These brave/crazy jet skiers took on the big waves and swell following a recent storm on the Gold Coast.
View from the track bed of the former GWR Brincetown Branch just below Swell Tor Quarry which was rail served.
This is looking down hill towards Burrator and Yelverton.
Part of the tip can be seen to the left. The railway closed in 1956 and is now a foot/cycle path between Princetown and Burrator Reservoir. If the line has survived for another decade it is likely it would have made a fine tourist line opening up a large area of Dartmoor to visitors as its route is far away from the roads for much of its length.

Fortunately for us hurricane Irma stayed away from Martinique. Thoses waves were nice to shoot but our thoughts go to those who have lost everything in the north Caribbean.
Out to sea, the horizon is a sliver against the sky as mountains of water rise and shift in the cold winter air...

The area's fortunes changed when the Milbankes sold out in 1821 to the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, who built a harbour, in 1828, to facilitate transport of goods from locally encouraged industries (the first coal mine was begun in 1845).

Swell Maps were an English experimental DIY, early punk or post-punk rock group from Birmingham, England, active in various forms between 1972 and 1980. Influenced by bands such as T. Rex and the German krautrock groups such as Can and Faust,[1] they went on to be influential to many others in the post-punk era.

Part of The San Rafael Swell in Utah, also known as “The Little Grand Canyon.”
The San Rafael Swell measures around 75 by 40 miles (121 by 64 km), and consists of giant dome-shaped anticline of sandstone, shale, and limestone that was pushed up during the Paleocene Laramide Orogeny 60-40 million years ago. Since then, extremely powerful flash floods have eroded the sedimentary rocks into numerous valleys, canyons, gorges, mesas, and buttes.
Part of the Swell has geographic features that resemble the planet Mars. The Mars Society decided to set up the Mars Desert Research Station in the area as a Mars analog for such reasons.
I'm back from a lovely weeks holiday on NZ's West Coast, I've got lots of catching up to do now (and lots of photos to process).
This is the mouth of the Grey River at Greymouth, the swell that was coming in was huge but great to watch.
There's a handy little tree stump on the edge of Swell Wood car park, and when I was there on Sunday with Cosper Wosper it was illuminated by a shaft of sunlight. A handful of seed was duly dispensed, and within 30 seconds the birds were arriving to get first dibs.
