In January 2022, I asked for help, and a Flickr support hero removed both of my accounts from the Explore algorithm. I feel more relaxed and my jaw no longer hurts ;-)

I remember taking a bunch of cool cloud photos a few years ago along I-10 in Louisiana. This is one of those.

a little over four feet I think. This snake crawled up a branch on a log in the water to take advantage of the heat. I frequently see them swimming in the area.

HMM- the #macromondays theme for 7/19 is #sunsafety and this one fits the bill. Had one other that I’ll post next in the photostream.

Bella liked playing with this but luckily I don’t have to put it on her! Years ago my white cat Charlie had to have sunscreen put on his ears during sunny weather - he always allowed me to do it but washed it off as soon as he could.

Happy Caturday.

Though their hide looks tough, elephants have sensitive skin that can get sunburned.

To counteract the damaging rays of the sun, elephants throw sand on themselves. Adult elephants will also douse youngsters with dust. When coming out of a bath in a river, elephants will often throw mud on themselves as a layer of protection. And when calves are sleeping, adults will often stand over them to cast shade and protect them from the sun.

Macro Mondays-Sun Safety

Mud bathing is a vital act for the survival of elephants in their natural habitat. By covering themselves with a thick layer of mud, they create a natural sunscreen that protects their sensitive skin from the sun's rays. In addition, this same layer serves as an effective barrier against insects, and as the water in the mud evaporates, it helps to regulate their body temperature, keeping them cool in the heat.

I inadvertently had sunscreen on the lens here. So I cleaned it off and retook the photo. When I looked at the two shots I found this soft image more intriguing than the totally focused one.

Little did I know that this would be my second to last hike in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado for at least two weeks. The privilege of living in this beautiful area definitely has its perks as a landscape photographer but like with most things, there are some disadvantages.

The very thing that helps make our photos so beautiful can also harm us. My years in the field have caught up with me. Dreaded skin cancer has recently introduced itself to the side of my face (Basal Cell) and the upper forehead (precancerous). I hate any type of cancer especially the type that took my dad from this world at such a young age. I’m finding out I am not alone as many others exposed to nature have experienced this as well.

I am pretty good about wearing a big hat and plenty of sunscreen now but this wasn’t the case in my younger years. I hardly even knew what sunscreen was back then. Regardless, I was scheduled for a routine procedure to remove the cancer. The forehead went off without a hitch but the side of my face had other ideas. Later that evening after the procedure a vessel burst and that pretty much ended my time in the field for the next several weeks. The doc did a good job keeping the swelling under control which included a no hiking restriction. This was torture especially since it was in the peak of the wildflower season.

Several weeks later, I am now able to hike lightly and can’t wait until being able to resume full activity. This has taught me to never take my experiences in the field for granted as I never know when that opportunity can suddenly end. Of course I will be more religious than ever about protecting myself from the sun. I brought this up hoping younger photographers here might take heed and start early with protection, especially on your face where it really counts…

Thank you for viewing this shot and wish you only the best out in the field…

Elephant trunks are extremely multifunctional and can be used for a huge variety of different activities, including eating and drinking, grabbing, holding and pushing, etc. An elephant on the sandy river edge of the Tarangire River sprays sand onto its back with its trunk. The sand functions as a sunscreen against the hot African sun and also as an insect repellant. Tarangire National Park, Tanzania. (converted to black and white)

The best SunSmart steps:

1 Slip on covering clothing. Choose clothing that covers as much skin as possible, for example, collared shirts with long sleeves...

2 Slop on SPF 30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen...

3 Slap on a hat...

4 Seek shade...

5 Slide on some sunglasses...

Why Is Sun Protection Important?

We all need some sun exposure. When skin is exposed to the sun, our bodies make vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium for stronger, healthier bones. It only takes a little time in the sun for most people to get the vitamin D they need (and most vitamin D needs should be met with a healthy diet and/or supplements).

Too much unprotected exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause skin damage, eye damage, immune system suppression, and skin cancer. Even people in their twenties can develop skin cancer.

How Do Sunburns Happen?

The sun radiates light to the earth, and part of that light consists of invisible UV rays. When these rays reach the skin, they cause tanning, burning, and other skin damage.

UVA rays cause skin ageing and wrinkling and contribute to skin cancer, such as melanoma (the most dangerous form of skin cancer). UVA rays pass easily through the ozone layer, so they make up the majority of our sun exposure.

UVB rays are also dangerous, causing sunburns, cataracts (clouding of the eye lens), and effects on the immune system. They also contribute to skin cancer, and melanoma is thought to be associated with severe UVB sunburns before age 20.

UV rays react with a chemical called melanin that's found in skin. A sunburn develops when the amount of UV exposure is greater than what can be protected against by the skin's melanin. The risk of damage increases with the amount and intensity of exposure. A tan is itself a sign of skin damage and does not help protect the skin.

California sea lion

The California sea lion is a coastal-eared seal native to western North America. It is one of six species of sea lions. Its natural habitat ranges from southeast Alaska to central Mexico, including the Gulf of California. California sea lions are sexually dimorphic; males are larger than females, and have a thicker neck, and a protruding sagittal crest.
