My students studied the colonial times and learned about charters. I had my students write out their own class charter using real quills and ink on parchment paper I prepared for them. They had such a blast writing them!
Materials for board:
-pre-cut letters
- quilted stars border
- egg yolk fabric
- quills (template was printed on tan construction paper/ real quills for writing - Michaels)
- parchment paper (coffee-stained copy paper)
- ink (made from Ritz dye, hot water, and salt)
This student is preparing for her Grade 6 piano exam. She needed a helping hand in organizing her practises a bit more effectively. I said that at her level, if she just runs through everything, every day, she's just maintaining her current level. Nothing is getting better.
But if she splits her Task List and spends more time on each task, then she should hear some steady progress.
This year, my students and I have been exploring the music of Jennifer Ecklund. This 13 year-old really took a liking to "No Limits", learning the "Revving Up" version in one week. He is performing the "Full Speed Ahead" version at a local music festival. Featured here is our choreography ideas for the finish.
When my student told me that he had never s̶e̶e̶n̶ noticed an arabesque before, I promptly searched for a sample to help him learn this study.
You can combine Social Studies, research and reference, persuasive writing, and reading comprehension all in one!
Students were assigned a colony to research and must create appealing brochures showcasing the history, region, pastimes, and trade of that colony. I used some corkboard, pre-cut lettering, and construction paper to create the brochure display.
Inspired by Alessandra diCenzo in Ontario and Mr. Dressup, I collected various textures to help my students with articulation and expression.
My kids are reading short stories by Stephen King, so I set a display in the classroom with their work.
Want your students to learn about an author? Have students research an author and have them serve their biography on a plate (this one's on Stephen King). All you need are paper plates!
Pinwheels are fun but also educational! This idea can be used for any subject. Just find a pinwheel template, cut out the squares, and then have students write about what they learned within each pinwheel section, you can also have them draw on the back. The pencils act as stems, and pushpins are used to gather the sleeves and are joined on the pencil's eraser.

One of my students needed a different way to count the beats in his music. He, the next student, and I came up with this: country names!

A nice way to end lessons with a student who terminated lessons early. His three fave songs, recorded and presented as a souvenir.
