De Tunnel van Veurs heeft een lengte 2072 meter en maakt deel uit van lijn 24, die in de eerste wereld oorlog werd aangelegd door de Duitse bezetter.
De tunnel bestaat uit twee tunnelbuizen die op 18 meter van elkaar liggen en is in 6 maanden tijd aangelegd met een inzet van ruim 12.000 man, waaronder 8000 Belgische arbeiders en 2000 Russische krijgsgevangenen. Pas in december 1917 werd de tunnel in gebruik genomen.
De oorspronkelijke lengte van de tunnel bedroeg 2130 m. Op 10 mei 1940 werd de ingang van de tunnel door het Belgisch leger opgeblazen; sindsdien is hij bijna 50 m korter.
Dankzij een dienst op enkelspoor iets verderop was het file op L24 en moest er meer dan een half uur gewacht worden... Tijd genoeg dus om eens een foto te maken in de "Konijnenpijp"

After a short, but technical hike we were spoiled enough to have Abiqua Falls to ourselves. The rush and sound of Earth’s power visualized in physical form serves a reminder of how minuscule we truly are. Small as we are, we’ve taken this planet for granted. Earth is a living entity which must be respected. It’s scary to think that in the future, views like this may not exist. As the only animal responsible for this destruction, I am ashamed.

Op 15 februari zou de verblijfstrein (C75) van Infrabel weer opgehaald worden in Ans, er werd die dag ook mooi weer voorspeld en dus was er reden genoeg om wat foto's te gaan maken. Of nee wacht...... Ik had zelf een dienst en moest dit aan mij laten voorbij gaan, jammerlijk was ik dan ook op weg naar Antwerpen om zelf een trein te rijden. Tot het verlossende telefoontje kwam van de planner met de vraag "zou jij eventueel een andere trein kunnen rijden op een later tijdstip vandaag?" Nou ja, daar moest ik geen 2 keer over nadenken!
Er werd dan ook zo snel als mogelijk vanuit Antwerpen met de auto naar lijn 124 gereden, helaas kwam er wel steeds meer hoge bewolking.... De verblijfstrein was ondertussen ook al aan het rijden en een bepaalde fotoplek had ik niet in gedachten, dus het was een pure gok! Bij Lillois vond ik gelukkig deze "redelijke" plek en het duurde na aankomst dan ook geen 5 minuten of de brullende GM motoren van de 5506 en 6246 in treinschakeling kondigde zich aan. Van geluk gesproken!
Bedankt ook aan Finn en Quentin! Niets zo mooi als mensen die gepassioneerd zijn door hun job ;-)

Eastern Coral Snake- Micrurus fulvius

My first snake of 2016 was this absolutely gorgeous Eastern Coral Snake. Incredibly beautiful, and incredibly deadly. The most venomous snake in the US, but also one of the most shy and docile. I'm still amazed I actually managed to find one

The view from above timberline on Pikes Peak. I've never seen clouds or light like this... Pine trees poke through the wispy clouds that flood the valley's fingers. Each tree, fighting to see the first bit of light scraping past the ridges.
Light pollution from the Eisenhower Tunnel casts an orange glow on the surrounding clouds and mountains. This is just one of the many ways we’ve irreversibly altered our planet’s landscape.

There are a lot of things I don't like about this shot but its a momma Timber cooking up babies at a birthing site so its worth sharing. Hopefully the new generation will be born healthy in the fall :)

26 oktober is de nationale feestdag van Oostenrijk dus moest er vandaag toch een foto gepost worden van dit mooie land.
Op bovenstaande foto zien we 115 jaar oude locomotieven 1099.14 en 1099.11 die met een fototrein onderweg zijn op de Mariazellerbahn richting Winterbach. Ter hoogte van het Saugrabenviaduct kon deze foto gemaakt worden.

Op 29 januari reed RTB CARGO BELGIUM NV de allereerste commerciële rit met een Euro 9000 in België. De rit ging vanuit Aachen-West naar Zeebrugge-Ramskapelle. In de tunnel van Veurs was er even tijd wegens dienst op enkel spoor en daar werd dankbaar gebruik van gemaakt om snel een foto te maken van dit krachtpatser.

There was just the right amount of sunlight scraping across the tops of this grove of aspen trees to bring out their golden hue. Gap light is rare, but if you can catch it at the right moment you get an ethereal quality to landscapes.
Dit keer werd er eens gekozen voor het maken van een "Panning shot" in Zichem.
De bedoeling hierbij is om een bewegend onderwerp scherp op de foto te zetten en de achtergrond juist niet scherp te hebben. Dankzij dit effect wordt de snelheid zichtbaar op de foto.
Als figurant werd gekozen voor de losse 6285 van Infrabel die hier onderweg was van Lier naar Hasselt.

Last Friday I lost my job of four years... I thought it would make me feel stressed and worried about the future, but given the unhealthy work environment that I had put up with for so long, I feel almost nothing but relief. I knew that my relationship with this company was coming to an end for a while now and frankly I wish I would've summoned the courage to leave a long time ago, but the money was the best I had ever made so I forced myself to try and stick it out for as long as I could. I'm uncertain of my future at this time but sometimes I think it's better for us as individuals for things to feel uncertain than to always feel comfortable. We do not change or grow when we're comfortable. We do not learn about the world or our own capabilities and strengths when we're always comfortable and for that I'm thankful to be moving on to something I know will be better for me professionally but also healthier for me mentally. And my advice for anyone else who might be going through something similar or maybe will face something similar in the future is to bet on yourself, take a leap of faith, and pursue what makes YOU happy in this beautiful world. Life is far too short to put up with any sort of unhappiness.
