Spoon - The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine

www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmmM58C-ZRI&list=PLgR08b3J_lG...

Every morning I've got a new chance

I want to land the part of Eddie in The Stranger Dance

Cause he gets to swordfight the duke

He kidnaps the queen

And you think the score's set but you can't truly see

Til you know the two sides of Monsieur Valentine

Every morning I pull on them pants

Mmm but I don't get out so much since I acquired St. Vitus dance

I turn the news on a while

I practice my scene

You think things are straight but they're not what they seem

Til you know the two sides of Monsieur Valentine

In his coat and his boots and his blackheart machine

No, no one knows the two sides of Monsieur Valentine

Every morning I've got a new chance

I want to land the part of Eddie in The Stranger Dance

He makes love to the duke

He swordfights the queen

He steals the whole show in his last dying scene

No one sees the two sides of Monsieur Valentine

No, no one sees the two sides of Monsieur Valentine

Diese Schwerter sind so schwer, dass man sie mit beiden Händen halten musste. Das Holzschild konnte man nicht auch noch halten.

These swords are so heavy that you had to hold them with both hands. You couldn't hold the wooden defence shield as well.

because these warriors prefer sword fighting. I think it would take more skill to win a fight their way.

Out of nowhere this background bird hit the front one with an upper cut to the beak, then a left hook, it was stupendous!

These two Pelicans were hitting with right hooks, left hooks, kidney punches, upper cuts, and all of that, Pelicans were crowding all around for the big fight!

Actually, they weren't fighting at all, I just make stuff up, I am a known drama queen, so they say! :) I live vicariously through birds, I am boring. 😁

Usually when I create the Doodlewish prompt list for the month I try to do each prompt, but June is going to be a lot like May where I’m not around too much. I apologize in advance for not commenting as much as usual.

Nice song for this sword fighting scene :D.

I mentioned in an earlier post that Godwits spend a lot of time fighting and somebody commented "Sword-fighting presumably?" Well this shot really shows them sword-fighting with the right bird making a hit, hence the title "Touché!". Touché is also used euphemistically during a discussion when a clever point has been made at the other's expense.

Birds usually only fight when there is something worth fighting for, like a mate, a territory, or scarce food. So it seems odd that a gregarious species like Black-tailed Godwit would spend so much time fighting when it isn't the breeding season and food is around if they searched for it. This was taken at Martin Mere where large numbers of Black-tailed Godwits spend the winter.

One final thing; the last time anyone said "Touché!" to me was after he had complimented me on my photography then asked me what camera I used. Instead on answering I told him about the discussion between Ernest Hemingway and Ansell Adams, the great landscape photographer at the launch of an exhibition of his work. Hemingway said "You take some Goddamn fine pictures Ansell, what kind of camera do you use?" Ansell replied "You write goddamn fine stories Ernest, what sort of typewriter do you use?"

In training for a tournament, the guys of the Eskisehir Historical European Martial Arts group and me...they practice with their swords...me with a canon.

Photography for me is usually about escaping to the peace and quiet and stillness of nature...so this was a bit of a challenge, slightly different but fascinating in its own way. Amazingingly detailed in the theory and technique, very skillful swordsmen.

There are HEMA organisations in most European countries the UK and US, and here in Turkey too.

Shots from the Eskisehir Meet and Beat tourney coming soon..

When I get round to sorting them...12 hours of bouts. It was a long day...the shot here from a training session in the weeks before the national event.

This sequence has always stood out to me as one of the most memorable in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, largely due to how the entire church structure is used as an active stage for the swordfight — from the sanctuary interior to the rafters, bell tower, and ultimately transitioning into the jungle and mill sequence. It’s a dynamic, layered setting that blends architecture, choreography, and environment, making it a perfect subject to capture in LEGO.

My design process began by studying the scale and layout of the church. After several rewatches of the scene, I was able to determine the number of distinct levels inside the structure and focused first on modeling the more prominent bell tower. From there, I mapped out the path of the action — starting from the sanctuary, moving across wooden beams and through the deteriorating roof, and culminating in the runaway water mill barreling into the jungle.

The church itself is a decayed Spanish colonial building, marked by crumbling stonework, collapsed archways, and remnants of once-detailed masonry. I wanted to maintain its recognizable silhouette while embracing the chaos of its ruined state. Starting from the interior action layout helped me define the core proportions and then branch outward, layering in debris, broken tiles, and ornamental details now eroded by time and the jungle’s return.

When revisiting the build later, I incorporated newer foliage elements, including updated fern pieces and custom-built palm trees. These additions helped enrich the setting, emphasizing the lush, tropical jungle pressing in beyond the church’s ruined stone fences — creating a strong visual contrast between the structured decay of the church and the wild vitality of the surrounding environment.

Two ancient warriors, a purple-haired man and a blond woman, are swordfighting [maybe not so hard anymore] in a rough blue pond, among purple and grey cliffs, under a crimson sky.

This is another idea I was going to create from bricks for a long time, maybe a year or so. My original character makes her fifth appearance (here are her first, second, third and fourth pictures), and since her first appearance 2+ years ago I changed her story completely and for a while it was like two alternate universes, but last year I decided I'm not going to build a long camper van from two different camper vans I have, because the newer camper now belongs to my Eve and Villanelle and they object to sharing it (at least for now), so the first version of the story most probably will not appear in my pictures.

But I couldn't resist to bring another character from first version into second, though for her I completely changed not just the story and character traits, but her physical appearance as well, because in the second version she actually based on a real person, while in the first one she was a totally unrelated and independent original character. So maybe I am wrong by saying this is the character transferred from the first story, because in fact they have nothing in common, except those FANGS. xD The reason why I decided to change character into someone else was actually related to the phrase which was once told to me by a third person, which I considered such a brilliant observation I actually took another picture inspired by the quote only (not with any of the characters), and I supposed to post it before this picture, but I didn't had the convenient time for it, so I'll do this sometime later. The evolution of ideas is never fail to fascinate me!

And this particular scene was inspired by the song "Dangerous" by Two Steps From Hell, I think this interpretation fits quite literally. It was extremely hard to obtain the vampire minifigure from Vidiyo, which I needed for the picture, and it cost me few times more than it could be without all those shipping and payment complications, but it was worth it (though sadly my vampire has a huge misprint on her head, which I cleaned in Photoshop). Also it was tricky to place a camera in such a way, that it wouldn't reflect in the mirror - yes, this is a real mirror! ;)
