Janet's Foss on Gordale Beck, near Malham, after days of heavy rain...ah the English summer. Taken in the rain but at least it kept the tourists away so i had the place to myself for a bit.

Wain Wath is one of the waterfalls that keeps you coming back for more. Here it's showing colour from heavy rain the day before which is complementing the autumnal colours which are just starting to show. I used an ND32 (6 stop) filter and polariser for this photo.

The generic name Fratercula comes from the Medieval Latin fratercula, friar, a reference to the black and white plumage which resembles monastic robes. The specific name arctica refers to the northerly distribution of the bird, being derived from the Greek ἄρκτος ("arktos"), the bear, referring to the northerly constellation, the Great Bear.[8] The vernacular name "puffin" – puffed in the sense of swollen – was originally applied to the fatty, salted meat of young birds of the unrelated species Manx shearwater (Puffinus puffinus), which in 1652 was known as the "Manks puffin". It is an Anglo-Norman word (Middle English pophyn or poffin) used for the cured carcasses. The Atlantic puffin acquired the name at a much later stage, possibly because of its similar nesting habits, and it was formally applied to Fratercula arctica by Pennant in 1768.While the species is also known as the common puffin, "Atlantic puffin" is the English name recommended by the International Ornithological Congress.

Our river is just swollen now, no longer in flood stage. I snapped this on our first walk in the park in a long while on the nicest day in also a very long while. It is not the greatest photo, but it was a great day for us, especially getting out a little bit more after being so cooped up. We do go for an almost daily walk, but to walk in the park on such a glorious day was quite a treat.

Oh, and HBM.

Oedermera nobilis common names include False oil beetle, thick-legged flower beetle and swollen-thighed beetle. Easy the identify the females as they do not have swollen thighes.

The Meuse is a real rain river and regularly overflows its banks. Sometimes the water levels reach critical heights. In February 2021, things also looked bleak, but fortunately most people managed to keep their feet dry.

With a proudly swollen bright yellow chest, the handsome great tit male sits there and looks out. After what is not known to the photographer. Maybe it's the weekend, or the photographer himself. Maybe, and that's not unlikely, it's just a pretty female.

Basically it doesn't matter at all. The main thing is that he sits there and long enough that I can capture him in spite of the dull day and with it the weak light.

The swollen river Pēneiós (after the rains) as it flows beneath a bridge, next to Meteora, Greeece. On this long exposure shot, one can see the silver whirls of the river that Homer described (Iliad, book 2, 753).

The river Peneios (aka Peneus) is the main river of the plain of Thessaly with a total length of more than 124 miles (200 km). It rises in the Pindus range of mountains, crosses the valley of Tempē (cutting a path between Mt. Olympus and Ossa) and then it flows into the Aegean Sea. In mythology, the god Peneios was son of Oceanus and Tēthys.

Meteora is the name of the group comprising many impressive and lofty rock formations: The height of the sandstone megaliths ranges between 1,000-2,067 ft (300-630 m). The rock masses were formed 60 million years ago, are geologically unique and listed in UNESCO world heritage sites.

Here are a few lines from Homer’s poetry, mentioning the river:

In English:

“…Lovely Titaressos, who into Peneios (Peneus) casts his bright current: yet he is not mixed with the SILVER WHIRLS of Peneios, but like oil is floated along the surface above him: since he is broken from the water of Styx, the fearful oath-river…”

—Homer (Iliad, book 2, lines 749–754)

The downpour was so heavy that within 10 minutes the creek through the wetlands went from a gentle one metre wide stream to a gushing 8 metre wide torrent.

There had been some heavy and persistent rain which led to the water covering the car park at Semer Water (if you look closely you can see the car park sign under the left most tree). Combined with a stiff breeze and cloudy skies it made for a blustery scene.

Swollen-thighed Beetle (Oedemera nobilis) and friends. Tried focus stacking to get head and back in, 3 images. It duplicated the small insect to the right and I liked the outcome so left it in.

River Wharfe at Linton falls, swollen after the recent storm. I don't know how the people sleep in the houses next to the falls, they sound like a jet engine.

Here is what the fish river looked like after all the heavy rainfall we had recently.

The name Jatropha is derived from the Greek words for doctor (jatros) and food (trophe). Podagrica means “swollen foot,” fitting for this swollen succulent-looking plant.

It features a swollen “trunk” that is topped with several large fig-shaped leaves. Besides the swollen stem, it produces bright red flowers throughout the year.

The rain-swollen waters of Silver Creek drop, without a care in the world, over the lip of the imaginatively named "South Falls", Silver Falls State Park, Oregon.

I first visited here in the 5th grade when my teacher, Mr. RJ Bates, brought the class to the forest with its tumbling water to teach us how to identify the native trees by their bark, foliage, and cones. I am very conflicted looking back on my experience with this particular man. He served as a Sergeant in the Army in Viet Nam, and through the eyes of an adult looking back at his classroom behavior, I am almost certain he suffered from PTSD of some sort. He was fond of paddling children who failed to live up to his strict, disciplinary expectations. On the other hand, he took twenty-five 10-year-olds on a bus to the woods to help us learn about the plants, rivers, and beauty of the place we lived. When my 10-year-old self arrived here, I was enthralled.

I returned to Silver Creek with my mother, her husband, and my brother in May. A spring atmospheric river delivered a wet, chill greeting most of the day, and our breath fogged up the little Chevrolet from the inside as we drove twisting rural lanes toward the Park, past open fields, Christmas tree farms, and patches of forest. Being here always feels as if decades have vanished, responsibilities have not yet been imagined, and wonder pervades.
