In a 2000 manifesto Takashi Murakami coined the term Superflat to describe a cultural shift toward the "extremely two dimensional" and the way that contemporary high and low culture increasingly “fuse into one.” To Murakami, Superflat was a worldwide phenomenon, but it seemed most present in anime, a genre of animation originating in the artist's native Japan. In this painting, Mr. Pointy - a Superflat character first introduced by the artist in sculptural form - floats above a sphere and a lotus platform; the shiny black background has a glossy surface reminiscent of a new car or another luxury commodity. While the figure looks like a fantastical cartoon frog, Murakami based his depiction partially on iconography from Mayan religion and Tibetan Buddhism.
