This year my Oregon Grape cultivar 'Charity' gave me a wonderful surprise. It produced grapes, after several years with none. I had assumed that I would enjoy it for its awesome yellow candelabra flowers alone, which cheered me up each year in the depths of winter. Surprise! This year it produced beautiful but sour grapes in abundance. :)
"My extravagance is my garden - it's the first thing that I look at every morning when I wake up. It gives me so much pleasure."

I had to add another angle of this frog capture by the great blue heron. They both look surprised.
After trailing (at a discrete distance) this heron for a while I was able to capture the capture of the frog by the heron.
Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) I was stalking a little egret along the bank of our local reservoir when this heron suddenly burst out from the cover of the reeds in front of me. I just managed to get the camera on him but I don't know who was more surprised!
A rare encounter I likely will never see again! A stunning sight to see this beauty out in the open at dusk. He/she was looking out into the open fields, hopefully a big fat vole was had for dinner. :)
So at the very end of May we got caught in some snow falls on our trip. Thought I would post it for your Winter in July shot - to cool things down!
Most of the snow fell on us at higher altitudes like the Snowy Mountain Range in Wyoming but this was near Flaming Gorge!
Happy Smile on Saturday!
This Black-Capped Chickadee's attempt to startle the American Pine Marten resulted in very little reaction from the marten - - he was pretty chill you might say !
Visited Temecula, a city in southern CA known for its wineries. A beautiful city to visit and offers incredible wines and views. We stayed at a B & B and wasn't told about the hot air balloons! Having coffee outside that morning was such a nice surprise!
I just thought I'd upload a few more pictures of Ashala from my last shoot of her in the back garden. I chose this one because of the surprise look she has on her face...

On the way a few Japanese macaques crossed the footpath ... they were fast ….. it was a surprise for both parties ;-))
Kamikochi (上高地, Kamikōchi) is a popular resort in the Northern Japan Alps of Nagano Prefecture.
I was surprised to see this beautiful leaf the other day, already with the fiery colors of autumn. Though I love the warm days of summer...with gorgeous foliage, awesome pumpkins, and of course..Halloween, autumn is my favorite time of the year, and it'll be here before we know it :-)
Have a wonderful Monday and week ahead, my friends.
Plan was for Stanage or Higger Tor but they still had their heads in the clouds so made my way to Surprise View.
Not sure about this as woodland isn't something that comes easy to me so go easy on me:)

My daughter, Jessica, who lives in Estes Park, Colorado and turned 25 today, sent me a few photos of an unexpected group of celebrants who had gathered in her backyard to extend their best wishes. On closer inspection, you will note the bull of the elk herd in the upper right maintaining a rightful and appropriate distance from the females, no doubt making sure they behave properly and don't get rowdy.

Well this is not one bird that I was expecting to find. I was busy trying to photograph a Black Throated Green Warbler which was very busy singing and bouncing from tree to tree and lo-and behold, a Blackburnian popped up, not very impressed with the vocal warbler on the edge of his territory.
Surprise, it's a monarch. This beauty is a male. From the looks of him I'd say he's a freshie.
Have a Sensational Sunday and happy snapping.

When SP conductor Gary Smart checked his paperwork at Roper Yard, he couldn't believe his eyes. Rio Grande SD45 No. 5331 was assigned to lead his Roper, Utah to Denver, Colorado Forwarder. Gary originally hired out on the D&RGW, and was ecstatic when he saw his train.
The RODVF 15 made very good time as it tackled the Wasatch Mountain grade and crossed the Green River Desert region of eastern Utah to journey's end at Grand Junction, Colorado.

Who would have expected to ever see her here, silently admiring the sunset from my Baja cabin? I tiptoed quietly, doing my best not to scare her away yet again. The soft click of the Leica shutter was barely audible. She did smile, I swear!
Quelle belle surprise....

Clouds in the sky after a rainy morning. I went to Oak Canyon to get out and smell the fresh air. This set was captured from the same spot on a hill top. I was lucky today. It was a good day.
I had seconds to get this shot. Good thing my camera was on and close to the correct settings.
I won't just survive
Oh, you will see me thrive
Can't write my story
I'm beyond the archetype
I won't just conform
No matter how you shake my core
'Cause my roots, they run deep, oh
Oh, ye of so little faith
Don't doubt it, don't doubt it
Victory is in my veins
I know it, I know it
And I will not negotiate
I'll fight it, I'll fight it
I will transform
When, when the fire's at my feet again
And the vultures all start circling
They're whispering, you're out of time
But still, I rise
This is no mistake, no accident
When you think the final nail is in, think again
Don't be surprised, I will still rise

Good morning, dear Flickr friends!
I surprised myself today. So I was surprised when I found myself on the jetty around 6:30. How the hell had I got there? Had the Corona Virus caught me and my brain was affected? Had I ended up in some bad TV series and couldn't get out? I winced and looked around. Fortunately, no bites nearby. I got ready for the "Games of Drone" series and really, it was freezing cold. I literally froze my ass. Drones take off at minus 4 degrees ... Ice crystals everywhere on my stuff. Where had I had breakfast and what was there? Fish? My back was freezing cold. I tried myself as a jetty dancer to keep myself supple. The Alpha 7 on the tripod also looked kind of frozen. We tried to be big friends, but the beast of tripod was freezing cold. I was rewarded with the wonderful position lights from the sight of my beautiful drone. It was worth giving the Local Hero. Everything went well and none of us crashed. Unfortunately I had parked my car in the middle of the market place and - hell the devil - sausage and cheese, fruit and vegetables around me and this damn orderly who immediately issued me a ticket. Become expensive photos again. I think I have to leave my bank details here for donations.
So take care, don't let it bite you and we'll see you ....

I was probably more surprised than this Pileated Woodpecker when it was suddenly right in front of me as I walked through a wooded area. It did stay there while I took a couple of close range photos and kept walking. A high ISO shot from the darkness of the tree canopy.
Thank you for viewing
Snow Surprise last day of the month Jan 31 a surprise snow came in the morning not very much, wet with some sleet, probably gone by tomorrow, shot In North Carolina.
PS: Saturday was sunny and 50F degrees with no snow left.
I was just headed to my backyard to fill my two bird feeders when I looked up and saw the profile of a bird I didn't recognize as one of my regular visitors to the bird feeders. He was turned in such a way that I couldn't quite get a good look at his head. I thought he kind of has the coloring of a hawk, but he's too bulky to be a hawk. Then he turned his head to face me, as if on a swivel, and was I surprised to see this beautiful bird face to face! He couldn't have been more than six feet up the tree. I very slowly filled both bird feeders and kept saying to myself as I walked back into my house "please let him still be there when I come back with my zoom lens!" I came back with my camera and there he was. I talked to him very softly and calmly and he seemed to be fine as I got closer and closer to him. I have never had the opportunity to photograph an owl in the wild, so this was a first for me. Here are a couple of my favorite shots of my "Surprise Visitor".
