Manifesto for The Superblur Art Movement:
1.Superblur refers to a method of creating art using the definition of the word blur.
2.Thus the focus of the art will be to make the object or classification of the art unclear or less distinct .
3.Superblur will also focus elements that cannot be seen or heard clearly.
4.When photography is used with the elements of Superblur in mind. The camera will be manipulated or even be shaken to blur the picture and the aim is to produce images that are similar to abstract art in painting.
5.Instead of creating art for the sake of art, elements of art movements such as Superflat, Superstroke, Cubism and so forth, will be blurred in an attempt to create art that will be known as Superblur art.
6.The symbol that should be used in all Superblur art is the barcode.

CLONE X x TAKASHI MURAKAMI #17495 Astronaut (2022) by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami is an acrylic painting on canvas mounted to an aluminum frame, on view at The Broad.
Merging Murakami’s Superflat vocabulary with RTFKT’s CLONE X digital-avatar universe, the work presents a stylized figure with rainbow “teeth,” kaleidoscopic eyes, and Murakami’s iconic smiling flowers. The hyper-smooth rendering evokes 3D animation and NFT culture, blurring boundaries between physical painting and virtual identity while reflecting Murakami’s broader interest in how contemporary characters, branding, and digital aesthetics shape new forms of portraiture.
The Broad, a contemporary art museum anchoring Grand Avenue’s cultural corridor, opened in 2015. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Gensler, it is defined by its “vault and veil” concept: a honeycomb-like exterior skin filtering daylight over a column-free gallery that houses more than 2,000 works from the Eli and Edythe Broad Collection. The museum focuses on postwar and contemporary art, including major pieces by Jeff Koons, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Yayoi Kusama.
Hustle’n’Punch by Kaikai and Kiki (2009) by Takashi Murakami (Japanese, 1962) is an acrylic-and-platinum-leaf painting on canvas mounted on an aluminum frame, on view at The Broad.
The work saturates the field with Murakami’s recurring characters Kaikai and Kiki, whose oversized, hyper-expressive faces float among dense clusters of smiling flowers. Their cartoonish features—wide mouths, spiraling eyes, and bouncing energy—are rendered in a crisp, graphic style associated with Murakami’s Superflat movement, which collapses distinctions between high art, manga, consumer design, and commercial production. The surface reads as a continuous plane of pattern and pop exuberance, masking an undercurrent of manic intensity that runs through the composition.

Hiroshige’s 100 Famous Views of Edo: Japonisme Reconsidered — Moon Pine, Ueno (2024–25) by Takashi Murakami (Japanese, 1962) is an acrylic-and-glitter painting on canvas mounted on an aluminum frame, on view at The Broad.
Murakami reinterprets Utagawa Hiroshige’s celebrated Moon Pine from 100 Famous Views of Edo, filtering the ukiyo-e landscape through his Superflat vocabulary. The composition expands Hiroshige’s iconic curving pine into a monumental pop-cultural remix, fusing Edo-period woodblock aesthetics with digital smoothness, saturated color, and shimmering glitter. By collapsing historical reference, commercial polish, and contemporary visual density, the work highlights the long feedback loop between Japanese printmaking and Western modernism—then reclaims it on Murakami’s terms. The result is a hybrid landscape where tradition is preserved, exaggerated, and reanimated within a glossy, flattened surface.

Tan Tan Bo a.k.a. Gerotan: Scorched by the Blaze in the Purgatory of Knowledge (2018) by Takashi Murakami (Japanese, b.1962) is a monumental acrylic-on-canvas work mounted on board, on view at The Broad.
Murakami’s sprawling composition centers on his alter-ego Tan Tan Bo, a chaotic mutation of his iconic DOB figure. The surface is packed with biomorphic forms, cartoon eyes, spiraling linework, and dense clusters of superflat ornamentation, all rendered with Murakami’s trademark fusion of anime aesthetics, commercial graphics, and Edo-period visual motifs. The work channels an overwhelming sense of psychic overload: Tan Tan Bo appears decomposed, reassembled, and electrically overstimulated, suggesting a figure engulfed by information, anxiety, and cultural excess. The intensely saturated palette and high-gloss finish push the painting toward a near-digital flatness, embodying Murakami’s commentary on spectacle, consumerism, and the instability of identity in a media-saturated world.
