The sculpture is one of the best known ones in Wrocław. A fountain with the Swordsman at Uniwersytecki Square is one of the most favourite meeting places for students.
The fountain is an interesting Secession sculptures. It was designed by Hugo Lederer, a professor from the Fine Arts Academy in Berlin. In November 1904 it was installed at Uniwersytecki Square.
The legend says that the swordsman from the fountain is the author himself. He is said to have come to Wrocław as a student and, inebriated by his friends, he pawned not only his money but also his clothes during the card play. The sneaky students left him only with a sword - symbol of nobility and man’s honour.

A gladiator (Latin: gladiator, "swordsman", from gladius, "sword") was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers who risked their lives and their legal and social standing by appearing in the arena. Most were despised as slaves, schooled under harsh conditions, socially marginalized, and segregated even in death.
Irrespective of their origin, gladiators offered spectators an example of Rome's martial ethics and, in fighting or dying well, they could inspire admiration and popular acclaim. They were celebrated in high and low art, and their value as entertainers was commemorated in precious and commonplace objects throughout the Roman world.

I spent weeks setting up a “Cherry Blossom Samurai” photoshoot for March. Finally, the cherry tree blossoms were peaking in downtown Portland, but the day before the shoot, the model had to cancel flying to Portland because her city just locked down for the coronavirus.
With things easing up recently, I used the props and costumes to shoot along the same theme with my neighbor.
Since there were no cherry blossoms, I had to settle for a composited background.
I blame skip & Decepti for this insanity!
These modern little figs ARE a kick to play w/!

"The mind must always be in the state of 'flowing,' for when it stops anywhere that means the flow is interrupted and it is this interruption that is injurious to the well-being of the mind. In the case of the swordsman, it means death." ― Takuan Sōhō

War is not freedom
Over my shoulder
I see a clearer view
All for my family
Reason I'm breathing
Everything to lose
Should I ask myself in the water
What a warrior would do?
Tell me, underneath my armor

More samurai cosplay with my neighbor. We got a lot of great pictures that day, I learned a lot and it sure was fun. If I just hadn't forgotten my mood board with poses at home! Anyway, I think this is the last photo of this series I'm going to post.
I thought my Indiana Jones figures could use an upgrade since I wasn’t particularly happy with my other ones(I forgot to post my Last Crusade figs😬). But here they are!

More samurai cosplay with my neighbor. I did a couple of versions of this photo I liked that really pushed the vintage, old paper look, but thought maybe the washed-out yellows weren't too flattering to the model, so I chose this toned-down version.
What started off as a 3 panel mosaic covering The Great Nebula in Orion, The Horsehead, Barnards Loop and M78 soon became a much larger project including over 20 deep space objects and the majority of the Orion Molecular Cloud. The final mosaic image covers 13.5 x 6.8 degrees of our night's sky.

Dominating the night sky from December through March, the ancient constellation Orion is one of the most famous and most photographed star groups in the heavens. The ancient Greeks associated these stars with a mighty hunter adorned with a belt and sword, holding a westward facing shield in his left hand and an upraised club in his right. These stars were even included in the fictional world of J.R.R. Tolkien where they were called Menelva-gor, the “Swordsman of the Sky”

"The years passed. Falcis had roamed in many lands, trying to rally support for his cause, but the words of his nephew traveled faster than his horse. He was met by blank stares at best and challenged to duels at worst. Being the master swordsman that he was, these duels ended in his favor and his skills became even more honed.
Disturbing rumors reached him about the state of Avisia. Happiness, hospitality and justice was now a rare sight. The people were impoverished and starving, overtaxed on their livestock and land. Falcis pulled his cloak up over his head and began his march to set things right.
A dark gloom hung over the royal castle. The gold and marble had been stripped from the walls of the throne room and the royal falcon crest had been disfigured into its most predatory form. As Larus recognized the blue cloaked vagabond who had entered, he leapt from his throne, his sword in hand within seconds. Falcis stood like a statue, ready for whatever his foe might do next..."

The Ruined Church Of St James Bawsey ........ Bawsey Old Church: Situated in open undulating farmland just east of Kings Lynn, the forlorn ruins of Bawsey Old Church looks stark and somewhat menacing as they silhouette and brood against the huge skies of Norfolk. Dedicated to St.James, Bawsey Old Church is one of many such fragmented church ruins that litter East Anglia.
The huge, gaunt dissected tower and aisle walls manifests a very fine Norman archway. Recent excavations on the hillside around the church, revealed a fine skeleton of which the skull had sustained a powerful blow from a swordsman. Probably dating from the Anglo Saxon period, Bawsey Old Church may well be on the site of a much earlier settlement that pre dated the Normans, and one that was raided by Viking Norsemen.
Records are rather scant about Bawsey, but it seems that the village was still thriving in the 16th century
