new small table mats found at thrift shop. I like the orla kiely-esque pattern and colours. Unfortunately there were only three in the box...
Our tablemates were taking a picture of us. I think one of my parents took this, although that's not their beer in the bottom of the frame...
Bone Marrow Pho
------------------------
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Đi Ăn, a Vietnamese restaurant offering great tasting dishes, not too far from where I lived in Scarborough.
We started with a few appetizers, including Crispy Netted Rolls, Combo Spring Rolls & Fresh Rolls,
Golden Chicken Wings, and Rib Eye Salad. They were all good, with the wings and rib eye salad being my favourites.
Our next dish was the DIY Rice Roll with Duo Beef Delight Hot Pot. This had several components, which required us to cook the meet in a broth and assemble our own rice rolls. It was fun but we all struggled with making it look pretty but it certainly tasted good!
My tablemates all had the Bone Marrow Pho and it looked great! It was a huge serving, with a big bone, and they all ended up taking home some of it.
I chose to be different and had the Hoi An Chicken Rice. It was really good but I should have taken home half of it. I was so stuffed!
I also opted for the Vietnamese Iced Coffee, which was quite good but it kept me awake until the wee hours of the morning!

PERSONAL FUN FACT written by my sister: Some dolls you seek out, others are just there. I love this girl, who Shelly named Wendy, with her blondish looking hair and green eyes. She doesn't look like any of our other Cabbies. However, she was sort of a find of opportunity. There are times, when one is just discovering an obsession, that one is not very selective and will just buy the first dolls of a certain kind that one encounters while thrifting. Case in point--Wendy, Anna Teresa, Daniel Joseph, and Dennis Paul. The seller had these four CPK dolls for a WHILE, probably for over a year. For some reason, summer 2021 was when we decided to buy Cabbage Patch dolls. Not sure why. It was always a thought that lurked somewhere in the recesses of Shelly's dolly obsessed brain. How do I know what lurks in my sister's mind? Am I telepathic? Not exactly--but we've always been weirdly in tune with one another. Without her saying, "I think I want to collect Cabbage Patch dolls some day," I knew she was thinking it just from little remarks. Remarks that seemed completely unrelated, like "This girl I watch craft on youtube has a lot of Cabbage Patch dolls." Subtle hints that someone else may not have correctly interpreted. She remembers seeing this seller's CPKs in 2020, because she was intrigued. However, when a mental tangent connecting Wellie Wishers to Twist 'n Style Tiffany to Cabbage Patch shortly preceded documenting a CPK crib we've always had during routine photography, it led to a Cabbage Patch boom. Unlike the LOL boom of 2020, it's not like you can walk into Walmart, so, we were left with mostly online shopping, but wanted an opportunity to buy them in the wild. I didn't expect to be swept away by CPK insanity--I knew Shelly would be. I knew, "I'm going to buy a book about them" really meant, "I'll have a collection started before the book comes in the mail." And, "I just want a couple" really meant, "I'm going to have a crapload by the end of the summer." It was my own reaction that surprised me--swept away by Cabbie fever. If anything, I was probably more persistent about buying Dennis Paul's...siblings? roommates? seller's tablemates? friends? comrades? Whatever you call them, I was more persistent about acquiring them than Shelly by the end. When we first found the "Cabbie Guy," we gravitated toward the two boy dolls, even though we had fewer girls. That's why Dennis Paul came home first (Daniel looks a lot like a few of our other fellas). But I was really curious about the girls. Wendy certainly, as I said previously, stands out in our not-so-small small CPK collection because the others are either bald or brunette. (Francisca is our only bald girl...but she's basically Baby Martin in drag.) Even though Wendy's hair was different, we both liked Anna Teresa more because of the teeth. So, when we planned on (more like "pretended") buying only one other on a rainy September day in 2021, we picked Anna. However, the other two dolls nagged at me. I wanted a blonde girl to name after Mom (whose name was not "Wendy") and Daniel was in the coveted mouse sleeper and, let's face it, I sort of fell in love with him before we even bought Dennis Paul. (I scoped them out one week, but we didn't buy any.) So, using the "rainy day discount"--$15 instead of $25--as an excuse, we doubled back after buying Anna and looking around at other tables. The seller has a good sense of humor. He said something about, "You're back for another one?" and I said, "We're taking both, keeping them together." He said it was a "happy ending" and that the Cabbies were "loving the rain." When we came back the next day, Labor Day, he passed by us and asked if the dolls were with us. I said they were at home, but they were clean and that we really loved them. Because Mom had blue eyes and this girl had green, we are still saving Mom's name for the right girl. Shelly picked "Wendy" because she reminds her of the Wendy from Peter Pan--tanish hair. Wendy is really cute. She is a blast to dress because of her green eyes. I'll admit--all the girls are a pleasure to dress. There is just a wider range of fashion options for female dolls. In fact, we even had better luck buying clothes for the girls when looking at real preemie clothes. Having another model for our fun clothes is very exciting. Also, I'm glad the Coleco Cabbies the seller had stayed together. I strongly suspect that all four were from the same original home. I think they liked Wendy a lot because she was wearing a handmade nightgown. (It reminds me of the real CPK nightie we have for Franny, but it's blue. So, I didn't realize she was in non-CPK clothes and was going to sponge off of us!) Dennis Paul was very pleased to see his brother and sisters again!
Thanks to Julie (julielou41) I made a Modern Hexies Runner. I had always thought that the hexies would be much to fiddly for me. But then Julie sent me a couple of ready made hexies in a swap and they were sooo pretty! At first I didn't know what to do with them and played with them on my work table until I realized I have to make some more. So I started off and was quite amazed at how much fun they were. Actually I had to force myself to stop because there were other projects that needed to be finished too. I am totally in love with my hexies runner and thank you Julie for starting me off. Without you I would probably never have made hexies! And these won't be my last that's for sure!
I blogged about this on www.turningturning.com.

Had dinner at my sister's place recently and this is the placemat she used. I estimate the photo was taken in the 1970s but can't be sure.
I'm back & you will see a lot more of me. This is one of the 1st few shots I have taken with my new canon DSLR. I hope i learn well & do the camera justice.

Probably my favourite King Penguin (so far). According to the booksellers note inside the jacket, this one is comparably rare because "many copies were destroyed to make tablemats"!
2023 February Photo Challenge
February 14 - 2 hearts (Can be 2 in one picture or 2 separate shots)
And all I needed was two hearts so I had to some romantic covering up.

Well, I stayed away from any computers for a large part of the Christmas period, but I did take some photos. This image is based on a photo I took in a restaurant in Naleczow, Poland, of a table and tablemats dating from the 1970s.
The restaurant is Ewelina, and although some of the snobby nouveau riche in Poland ignore it because it has not been renovated to a high level, it manages a certain shabby chic that is appreciated by many locals and the rather aging middle classes who enjoy remembering the old days. Yes, there is a certain amount of clinking of soup spoons and hushed conversation, and overly romantic art for sale on its walls, but we go back again and again because the service is good and the cakes (and soup) excellent.
So, here is my Ode to Ewelina!

Texas Monthly rated the Hamburger Store as having the 36th best burger in Texas. We passed by on the way to Arkansas (OK, I convinced the group to take the long way there), so we stopped and had a burger.
I had the bacon cheeseburger with jalapenos. I was asked afterwards by my tablemates what I thought of it, since they knew I have a thang for burgers. I said it was an A-.
The salad was fresh, as you can see. The bun was solid and tasted OK… nothing special. The bacon was nicely thick, and cooked well. But I wasn't overly impressed for some reason.
It all boiled down to the meat. It had a good, burger flavor but it lacked any ooze. It didn't seem over cooked, but the mouth just wasn't there. I didn't get that delight I feel when the meat moistens my tongue and caresses my tastebuds. Part of the experience of eating a superb burger is the ooze it brings, and this was dry. Not offensively so, but dry nonetheless.
I have purposely not dinged the burger on account of the fries. I said earlier that the fries were a disappointment. They were. Bagged, frozen, cooked once. No way they were the best in Texas. They probably weren’t the best in Jefferson.
I guess I still rate the burger as an A- or maybe a B+. If you include the fries, I can't see the meal rising above a B.
I am still mystified why Texas Monthly gave out the ratings that they did. I reckon they must have sent their Austin-based staff out to sample burgers, and Austin is not the same as anywhere else in Texas. It would be like sending out Wall Streeters to sample the pasties in the U.P.—they just wouldn't get it.
Washing on the lines of a commercial laundry in Fort Kochi. The Dhobi Khana laundry is akin to a co-operative, where washermen and women rent a tub and bay to fulfill laundry contracts they each have. There is not a clothes-peg in sight in this vast outdoor drying area. All items are neatly captured in the twists of the coir rope clothes-lines.

The pre-prandial warming-up part of Conni's Avant Garde Restaurant is key: the audience settles in, meets friends and soon-to-be-tablemates, chooses all-important noms de repas (dinner names - tonight I am Dominique Strauss-Wrath-of-Khan), eats yummy appetizers, and lubricates a bit with visits to the pre-show bar.
Some of the actors amble through the crowd looking pretty much like audience members. Others, like Stephanie Dodd as the new character Miss Flipper Baby, are a little easier to spot.
