Hi there,
It's supposed to get red hot today (37C/98F - 45C/113F with humidity), so I figured I'd saturate the colours and add a few effects for Sliders Sunday. HSS!

We were supposed to be hiking but no one would venture out in the crazy winds so I wandered the beach alone. There was an iceberg in the distance and crashing waves but what I loved most was the sea spray on my face, salty and cold. It all sort of makes me feel alive and as I sit behind a desk today....this is where my head will be.

It was supposed to be cloudy & wet this morning on the Isle of Wight, but as you can see the Sun was out and the Dartfords were up at the top singing their hearts out, happy days especially since they seem to be in very short supply this year due to the harsh winter and the National Trust decimating their normal habitat on West Highdown opposite in the name of management & regeneration. You would think they would leave well alone especially given the rarity and sensitivity of this species:-)

I was going to upload some more puffin shots but time has got away with me so no time to edit them. Instead a shot taken last weekend at Bracelet Bay , Mumbles. It is supposed to be summer here but gales and rain for most of the weekend. I dashed out in a brief dry slot to get some rough sea shots.
We were supposed to see plenty of beautiful canyons like one seen here through the arch. The fog that morning was so thick that you saw just the end of the universe beyond the cliff. Occasional hole in the cloud would open mysterious view like this. Fog, rain and occasional snow flakes added to the experience. Wonderful place and a wonderful day!

So very sorry to hear of those harmed in Nova Scotia. So very sad.
It's supposed to be really warm here today, so I spontaneously had the idea of a visual cool-down.
So today I would like to take you back to Vilsalpsee in the wintry, snowy Tannheim valley in Austria. If anyone is looking for the said lake, it is under the snow cover.
I invite you to stop here for a quick refreshment. It was minus 10 degrees and a constant icy wind blew in my face across the open space.
Maybe that will help one or the other get through the day better. If not, I'd be happy to hear about your alternatives.

Also möchte ich Euch heute nochmal an den Vilsalpsee im winterlich verschneiten Tannheimer Tal in Österreich mitnehmen. Falls jemand den besagten See sucht, der befindet sich unter der Schneedecke.
Ich lade Euch ein, Euch hier eine kurze Erfrischung zu holen. Es waren minus 10 Grad und über die freie Fläche wehte mir ein steter eisiger Wind ins Gesicht.
Vielleicht hilft das dem ein oder anderen besser durch den Tag zu kommen. Falls nicht, würde ich mich freuen, Eure Alternativen zu erfahren.

I know! Its supposed to be a serious study of some Pyramidal Orchids but I just couldnt resist the title really. I do wish I had my Mum to cuddle me now.
I walked the sand dunes for hours last Tuesday looking for orchids and I was well rewarded with a group of 30 in one area.I have reported them to the National Floral Biodiversity Office [ Link Below ] with a grid reference of their location. Truly precious natural beauties that need to be cherished.

Sunday was supposed to be gray and cloudy, instead the sun was already shining in the morning and lasted most of the day. At sunrise I went to Steina "quickly" because I hadn't expected such weather at all. The fact that there was even a sun halo exceeded all expectations ...

There is something just so lonely to me about marshland, this in-between place, as if nothing ever finds its rest there, everything constantly shifting.
Whenever I have driven through this place, across the Pevensey Levels, and I have stopped and taken photographs and stood looking at the marshes, I am aware that I am never alone. There is an overwhelming feeling of being watched or followed.
It has always been an awareness that I cannot seem to shake off, and the twisting road across the levels only increases this feeling as it turns back on itself seeking the higher ground through the marsh. I thought that a sunny day might help to dissipate this feeling, rather than being in the mist or rain, but strangely it was even more oppressive, in the warm, sometimes windy conditions on this day in late May.

one more shot from Houghton House, Near Ampthill, Bedfordshire. It's supposed to be haunted, aren't they all. I was the only person there...did feel a little spooky...
This special lavender isn't supposed to grow much anyway as it is a dwarf lavender which I brought home from a garden exhibition today. I bought more than planned and most of my purchases will probably show up in my photo stream sooner or later. I bought the lavender for the simple reason that I had never seen a dwarf lavender before and Fynn seemed to find it quite interesting too.
The weather is supposed to be particularly hot today. Even if I have absolutely no problem with high temperatures, after all it's summer and this is something what you can notice, let's go back to a slightly cooler day in May.
This photo was taken on a short morning walk in the fields not far from my house. Actually, I walked to this point to have a clear view of the rape field (I have already shown the picture of what happened there).
But then, when I turned around to walk back to the path, I saw this and was amazed.
As you can see, looking back is sometimes just as important as looking forward. And that doesn't just apply to photography.
Heute soll das Wetter ja besonders heiß werden. Auch wenn ich mit hohen Temperaturen absolut kein Problem habe, schließlich ist ja Sommer und das darf man ruhig auch merken, gehe ich mal zurück zu einem etwas kühleren Tag im Mai.
Dieses Foto entstand bei einem kurzen Morgenspaziergang in den Feldern unweit meines Hauses. Eigentlich bin ich an diese Stelle gelaufen, um freie Sicht auf das Rapsfeld zu haben (das Bild, was da enstanden ist, hab ich schon hier gezeigt).
Doch dann, als ich mich umgedreht hatte, um zum Weg zurück zu laufen, habe ich das hier gesehen und war begeistert.
Wie Ihr seht ist der Blick zurück manchmal genau so wichtig, wie der nach vorn. Und das gilt nicht nur beim Fotografieren.

The supposed landing spot of Sir Francis Drake in 1591, when he came ashore for repairs, food and water. He did write of the cliffs reminding of those of Dover.
This morning a herd of female Thule elk graze above the bay. I wonder did the crew include ancestors of these in their provisions as they set sail again.
I went out searching for thunderstorms that were supposed to be sweeping in across the area, but instead I found this incredible little valley. Clouds hanging low in the sky, fog rolling between the trees, the moody scene so to speak, and even in summer when the haze is thick I saw the drama, the promise that stretched out in front of me. I setup, and began adjusting, moving the camera back and forth. The area to shoot was narrow, but handy. I thought about zooming past the evergreens and focusing solely on the valley, but then I thought better of it. Using them as a framing device, letting them give a sense of depth to the scene without distracting overmuch from it. Then the wait was on, between gusts of wind, and the occasional rain rolling through, eventually I began seeing a scene worthy of showing off to my viewers.

Fox sparrows are not supposed to be here in the winter, but this one decided to stay. Those fluffy feathers are keeping it warm at 0 F (-18 C), although the winter storm had not hit here yet. By tomorrow night it will likely feel 40 degrees colder outside with blowing snow and this sparrow will face difficult conditions to survive.
It was summer (well supposed to be but as you know........). There was rain and wicked thunderstorms on our Sylvan Lake walk, north of Queenstown.
I was terrified we might get struck by lightening or it would hit one of these trees, causing it to come crashing down. I think we did the walk at a half walk, half run pace. However, this little scene stopped me in my tracks. The heavy rain had accumulated around the base of the trees forming a pond that captured the fallen leaves and reflections. So many plants producing a tangled riot of form, texture and variations in shades - of green. I tried to imagine what the greens would be like during Autumn and my imaginings came up with this.
Hope it doesn't stress the purists too much!

Fishermen and photographers both have better luck if they get out early. Because of this, some photographers are known to go back to bed when the good light is gone. Some even fall asleep outside in one of those canvas folding chairs later in the afternoon. Some very severe examples may exhibit both behaviors. Wishing you a good week ahead and the opportunity to nap in one of those canvas folding chairs (maybe even outside, it's supposed to be a little warmer this week).
This is supposed to be a common butterfly in Kansas, but I'd never seen one in the park. Happily it's a new species for my prairie Lepidoptera species collection.

Caught a glimpse of a section of roof lines and noted the horizontals but very nearly no verticals other than the chimney stacks and a couple of dormer windows - nothing special but thought I would give it a snap . I have a feeling that it is two separate dwellings as well .
Not a shot that I should have seen or taken as we were supposed to be a hundred miles away on a short break that never happened and was called off at the last moment . Bit miffed about that , but at least we will rebook and maybe get some better weather than we have at the moment . My SSC shot has been a nightmare this week and at least there was one idea when I was away and now that has gone out of the window as well !!
Ok, I know it's supposed to be cowboys, but I think the similarities between truckers and cowboys are more than their differences. at least as far as attitudes and family life. Cowboy's were much tougher, in general, and lived under much more difficult circumstances. Took this shot from the brake check area off US-95 in Idaho just before the last steep hill and a couple of miles from the Idaho Port of Entry and scale house. The roads were icy and new snow was falling. The truck in the picture was parked in front of me and had just taken off. He was hauling large PVC pipe.
If you listen to the song, just change cowboys to truckers in your mind.
