Tchaikovsky - Variations on a Rococo Theme - Benjamin Britten and Mstislav Rostropovich.

"Wake up and sing, wake up and sing. Try it for once in your life..." The song, written for the play by Gennady Gladkov, became very popular in the 70s — after it was performed by Larisa Mondrus in the film "Gentlemen of Fortune" (1971).

The musical notes and the taste notes of the coffee formed a symphony.

The notes on the cup and saucer are real. If you play without mistakes, you will hear" The Song of the Lark "by Pyotr Tchaikovsky from the cycle "Seasons". The factory that made the dishes took special permission from the Tchaikovsky house to use the sheet music.

Turkish coffee. I love Turkish coffee, medium roast, very finely ground. 4 teaspoons of coffee, 2 teaspoons of cane sugar and water. Cooked in copper cezve.

Taken early one morning on our recent road trip at Lakes Entrance. These 2 swans were preening themselves and I have to wait for the right moment when both lifted their heads up. You could still see the down feathers stuck in their beaks.

Tchaikovsky's excitement with Swan Lake is evident from the speed with which he composed: commissioned in the spring of 1875, the piece was created within one year.

My favourite painting in Manchester’s Art Gallery is: ‘Marshal Ney Supporting the Rear Guard during the Retreat from Moscow’ painted in 1856 by artist Adolphe Yvon 1817-1893; ( Painting Pictured above).

Yvon’s painting represents the disastrous culmination of Napoleon’s Russian invasion of 1812.

Having led 450,000 men across the river Niemen Napoleon was forced to turn back to Moscow; which had been torched by retreating Russian forces.

The central figure in the picture is the French Hero ‘Marshal Michael Ney’ who was given command of the army’s rear guard, but temperatures below -20° C killed as many men as the enemy; by the December of that year only 13,000 of the Grand Army remained.

Historically, the French eventually occupied Moscow, and all seemed hopeless for the Russians until a legendary winter storm descended, defeating the French where they stood; can be seen in the picture.

One of the best known pieces of classical music composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1880 was the ‘1812 Overture’; its full title is ‘The Year 1812 Solemn Overture, op. 49’. It was meant to commemorate the successful Russian defence against Napoleon’s invading Grand Army in 1812; Represented in the painting by Yvon.

Tchaikovsky actually hated that piece of music as it was ‘too loud and noisy’, even though he wrote it.

Of the many productions of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker I have seen throughout the years, few are more visually striking than this one recently staged at the Rome Opera House.

In a theatrical design full of charming detail, seasonal coziness and fairytale magic, the Waltz of the Snowflakes stood out, and was, as always, pretty challenging to photograph.

The sets were created by Andrea Miglio, the costumes by Gianluca Falaschi, lighting by Valerio Tiberi and the video projections by Igor Renzetti and Lorenzo Bruno. The overall production and choreography is by Paul Chalmer.

Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" ballet performed by New York Theatre Ballet at Brookfield Place

Pyotr (Peter) Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 — 1893), was a Russian composer of the Romantic era. Tchaikovsky is one of the world's most renowned classical music composers, known for his distinctly Russian character as well as for his rich harmonies and stirring melodies.

His talent was perhaps too heterogeneous and his stylistic skills overly versatile, which spurred complaints that his music was either too Russian or too European, while it was effectively both; he integrated Russian folk melodies with Western European melodies. Tchaikovsky's name is most frequently associated with Swan Lake, Nutcracker, and Capriccio Italien.

His personal life was troubled. Tchaikovsky was evidently a homosexual, who consented to marry an ardent admirer and student largely to satisfy societal conventions; the marriage did not survive a month. The only woman he built a strong relationship with was his benefactress, Nadezhda von Meck, who admired and subsidized him for years, though the two never physically met.

The composer's lifestyle added to the turbulence and melancholia that was reflected in his works. Tchaikovsky was not simply tormented, but also deeply in touch with beauty and deep emotion. He gave himself to his art and placed it above the twists and turns of his own existence. By continually prompting his audiences to stretch their likings beyond the familiar and easily acceptable, he provided a glimpse of the stage that had not yet been opened—when individuals could go beyond their nationalistic tendencies to embrace the world. His musical rendering of this 'premature' vision Tchaikovsky died in 1893 during the cholera epidemic. His death has conventionally been attributed to cholera, although some recent theories suggest the possibly of suicide through arsenic poisoning. Though a brilliant composer, his life was riddled with sadness.
