Surrealists, Pataphysicians, "Humour fumiste" artists and other devotees of derision and irrationality have always attracted and excited me a lot. Sometimes I let myself be contaminated by these turns of mind to the point of concocting crazy photos.
The only difference between me and a madman is that the madman thinks he is not mad, while I know I am:

Earning international acclaim, Joan Miró's work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting and photography methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and famously declared an "assassination of painting" in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting.
Viva Surrealism !!
A surrealist vision, these villages under the sun above the sea of clouds. Usually, we can see the town of Mâcon behind the hill in front.

Max Ernst ( 1891 - 1976 ), one of the greatest artists of the Dada and Surrealist movements, has always been an important inspiration to me. Not only in his fantastically varied imagery but in his view of Art as coming from somewhere deep inside the psyche, where reason and analysis have no entrance. So for him, Art was a 'blind' dipping into that realm in the hopes of bringing something to the surface that, while visible to the everyday consciousness, still vibrated with the energy and character of the antipode that gave it birth.
I've been increasingly moving in this direction. So this piece was an improvisation. The images comprising it were all randomly chosen from my old 'straight shot' photography files and then blended and montaged in a 'free-form' assembly utilizing each photograph as an abstract element. Surrealist automatic drawing was used for the lines, and effects were applied 'willy-nilly', as it were.
Instead of trying for 'something that I had in mind' I let the piece develop it's own rules and responded to its transformations as it evolved.

MATERA - In 2019, Matera is European Capital of Culture. In front of the Church of San Francesco d`Assisi the "Surrealist Piano", this is one of Dalí's major iconoclastic symbols. The artist has chosen to transform the banal wooden legs of a piano, replacing them with dancing female legs, this creating an animate, joyous instrument that can dance as well as play.

Lordi - They Only Come Out At Night
You know you saw them but no-one ever listens
They'll be long gone by the time the sun has risen
You feel 'em lurking, hear 'em howling in the shadows
Wreaking haboc on your perfect world
They are the tricking trolls
They got the bell that tolls
Flash at the edge of your sight
They only come out at night
They only come out at night
They only come out at night
They only come out at night
The shadows breathe with a venom like no other
A silent evil where there shouln't be another, no no
I feel 'em lurking, hear 'em howling in the shadows
Wreaking haboc on your perfect world
They are the tricking trolls
They got the bell that tolls
Flash at the edge of your sight
They only come out at night
They only come out at night
They only come out at night
They only come out at night
[Solo]
Don't know what's at stake
I think they're right beside me
I gotta stay awake
And keep them all from biting
They only come out at night
They only come out at night

Paris - France -

When I was at the Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh a couple of years ago, I took some photos of a surrealist painting by Cecil Collins that I like a lot. It was painted in 1936 and titled "The Joy of the Worlds".
The central image, top row is the whole painting. The one immediately below that is a close-up of 'the pilgrim' and to the right of that is a close-up of the bottom left portion of the painting. All the other cells in my collage are images I have produced by blending and/or manipulating parts of the painting to create 'new images'.
"Collins was influenced by scientific and biological developments, such as recent advances in the illustration of cells and by astronomical photographs. Among the biomorphic forms in the painting stands a man with a staff and halo. He appears elsewhere in Collins's work as 'The Pilgrim.' The surrounding form can therefore be seen as a protective womb for this new image of man. The use of green is unusual in Collins's work at this time." National Galleries of Scotland website.

I took an original image taken in the Sovereign Harbour, UK and used the two filters surrealist and watercolour in post processing to get this effect.
