Washing on the lines of a commercial laundry in Fort Kochi. The Dhobi Khana laundry is akin to a co-operative, where washermen and women rent a tub and bay to fulfill laundry contracts they each have. There is not a clothes-peg in sight in this vast outdoor drying area. All items are neatly captured in the twists of the coir rope clothes-lines.

Well, I stayed away from any computers for a large part of the Christmas period, but I did take some photos. This image is based on a photo I took in a restaurant in Naleczow, Poland, of a table and tablemats dating from the 1970s.

The restaurant is Ewelina, and although some of the snobby nouveau riche in Poland ignore it because it has not been renovated to a high level, it manages a certain shabby chic that is appreciated by many locals and the rather aging middle classes who enjoy remembering the old days. Yes, there is a certain amount of clinking of soup spoons and hushed conversation, and overly romantic art for sale on its walls, but we go back again and again because the service is good and the cakes (and soup) excellent.

So, here is my Ode to Ewelina!

Table Mats in Prague (78)

Texas Monthly rated the Hamburger Store as having the 36th best burger in Texas. We passed by on the way to Arkansas (OK, I convinced the group to take the long way there), so we stopped and had a burger.

I had the bacon cheeseburger with jalapenos. I was asked afterwards by my tablemates what I thought of it, since they knew I have a thang for burgers. I said it was an A-.

The salad was fresh, as you can see. The bun was solid and tasted OK… nothing special. The bacon was nicely thick, and cooked well. But I wasn't overly impressed for some reason.

It all boiled down to the meat. It had a good, burger flavor but it lacked any ooze. It didn't seem over cooked, but the mouth just wasn't there. I didn't get that delight I feel when the meat moistens my tongue and caresses my tastebuds. Part of the experience of eating a superb burger is the ooze it brings, and this was dry. Not offensively so, but dry nonetheless.

I have purposely not dinged the burger on account of the fries. I said earlier that the fries were a disappointment. They were. Bagged, frozen, cooked once. No way they were the best in Texas. They probably weren’t the best in Jefferson.

I guess I still rate the burger as an A- or maybe a B+. If you include the fries, I can't see the meal rising above a B.

I am still mystified why Texas Monthly gave out the ratings that they did. I reckon they must have sent their Austin-based staff out to sample burgers, and Austin is not the same as anywhere else in Texas. It would be like sending out Wall Streeters to sample the pasties in the U.P.—they just wouldn't get it.

Rainy weekend monopoly match in a coffee shop.

I shot this facing forward with the Hassy lens facing behind me and focused. Maybe I need to keep trying weird things in order for me to actually get my focus right... seems to work. :)

I decided to use some of my blocks in a tablemat

Day 15/366

This is not just a Ghastlie table mat "work in progress"...it is literally a ghasty work in progress. I do hope I finish it one of these days as the most tedious work is complete. But I have to set it aside for projects that need completing before December 25th.

Found these vintage doilies at a thrift shop. They weren't all quite finished so I did the job and put them together as a table mat. I was particularly attracted by the colours because I am sure I would not have chosen them myself. And I love them! They make me smile every time I come into the room!

These coiled mats are made from scraps of fabric wrapped around a cord. This is a series I made with different bright colours of the rainbow.

Eugenia wearing table gifts from the Convention. Thank you my tablemates from table 15!!!

Made from a vintage table mat.

But then I bought some local batting which turned out to be quite stretchy and which I only realized after I had started to handquilt along the lines of the green leaves. The stretchy batting and the thin vintage fabric forced me to change my plans so I turned it into a table topper. And I'm just as happy with it!

I love the light coming in the bedroom window in the evenings at this time of year.
