Took this one with the treet camera. My first roll of pinhole photography. A soon-to-be demolished hotel sign and hotel. This pinhole stuff is WIDE. I didn't imagine that it'd end up this way.

Stitched from 4 or 5 images. The view from the Special Tree.

Maybe not my best ;) But heartfeltedly dedicated to all of my flickry friends who choose to spent some of their precious time in this stream. For your attention and inspiration: through images and kind words, an enormous thank you. I wish good things to all!

Took this with the treet camera. My first roll of pinhole photography. A hallway at work. Very long hall. This was like 6 second or 4 second exposure I think. My log didn't jive with my exposures. I'll have to be more "deliberate" next time.

I worked in graphite and cheapy watercolors..... see the notes for more info on how I do these.

See it Large

BIG DISCLAIMER.... I NEVER work from photos. I'm using the photo to show you how much real detail and info I get WRONG (or forget) when I sketch "people on the street."

In this exercise, I worked like I usually do, from memory. Notice that his body "gesture" isn't accurate. This isn't too unusual for me -- my memory stinks. But like I tell folks, body mechanics are the same for all body types... and when you learn to see how legs swing and clothes drape and shadows work... the knowledge seems to transfer to each new sketch.

And even this exercise of looking at a photo AFTER I work from memory is helpful. It reminds me that I need to take some quick notes, maybe?

What do I try to remember? Well, that's the fun part. I have to remember the person's gesture, clothing, and body type. Notice I missed all of those in some form or another. It's not a biggie though.

Why isn't it a biggie? Well, for one, it takes place quickly. This guy was in one place for like 5 or 10 seconds. So I can't remember everything in that amount of time. So then it becomes more about the character's story... and telling a story is what I'm trying to do visually. So I allow myself the freedom to forget certain things.

For me, HIS story was "there's change way down in there somewhere." Deeeeeeeep in his pocket. So, for example, I got the sweatshirt wrong... but I still managed to tell the most important part of this story — "big guy" digging in his pocket for a little coin.

I'd be a terrible eye witness. :)

I dedicate this picture to the wife of Possum4all who suffered a malicous Donkey Bite.....

Western Carolina Nature Center, Asheville, NC

Well, the mystery has been solved! I have spent the last couple months collecting pictures of local religous signs. It became apparent that there was a common artist behind these signs as there was a unique handwriting. My escapades are chronicled here www.flickr.com/photos/55314293@N00/sets/72157594174358567/

As it turns out I had already met the man responsible, in fact he had been to my home and I am actually related to him by marriage!!!

Last night when I took a couple picture of Jesus signs I had the distinct feeling that it was over.....I felt as though I had found them all....It must have been a preminition

When my wife brought up my hobby to her grandparents her grandfather said that the man behind the signs was his nephew! It turns out that he had been to our house when our septic tank backed up and and had try to locate it in our yard using Water Withcery

He blew me away when he said "It's right here" and we dug to find a buried cable. It said that his rod picks it up all the time. It turns out that the local power company actually pays him to locate stuff underground. Despite having no scientific backing his skill sure seems to have teeth.

About an hour after hearing this I drove by this sign

I never thought that I would figure out who was behind these signs and I am really suprised that the answer landed in my lap....and I am in shock on who it ended up being. I want to thank everyone who has taken time to look through my Jesus Sign set and followed my obsession. A special thanks goes out to Possum4all for his continued viewing and input on my search

Amen!

Possum indirectly challenged me to try a more painterly approach to my watercolor, rather than just painting in a pen & ink drawing. I am scared silly of "straight" watercolor. This was my first attempt of the day. I started with a very loose pencil sketch and went from there.

What I learned in this painting is that I really need to start paying attention to aerial perspective. The tree off the left rear corner of the house should be much bolder in comparison to the evergreens dotting the hill (they should be much lighter, I think). I did have some small success getting decent dimensionality in the porch area, with the paired columns. Overall, kind of a dud, though. The house is missing context, and almost looks like a confection of some sort or another. At least I gave it the old college try. It was very scary and I almost stopped halfway.

I have mixed emotions about this "Main Street" development in Buena Vista. It will bring more services and variety to the area, in one sense. But that comes with a lack of authenticity, IMO. Everything will be new, but calculated to look quaint. It will be something like a ski resort, which is a bit depressing. Oh well, that's progress.

From my Collaboration with Possum4all This one is my absolute favorite.

This plus this makes this.

It was fun as hell to make, once I figured it out thanks to .olivia.!

My new icon is "new" for a week. I lost a bet with my flickr friend Capn Mad Matt. The bet.....whoever finishes higher in the BCS has to wear the badge of the loosing team for a week. So, here it is. One week. Sigh. Go Hokies!

Oh....why'd I make a crazy bet like this? Well, just for fun, and because I miss playing the Mountaineers. Now all we can do is speculate about who the better team is. So....it gets solved in the stupid polls. bleh

For a Little History, start here.

And see my other fun posts regarding WVU.

Cheers to Matt.

This is a first -- albeit flawed, and I consider failed -- attempt to create something for the foto fornication group -- the source material is something that was already a fused image for f.f.by the very talented Flickrites, .olivia., & possum4all.

My flickr contact Steven has a site called GiftSketch where, for a reasonable fee, he'll ink sketch and watercolor a landmark or building or some place customized to your liking. You know, like the landmark that is our house. I've been a big fan of his work on his flickr stream where he does sketches of places in and around Blacksburg, VA, Virginia Tech and other commissions. One such sketch was of a house being attacked by zombies. So, when I found out that he had launched his site, I wanted our house under attack as a surprise for Lori -- she loved it. We'll be framing and finding a perfect spot for it in the house soon.

I've never met Steven in real life, but we've been flickr contacts for a few years and he's good buddies with my awesome friend Jim, so he's got to be good people. For those that know Jim, I asked Steven to add him as a zombie. He should be easy to spot.

If you're looking for something similar, please check his site out.

Thanks Steven!

I got a lot of great advice last week. This one best represents that advice, I think.

The treet camera took this one. My first roll of pinhole photography. That's me. I'm counting down from 6 seconds so my mouth was open. Duh. Spikey hair! I need a hair cut.

For a gift my wife is giving to someone she works with. It's a "work in progress"....I have to add the watercolor washes to it and it'll be done. The proportions are wrong....made some mistakes, etc.....but it's a sketch. Oh, and I did lay this one out in graphite before doing the ink....just to be a bit less "rough" about it. :-)

Ok, so we got good news today about our son. The mass in his neck is NOT something that we need to worry about, according to the pediatrician. It is a Distended Jugular Vein with a twisted root that makes it bulge up. (The doc, btw, has never seen anything like this, so we might ask to talk to someone who HAS, but we're glad that the diagnosis isn't as dire as originally thought.)

Thanks and best wishes to zoonie for her timely answers to my questions about hygroma last week. Flickr is such a unique and special place.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts and little prayers over the last few days.

FOLLOW UP NOTE:

I've noticed a lot of hits via google for "distended jugular vein" image searches. If you have questions about this condition in children, I'd be happy to communicate with you about our experience via Flickr messaging. Just drop me a line. Our son ended up having the entire segment of his jugular removed at the University of Virginia. He's perfectly healthy. No side effects.

Please see the image at the bottom of this page for a better view.

From the treet camera, loaded with some off-the-shelf Fuji ISO200 film this time. This was indoors. Funky, huh?

About the title... I've always been a fan of the Police. When they reunited this year, I thought...well, now's my chance, after nearly two and a half decades to finally get to see them live.... but, I thought about it and I think I like to think of them as they were...not as they are. Washed up pop stars trying to play on my sentiments.

I trying to figure out how to take some through the viewfinder shots.......How's this?

Shout out to Possum4all for introducing me to this type of photography.....

The treet camera in action. My frist roll of pinhole photography. That's me. Check out that reflection flare. Blammo!

So, just four short days after being away from the computer for my grandfather's funeral, I come back to discover that one of my photos has been appropriated by Roanoke's Valley Business Front magazine blog, MoreFRONT. Ugh. Bummer. Boo.

Imagine my surprise when I pop open my Google Reader and there's one of my photos in a blog... straight from flickr, I hoped -- but that was not to be so.

How? Well, easy, I suppose. Just do a search on Google for "Radford Foundry" and it's the first image that appears.

CSI NRV supposes that it was someone's hurried image search that resulted in how it was used -- but that's pure speculation. Heck the journalists could have been given the image to use without knowing the source. Who knows? Who cares, right? Trained journalists are supposed to check their sources. KNOW their sources, right?

Well, it wouldn't have bothered me much at all if there had been a link to the original flickr page. What saddens me is that it was a blog I read and enjoy. Not some random Russian news site that sucks down and uses my image for stock photography. A local blog. Ugh.

No blood no foul you say? Well, I suppose, except that instead of a link, my image was completely downloaded and re-uploaded to the Blogger system without as much as a link to the original. No attribution (until later today) and no compensation -- not that I would expect any. I've openly shared images before without expectations of either.

Too bad, really. That's 2010 I suppose.

I normally don't draw "people on the street" sketches of people I actually know, but this scene was super sweet -- dad and daughter -- so I had to put it down.

Hope my friend Mitchell doesn't mind. He's a fellow member of the Super Hip Specs Society.

Do you have hip specs? Mine are starting to show their age.

If I'd waited a few weeks (and hours) there'd be hundreds of students from Tech and Radford down here, tubing. Larger Version is here.

The tubing company website is kinda ugly, but the tubes are fun. And looks like they have wifi, so if you feel like waterproofing your laptop, you can work and tube at the same time. Yes!

The last bit of summer is winding down. I won't be posting much over the next few weeks for several reasons....cheif of which is our son (2 years old) has an unidentified mass at the bass of his neck. He had a CT scan yesterday and now we're waiting for a diagnosis or a tentative diagnosis. Hopefully we'll know more later in the week. I know all you in flickr land will keep him in your prayers. I know a lot of you have children of your own and know what it's like to worry about them. We're hopeful and praying for answers. I'll let you know more later. Sincerest thanks, Steven!
