At the last moment I decided to make a costume. So, I built this in about three hours before I went out on Friday.
Done. Gets the point across.

The latest project arrived from Karakuri Corner. This one is a rather nice crystal radio set. It features beautiful diamond weave coils, a cat's whisker, a diode and two mineral samples to act as detectors, and even small amplifier so you can use the radio without a super long antenna.
Finished and ready to receive.
Back in 2000, in another life when I lived in a house and had space, I set up a quick and dirty haunted laboratory for the local kids that came around to trick or treat. I had lots of black lights, party gels (the red lights), green glow sticks, dry ice, a Jacobs ladder (15KV at 30mA), and my home brew Tesla coil (output about 50KV). The kids loved it! I had a ball firing up the Tesla coil on the un suspecting kids. The spark gap on that monster is LOUD! I was the only house in my neighborhood that did any thing close to this and my attempt was pretty half assed. I'll say this, once I get another home I'm pulling out the stops and doing this again.
Sweet closeup of the arc off the ladder. Timed exposure w/ flash. I love the smell of plasma in the evening.
Otona No Kagaku, or 'Science for Adults' is a 'mook' series published by Gakken in Japan. Each issue has includes a kit that goes along with whatever the issues topic is. This one deals with heat engines and comes with a low temperature Stirling engine. The entire project took me about an hour to put together and it quite satisfying once you see it chugging away over a cup of hot water.
The disk spins at quite a nice clip.

Me with all the gear. The lab is officially open.
