Syringa vulgaris (lilac or common lilac) is native to the Balkan Peninsula, where it grows on rocky hills. This species is widely cultivated as an ornamental and has been naturalized in other parts of Europe as well as much of North America.

Lilacs were introduced into European gardens at the end of the sixteenth century, from Ottoman gardens, not through botanists exploring the Balkan habitats of S. vulgaris.

Syringa meyeri 'Palibin' A stunning addition to make to your patio, this fantastic new dwarf Lilac naturally grows to just 4-6ft tall so is just the thing for small gardens or for sprucing up patios and decking areas in a large pot! Ideal for adding colour, fragrance and a beautiful twist on other Lilac varieties that can often take over your garden. Because Palibin is a dwarf variety of the classic lilac, it won’t take over your beds and borders and will not grow too tall meaning you can really enjoy the beautiful flowers and fragrance with very little maintenance required. A deadheading of faded flowers will keep the lilac flowering for as long as possible, and there’ll be little to no pruning needed thanks to its dwarf and compact nature. It’s slow growing, easy to care for, perfect for pots and very hardy too - why not try growing as a fragrant flowering hedge for something a little bit different?

Lilac

I visited the Society of Botanical Atists' fabulous Exhibition in London yesterday. Wow, such talented artists. I can neither draw nor paint …..so I take photos instead!

Syringa oblata. Not as fragrant as the Eastern U.S. variety, by my nose. But pretty; here in front of a red azalea at the UC Botanical Garden.

Syringa josikaea, the Hungarian lilac, is a species of lilac, native to central and eastern Europe, in the Carpathian Mountains in Hungary, Romania, and western Ukraine.

This is så impressive in colours that it is difficult to go for monochrome. But bnw gives another, more tranquil and quiet expression. enabling to rest in the details.
