review the files I have from it to see if there is earlier evidence of it. I have a roll of Kodak that I used subsequent to the Fuji, but prior to the UC, so it MAY be unaffected by the stuff.

HOPEFULLY, since I have removed 99% of the black sticky foam crap and old adhesive marks with Masking/Freezer Tape (to be specific), the camera will not demonstrate this negative to exposure quality or the actual film state itself.

Had I had GAFFER's tape, or not found the tape I was using effective at not only covering, but REMOVING the old deteriorated foam and adhesive semi-goo, then I would have just covered everything in the first place or when I set about solving the streak problem.

I first noticed this problem on the negatives that the Walgreen's employee had erroneously recorded me as ordering (which they didn't let me keep as they needed to "count" the spent paper, essentially accounting for their mistake). Even though I was very concerned that it was in fact MY camera that was the culprit- I warned them of possible chemical or mechanical problems with the process as I didn't have the Ricoh on me to check it.

Suffice to say I was upset when I found out that the camera was the problem, so my Photo CDs and my more valuable negatives were affected as well.

The "streaks" as I'm calling them, don't appear to be just scratches or merely exposure disruptions...they are representative of direct trauma to at least one layer of the film and apparently the emulsion layer as well.

Oh well, live and learn.

Ruin film...and gain experience.

Trial and Error works for loads of things, hell it is partly how I noticed the lens I had on my Minolta XG-1 was broken in ADDITION to the XG-1 light meter apparently dying...

BUT, even though I have little planned for the cheap old camera body...I will add this simple statement I thought up during my recent "Camera Slinging" escapades.

Light meters...are for pussies.

Seriously, if you can't trust yourself to take a shot without some lights in the viewfinder or an outside tool to aide in calculating exposure time, you are not prepared to accept the consequences of pointing a camera, creating a composition in your head and shooting.

With or without prior consent, there are many things you can be held responsible for when taking an image.

This might be part of the reason why I've taken to just snapping semi-interesting objects and scenery around town lately and less people even with shots of people I know and don't know now uploaded to Flickr.

Oh well, enough ranting, right?

Technical Difficulties. Please Stand By.

Due to technical difficulties during a Rays-Yankees game, Sun Sports (eventually) began using the YES Network video with their own audio -- Sun Sports logo and the bottom-of-the-screen ticker inserted at Fox Sports master control.

From my napkin calculations there were 315 years of science and engineering education in the room.

Still it took us a good 45 minutes to figure out how to get a computer connected to the projector.

In our defense, there, ummm, was something wrong with the digital to analog converter.
