Cave Racer - Orthriophis taeniurus

Hanging out underground with a cave racer snake at Mulu National Park on the island of Borneo.

I was told the best way to find one of these cool snakes was to join a tour into one of Mulu's awesome caves (specifically called "The Racer Cave". We found this guy after about half an hour's descent inside.

And while I have seen these snakes in other locations in Thailand, the coolest thing about finding this one (other than being underground) was that it was sat close to where I would expect it to be hunting for bats, which is what these snakes as well known for doing.

The photo shows the snake's in-situ position, which was high on the wall, just off a door-like opening. This position would be ideal for catching the resident bats as they are forced to fly through the smallish opening that formed the doorway between the rocks.

Sadly, the group who was with me in the cave were not as big fans of snakes as I am and when I suggested we wait around for hours if anything would happen, it was met with a resounding no.

Orthriophis Taeniurus Rat Snake ]

Driving up the mountain to begin searching for snakes, this beauty snake (Orthriophis taeniurus friesi) crossed the road into the drainage ditch. As a bonus, when we jumped out to see what it was, we found a tiny blind snake (Ramphotyphlops braminus) in there next to it.
