Since 2010, they've put messages in newspaper racks

They wrote: "San Francisco Media Co, owner of many newspapers in the Bay Area, is putting a call for artist to “ decorate” their obsolete and misused newspaper stands. Another effort of a corporation to try to “engage” with the local artist community by asking too many things and not offering a decent honorarium.

As many of you know, my collaborator and friend Eliza Barrios and I have been using these structures to deliver messages that question capitalism, unsustainable economy and other social issues. Today we hit Market Street with a few sentences that confront the local corporative power..."

The publisher of the Bay Guardian, Marke Bieschke responded: Hi Paz and everyone involved in this important action: I'm Marke B, the publisher of the Bay Guardian. Although this contest did not originate with us, we were very concerned with the lack of payment for the artists, especially since our mission is to support local artists (as evidenced by our annual GOLDIE Awards and weekly coverage).

I approached SF Media Co. management about it. We will be offering $200 cash plus $50 materials stipend. There will also be a larger prize for the person with the most creative entry, TBD. It turns SF Media Co had always intended to offer prizes, but had not secured a sponsor yet.

There was no malice intended towards participating artists -- the company has always been highly supportive of the arts, in my opinion. SF Media Co. is far from 1% -- it consists of free, community-oriented newspapers that rely completely on advertising. I wish we could pay the contest winners (and all artists) more.

Our deep apologies for any miscommunication.
