From Nice to Lyon with a stop at Avignon day 9 of our Cosmos tour, October 8, 2012. Palace of the Popes in Avignon and we got our first bit of rain of the tour.
The Palais des Papes (lo Palais dei Papas in Occitan) is a historical palace in Avignon, southern France, one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. One time fortress and palace, the papal residence was the seat of Western Christianity during the 14th century. Six papal conclaves were held in the Palais, leading to the elections of Benedict XII in 1334, Clement VI in 1342, Innocent VI in 1352, Urban V in 1362, Gregory XI in 1370 and Antipope Benedict XIII in 1394.
The Palais is actually made up of two buildings: the old Palais of Benedict XII which sits on the impregnable rock of Doms, and the new Palais of Clement VI, the most extravagant of the Avignon popes. Not only is the final combination the largest Gothic building of the Middle Ages, it is also one of the best examples of the International Gothic architectural style. The construction design was the work of two of France’s best architects, Pierre Peysson and Jean du Louvres and the lavish ornamentation the work of two of the best students of the School of Siena (Italy), Simone Martini and Matteo Giovanetti.
In addition, the papal library housed in the Palais (the largest in Europe at the time with over 2,000 volumes), attracted a group of clerics passionate in the study of "belle-lettres", amongst the future founder of Humanism, Petrarch. At the same time, composers, singers and musicians were drawn to the Great Chapel of the Palais. It was there that Clement VI appreciated the Mass of Notre-Dame de Guillaume de Machault, there that Philippe de Vitry at the pope’s invitation presented his Ars Nova and there that Johannes Ciconia came to study.
Due to its immense size, the Palais was also the place where the general organisation of the Church began to change. It facilitated the centralisation of services and the adaption of operations in order to suit the needs of the papacy, creating a truly central administration for the Church. The strength of the Curia (Church administration), 200 at the end of the 13th century, surpassed 300 at the beginning of the 14th century and reached 500 people in 1316. To this was added over a thousand lay officials working within the Palais.
Despite all its achievements, the Palais became obsolete when the papacy found it necessary to return to Rome. The hope of reuniting Latin and Orthodox Christians, along with the achievement of peace in the Papal States in Italy, made the case of returning ever stronger. Added to that were the convictions of Urban V and Gregory XI that the seat of the papacy could not be anyway but the tomb of St Peter. In the face of strong opposition from the Court of France and the College of Cardinals, both popes found the means to return to Rome, the first, on 30th April 1362, the second on 13th September 1370. This time, the return was absolute.
In the following centuries, the Palais lost all its former glory, despite it serving as the seat of two anti-popes and many cardinals. It retained however, a “work of destruction” aspect that French poets and writers have referred to over the centuries, with its powerful sense beauty, simplicity, grandeur and immortality.
Since 1995, the palais des Papes has been classified along with the historic center of Avignon, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, under cultural criteria i, ii and iv.

We have two tablets here. The Queen and Prince Philip, who are both avid fans paid a visit in 1982. Then to celebrate Corries 40th Anniverary, Prince Charles. they didn't put a tablet up for my visit.. Ho well!
Just received package today Sat. the 4th. Acquired it on Ebay from my Getty payment this month. Was $48.35 shipped.

Okay i finally revealled i have a tablet. But i rarely use it. I bought it a while back so i could sign documents and such. Then i realised people were using it to enhance their pictures. Me personally I don't really like to use it because i am an old school simmer who likes the rawness of frankensteining and things looking sim like instead of a sometimes smudgy mess. This is only minorly tabletted ... but still this is the reason i dont like to use it. It doesnt look natural to me... IMO!

I was fooling around with a sketching app on Laura's Acer tablet. Nice machine, I could see myself using this as a sketchbook, but only once it comes down to <$500. And the battery life gets up in the 15-20 hour range. I think I have to wait 3-5 years at most.

We got our first tablet yesterday. It's an Acer Iconia A500. It's pretty cool, but frustrating because I keep wanting to do computer functions like 'right clicking' etc. There is a learning curve and I am an old dog so it will take some time to learn this "new trick". My wife got the case with the built in keyboard. We considered an I Pad...... but thought that once we crossed that line we would want to go all Apple:-)) Hope everyone is having a wonderful week!
This is a photograph from the 5th annual Craughwell 10 Mile Road Race which took place in Craughwell Village, Co. Galway, Ireland on Sunday 23rd March 2014 at 13:00. The 'Craughwell 10' has grown quickly to become not just one of Connaught's best known and attended road races but one of Ireland's best road races. Rather uniquely for road races in Ireland today the Craughwell 10 Mile road race offers a fully traffic free route for participants. The fast primarily flat course brings participants on the network of rural country roads to the west of Craughwell village. This year's event attracted a record number of over 650 participants building on the 600+ finishers from last year's race (results available below).

The organisation team of Craughwell AC and a huge team of volunteers from the local community deserve great praise and congratulations on the excellent work that they put into making the Craughwell 10 such an outstanding success. A race of this size is a mammoth undertaking and it's flawless organisation is a tribute to the volunteer work behind the scenes.
Route Description
The race starts in Craughwell Village and then heads west on country roads. The route takes a right turn after 1KM and heads north towards Caheradine. The route then takes a left and heads west again towards the N18. After 4 miles the race takes another left (goo.gl/maps/khTi4) heading south. Just before 6 miles another left turn brings the race back towards Craughwell village. This leaves the runners with a straight run to the finish area from here and the finish in the Primary School. There was a stiff cold breeze at different parts of the course but for the most part there was good stretches of tail winds also. There were water stations at two points in the course.
The AAI County Galway 10 mile Road Race Championships took place in conjunction with the race today which ensured that there was great competition amongst Co. Galway based clubs at all categories.
The spread of refreshments after the race was incredible. Every taste was catered for. The organisers were thoughtful enough to include a wide range of gluten free goodies for participants after the race.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase.
