Look through the stone to see double - Like these crossed white lines.
The stone splits light into two polararized rays having slightly different directions - hence the double vision. If the sides appear to be at peculiar angles, they are. Its shape is rhomboidal, rather like the pushed over and skewed box of some valuable purchase that couriers deliver.
'Iceland spar', so named from where it was first mined. A form of calcite or calcium carbonate.
It was possibly the fabled Viking “Sunstone” used by them to steer across the Atlantic in overcast weather. It locates the hidden sun's direction within a degree or so - it's true, I've tried it. More about the Sunstone

I decided to go for a hike in a peaceful forest until coming upon the soft sounds of whales. It sounded beautiful to everyone passing by, but of course I didn’t tell them I understood the calls since I can speak whale like Dory. I never thought I would be catcalled by humpback whales.

I'm going to try trapping tonight again. I didn't catch the cat I was after last night though he/she was there. It went into my trap again, but only about 2/3 of the way in. I will get it, sooner or later. I didn't lay a trail of bait, so I will try that tonight. Sometimes they need a taste of the food to entice them that last bit of the way into the trap....
Mr. Dusty Pixel's pic put me in a festive mood. It's time to post something colorful! These fabulous moulted scarlet macaw feathers were provided by MaMa, courtesy of SunStones! I sent them (with some of my bird's feathers) to a Hopi kachina carver to use for decoration of his carvings.
(I just opened the envelope and the purple tissue that the feathers were wrapped in and ran to get a photo immediately. I thought these feathers were so wonderful!!)

A Portuguese Water Dog pauses at the water's edge as beachgoers drift through the golden haze of a Pillar Point sunset, their silhouettes stretched long across the sand beneath the towering sandstone bluffs.
One of the more fascinating focused-stacked mineral sphere macros I've shot thus far, this image brings to my mind the surface of the sun, or lava exploding from a lake of fire... This came from my Cobra Jasper sphere.
Also, given the abstract nature of this image, I find I see a lot of faces there, some of them could come right from a horror movie... The name for this is Pareidolia which is where the brain tries to make sense of an image and to impose structure and order to it ;)
As usual, this was taken using the Cognisys Stackshot. About 40 images stacked and merged using Helicon Focus and processed in Lightroom and Photoshop with tender love ;)

One of my most regal designs this season, the Scarlett necklace is a luscious berry-red piece. It is comprised of a long handmade chain of faceted ovals of vibrant Cabernet red garnets, champagne Oregon Sunstone and shaded natural Zircon. The pendant of the piece contains a 16 carat drop of finely faceted Ametrine which glows in a golden champagne hue - or a pale lilac-lavender - depending on which angle it is viewed from. Within the pendant is the true gem of this piece. It is a 18K oxidized solid white gold fluted ball. The Art Deco ball is 16mm in size, and has been set with Pavé Diamonds. There are an impressive two-hundred and sixty four diamonds in all, or a total weight of two carats within the ball. Rough, raw silver Diamonds, golden pearls, Whiskey Quartz, more Zircon and Oregon Sunstone with plum-purple Garnets accent. A sterling silver toggle finishes the piece; a sterling silver signature tag adds the final touch. The collar of the piece has a lovely drape at 29" in length, the pendant is just over 2" long.

I took this photo of the Sunstone Winery for an article in Behind the Wines. A wonderful family owned winery near Santa Barbara, California. It's styled after a winery in Provençe, France.
Added the blur effect in Photoshop. Do you think I should burn in the edges a bit?
The original version of this was posted yesterday, and the very 1st comment was from my Flickr Friend, Maria, A.K.A. SunStones. She said she has a vision for this one and did I mind if she did a little post-production on it. I said sure, have at it. Well, she did and this is it. We both feel it has that real Rembrandt Vibe going on. Good work, Maria.

The strange appearance of white dust that began to coat Sunstone Pass, and rumors of explorers and scouts going missing amongst the mountain, sparked rumors and fear.
One such rumor was of a huge giant that roamed the mountain, leaving snapped trees and sundered earth in its wake.
It was mere rumor until one pair of explorers came face to face with the creature.
Only one returned, with the horrifying explaination for the fine white ash of the pass.
It was bone. Bones of the unfortunate souls who encountered this mountain giant, smashed and pulverized until they were nought but sprinkled white amongst the mountainside.
People abandoned the mountain, lest they run across the giant, now known as Tor'vag, and find themselves strewn across Stonesun Pass.
Mt. Aktet has not been scaled since. It and the pass belong to Tor'vag now.
