ANDERSON PITCHES JERSEY TO TITLE

There were times when manager Linda Lensch wondered if the New Jersey Divas would ever reach elite level status.

Not that all the yesterdays of the women's fastpitch team were really that dreadful. They were good, in fact, with the Divas usually good enough to fare well in local and state tournaments. Yet when they traveled to national tournaments, the Divas typically returned with bruised egos and an 0-2 record.

Because they were competing in national tournaments, Lensch slowly began attracting quality players from schools like Rutgers, Seton Hall and Maryland. The wins piled up, but the Divas fortunes didn't officially change until a pitcher from tiny Georgian Court College decided to become a Diva.

Lauren Anderson, the kickstand of the Divas' five-year-old program, won a pair of games over KAM/Hooters on Sunday including a no-hitter in the first game to propel New Jersey to the Amateur Softball Association Women's 23-Under Fast Pitch National Championship. Waving opponents to the side with the same sweeping motion reserved for picnic gnats, the Divas finished with a perfect 7-0 record in the four-day tournament held at the Audubon Recreation Center in Amherst.

In winning their first national championship, the Divas defeated three local teams along the way -- the Amherst Lightning Red and White teams and the Buffalo Bisons -- before tucking away the Michigan-based KAM/Hooters, the defending tournament champion, on Sunday. In the first game, Anderson was an error away from tossing a perfect game and settled for a 3-0 win.

"It was just a good game with lots of strikes," Anderson said. "I had a lot of movement with my ball and they weren't even coming close to touching it at that point. It's a good feeling.

She was just as dominant in the title game when she struck out 10 in the Divas' 5-1 victory.

"It's great to finally get to this level, the national level," Lensch said. "The first few years we had the organization it was rough but we started attracting better players and -- with the sponsorship we had -- it made it easier. We've just gotten better every year."

It all started when Anderson, who grew up around the game, joined the Divas last year.

An all-stater in high school Anderson was good enough to attend a Division I school but elected to go to Division II Georgian Court because her father, Gary, was the pitching coach until he died two years ago.

In 2003 at Georgian Court, a liberal arts school in Lakewood, N.J., Anderson earned All-America honors after winning 19 games with 194 strikeouts in 169.1 innings and a 1.03 ERA. Pitching back-to-back games has become routine for Anderson. She also pitched once on Saturday when the Divas had three games -- at 8 a.m., 2:15 p.m., and 6:15 p.m. -- a scenario which didn't make the Divas happy considering they were in the No. 2 seed.

"We had practice with it last weekend (in Allentown, Pa.) when we had a draw like that with the games really spread out," said Diva outfielder Brooke Maslo, who graduated from Maryland. "It really drains you but I guess we're kind of used to it and that's what we're here for.

"When we came in third last week, we were just a little bit tired and this time we just picked up the intensity because it's a national tournament and we just really wanted it. Everyone put so much effort into winning our first national championship."
