On Tuesday evening I drove off to the pool and when I returned, I spotted something odd on the street where I park but didn't think much of it and before I knew it my tire crushed whatever it was. Turned out it was the clear lens (backup light) of the buggys left rear lens assembly. It was now in 100 pieces well beyond repair.

If there is one thing I can't stand it is missing lenses - it really gives a car the jalopy feel. Mainly, of course, it leaves the bulb and wires exposed to rain leading to malfunction and a more costly repair beyond my capabilities. Also, the taillight assemblies were old, cracked, faded and I've been wanting to replace them for a while now so here I had my excuse.

Well, the price of these from Volvo (OEM) run around $ 200 for EACH side. I then remembered why I hadn't replaced them yet. Looked for an aftermarket solution and found it at lampsandlenses.com, for $ 37.99 each. Doable. Ordered them on Wednesday, they arrived on Friday (wow!) and were installed the next day. By me. As in myself. I am mechanically challenged so I am surprised this went off without a hitch, and everything works as it should.

Aftermarket lens assemblies receive mixed reviews - they are prone to leak or melt or are ill-fitting. For some reason the wagon taillights are supposed to work better than the sedan ones - some folks had them installed for several years with no problem. We'll see. For the price, it's worth a try.

Now, if only I had the funds for a front makeover...head lights.
