If we're honest with ourselves... then it all comes down to chance.

And I guess life is about grabbing those chances when they come around.

It’s not the safe choices that etch themselves into memory - it’s the moments where the ground gave way beneath you, and you jumped anyway. When you stepped beyond the edge of certainty and let instinct lead the way, heart thundering, breath held, unsure of what waited below.
Those are the moments that return in quiet reverie, that glint sharp in the mind’s archive: a reckless laugh, a held hand, the sound of water just before impact. You don’t remember the carefully measured steps; you remember the leap—the feeling of being alive in the space between letting go and becoming.

one decision can change your whole life. and if youre unhappy, dont let it scare you. you will find the shore eventually.
this photo has this whole backstory in my head... and not that it particularly matters because i love individual interpretation in art, but i intended to tell the story of two rich and beautiful ladies, with lovers and nice homes to be proud of. though still they were unhappy, so one day whilst cruising the ocean on a yacht they made a pact and jumped ship.. this is the moment they finally washed up, hearts full of hope and courage. even after the beginnings of a rough journey.
and this is one of my favorite pieces that ive made for a while.

oh yea and thank you sierra for the oh so sweet testimonial. gotta tell ya flickrites, its a lot easier to keep on going with all of you around.
I made - and then manipulated - this shot nearly ten years ago, but resisted posting to Flickr because it generally doesn't fit with the body of work here. Most of my work is in focus, with attention paid to detail. Not much detail to be found here!
I think this image is closer to cave paintings than 21st Century photography. Well... that was my intent. For the next week or so I'm going to be posting shots that break the mold, crack the cosmic egg, fly in the face of everything I used to teach when I taught nature and wildlife photography. They'll either work for you or they won't.
I knew that with each of these attempts I was risking failure, and that to fail is a good thing. If we don't shoot a lot of really bad stuff, we probably aren't trying hard enough to push through and past our limitations. When I used to teach photography, sometimes I would insist on seeing bad photos from my students. This was a way of getting them more deeply into process without worrying about trying to be perfect; seeing comes before technique. Let's see what you can see today! And because I always (or usually) take my own advice... here are some results that I do like from all of my shoving and thrashing inside the box over the years. Gathered together so they won't seem out of place. Early in the new year I'll return to my wildlife ways. Promise. For now, a little fun.
Photographed near Val Marie, Saskatchewan (Canada) with a slow shutter to intentionally blur my subject, then heavily manipulated in Photoshop. Don't use this image on websites, blogs, or other media without explicit permission © 2009 James R. Page - all rights reserved.
This one's for Beverley. Recently we were discussing the need to step outside the box and take risks - that is, risk taking some bad photos. In fact, I used to tell my workshop students to take bad photos, to risk failure, rather than staying in safe territory. That's how we make discoveries; that's how we surprise ourselves.
I remembered this on a walk in the park. The usual breeze was evident, pushing and tugging at the grasses and flowers. I set the tripod up at the edge of a prairie coulee, locked it down tight, set the ISO speed as low as it would go, stopped down the lens, and shot a waist-high patch of Yellow Sweet Clover with a slow shutter, trying different exposures, waiting for a gust, then waiting for the gust to taper off.
Most were throwaways, but I like this. It may seem odd, after a lifetime of trying to master the technical details, to willingly create a situation where details cannot be controlled, but it's really satisfying to throw caution to the wind and come home with a keeper.

THANKS TO THE POWER OF INTROSPECTION
It is a hard descend to the Ursa's Beach (Praia da Ursa) and an even
harder climb to get out from it. But in the end of the day, everyone
had a big smile, from visiting one of the most beautiful beaches in
Portugal.
This beach is just north of the "Cabo da Roca" the most western point
in the european continent. It is a small but almost mystica beach.
Since it has a dificult access nudism is a frequent practice.

For this shot I placed myself behind this rock and waited for the wave to hit it. I made a couple of shots, but it was a bit triky since I had to run backwards just after I took each shot to prevent getting wet.
To obtaine this effect I needed to do a mild tone mapping tone mapping using the open source software Qtpfsgui. The algorithm used was: Drago

This morning me and some of my flickr friends went for an early morning photographic session in Portinho d'Arrábida near Setúbal. I had a wonderful time and got the change to finally meet Kerstine, her photostream is a really source of inspiration (see it here: Kerstine.

I went out at lunch time for an iced coffee and saw this black wall on my way. I wore the dress today actually hoping to find one for the ODC theme for today. It's a sunny day today with nice puffy clouds and at first my shots were all blown because the sun was so harsh. I was just ready to pack everything up and try something else later, when the sun went behind a cloud. I was able to snap a few more that I didn't feel like I had to trash. Sweet serendipity! I wanted to get this done and posted because I go to my second job tonight when I leave this one. Maybe I'll stop for another iced coffee on the way! I've got a busy weekend, I'm taking three of the kids to see the Batman movie tomorrow at the IMAX theater and then going to see a concert in the city in the evening. More busyness on Sunday! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and that you make some time to do something that you love to do!

Our house is set up perfectly, with windows facing in exactly the right directions for the most wonderful light play and resulting shadows, both in the morning, and in the later afternoon.
I set my camera up on a tripod, opened the venetian blinds just a bit more, and did a little shadow work...
Tough composition, when you can't see what you are doing.
Sort of like life, actually . . .
We have a vague notion of where we are going, what we are reaching for, and getting ourselves into . . . all without ever being able to see the real picture. And the possible outcome . . .
But . . .
"And I know I've got something inside me,
There's always a light there to guide me,
To what can't be found..."
(Words from "This Old House" by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.)

As I created this image I had a specific feel in mind but not sure how I was going to achieve it.I wanted some sort of Dorothy shot for the 'collection' but didn't want to have the stereotypical depiction...I knew hair needed to be a huge part of the shot as it is what always struck me about her when I think of the movie..But short of putting braids and ribbons in(NOT) I needed a way to portray her..So I went with a half and half..one for the B & W Dorothy in Kansas and one for the Dorothy in color in Oz...Plus I always felt she'd do a bit better along her travels with bigger breasts..so..here ya go...I relate so well to this character most often these days..as I feel stuck between two worlds a lot..I am a mother but the kids are old enough and I still young enough to have my own life again..I am a wife (albeit not for long) but..I struggle very much in that role and being able to do what I want and love who I want and mostly when I want! There's always the battle between angel and devil/good and bad...right and wrong..responsible vs. total screw off...So here is where the rub is for me..everything is always at a hurry up and slow down pace which keeps me in limbo..hell..purgatory...and I want to push through..push higher..I want to be taken higher..just somewhere..anywhere but where I am now..so before I get the grass is greener speech..save it..you do not live in my backyard!

When dreaming I'm guided through another world
Time and time again
At sunrise I fight to stay asleep
'Cause I don't want to leave the comfort of this place
'Cause there's a hunger, a longing to escape
From the life I live when I'm awake
So let's go there
Let's make our escape
Come on, let's go there
Let's ask can we stay?
Can you take me higher?
To the place where blind men see
Can you take me higher?
To the place with golden streets
Although I would like our world to change
It helps me to appreciate
Those nights and those dreams
But, my friend, I'd sacrifice all those nights
If I could make the Earth and my dreams the same
The only difference is
To let love replace all our hate
So let's go there
Let's make our escape
Come on, let's go there
Let's ask can we stay?
Up high I feel like I'm alive for the very first time
Up high I'm strong enough to take these dreams
And make them mine

#17 Freedom
Every Memorial Day gives us the chance to honor those who died while serving our country. Unfortunately, the cost of freedom is high - how do you put a price on the right to act, speak, think as a personal choice without retribution or restraint? If you haven't seen the HBO movie, Taking Chance, please invest time in doing so. Although more contemporary than the Memorial Day origins of the Civil War, it reminds us of the need to make memorialization a part of our daily lives rather than just an annual event.
Our nation today is dangerously close to losing true freedom - not in a typical war, but rather as a result of domestic words and actions. We all need to do our honorable service to be sure freedom remains a core value for all. Naples, FL

My beautiful daughter trying to carefully step from one rock to another. She didn't time it so well and almost fell in. This one made me laugh because it is so honest, true, and candid. I am glad she didnt fall, but her expression makes me giggle.
