The Society of United Fisherman Lodge #1 in Heart's Content, Newfoundland. The society, formed I the mid 19th century in Heart's Content was an organization to support fishermen and their families in times of need. This was the first lodge, with many more being built in the area over the following years.
The Society of United Fishermen Lodge SUF #1 is a one storey, mansard roof, lodge building prominently located in Heart’s Content. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building.
Heritage Value
The Society of United Fishermen Lodge SUF #1 has been designated a Registered Heritage Structure by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador because it has aesthetic, social and historic values.
The Society of United Fishermen Lodge SUF #1 has aesthetic value because it is a good example of an early lodge building in outport Newfoundland. Founded in 1873 this mutual benefit society and fraternal order building was constructed as a meeting hall for members. The one storey structure has a mansard roof and an unadorned appearance. The simplicity of the building is broken by arched gothic windows and a triangular gable end window high above the wood plank main door. Directly above the main door is an arched sign with the organization’s triangular shaped logo and motto. The triangular shape was chosen to represent Newfoundland’s approximate shape. Within the triangle appears the Maltese Cross, symbolically representing the eight Beatitudes, which members are taught to learn and observe. The motto adopted for the society was Love, Purity and Fidelity represented by the colors red, white and blue, respectively. These colors are reflected on the exterior trim with white being the predominant color.
The Society of United Fishermen Lodge SUF #1 is socially valuable because it provided fellowship and established a mutual support system for its members at a time when there were few services available to fishermen and their families. The building was designed by the SUF founder, Rev. George Gardner, and was constructed by members offering free labour and materials. The duties of the officers involved providing community aid in the forms of attending to the sick and bringing water and wood to those who needed it. They provided money and support for funerals to deceased members and their families which were made available through the collection of annual fees. The SUF also involved itself in projects to benefit individual communities through fundraising and charity work.
The Society of United Fishermen Lodge SUF #1 has historic value because it is the founding lodge for the society that, at its peak, included 79 chapters in Newfoundland and 3 in Nova Scotia. The SUF is the only fraternal organization of its kind to have its roots in Newfoundland.

I attended the May 1st celebrations in my home town Aarhus, Denmark. The main speaker was the Danish prime minister, Helle Thorning Schmidt.
She was met with loud booing and whistling from a large quantity of the crowd as a reaction on some unpopular reforms, including a recent one for the Danish school teaches, which will probably mean that a number of the have to teach more lessons each week.

As soon as the Urus of Makhdoom Shah Baba ends , the Urus of his devoted disciple and companion Fakhruddin Shah Baba begins also at Mahim.
Makdoom Shah Baba in his life time had bestowed a boon on Fakhruddin Shah Baba , that those who wanted to visit his tomb must pay respect first to Fakhruddin Shah Baba , so all the sandal processions that came to Makhdoom Shah Baba had to circumvent through this Shrine situated on the main heavy traffic road of Mahim.
Its a small Shrine , in cramped surroundings but highly respected by the locals of the area. Its all lit up for the Urus .
The Chancawalli Rafaees also make this place their next haunt , the Holy Fire or Dhuni is set up, and Handi and Marshad Baba hold court.
Sher Ali Baba is not around for this do.
Food is cooked on the Dhuni, supervised by Barsati or Maun Baba..
Tea Sufi style with lots of butter thrown is an appetiser to the rounds of chillum, heavily laden with Bombay Black hash. The burning down of Manala village does not affect the supply of this narcotic. Most of the affluent Bawas have connections with drug suppliers so you might get a taste of Afghani too, or Peshawari weeds..
I met a Naga Sadhu who is known as Langoti Baba, from Haryana , very highly educated and who is also a Sufi.. a rare heady combination..he is a mystic and stays at Haji Malang in the caves .
Farukh Baba and Don Jaun Baba with their good looks and full open hair are the most popular rafaees , none to beat them in swordmanship skills .
Shahenshah Baba too is a master craftsman at body piercing.
So today at about 6 pm I shall leave my shop to shoot the sandal.I shot it last year too, but had to abort it as I went into a trance known as Kaif..
Had to be revived when they splashed rose water on me and Shahenshah baba uttered some Koranic verses..
I than left for home.
As the lane this procession passes by to reach Makhdoom Shah Babas Shrine and back to its place of origin is badly lit the pictures are not too appealing either.
Hassan Ganda was in a very introspective mood , a lot of people who don't know me at the Dhuni think I shoot pictures of the Bawas and sell them in the international market, but most of the Bawas know its my fascination for their life style and their spiritual adventurism ..I dont even give prints to people whose pictures I have shot, the only exception was Heena Hijda the prostitute transgender from Peela House I gave her 100 copies - she deserves it , for allowing me to shoot her in the notorious Mumbai Red Light Cages.
So whenever someone talks ill about me its Hassan Ganda who takes up cudgels and stands up for me.
This is a dangerous zone of the mind , most of the Bawas and the guys around are high on dope, its a non stop round of chillums.
So the nerves are frayed , now if I paid for the dope instead of the money I give to buy milk for the tea I would be easily accepted by all.
I don't do drugs or drinks so I don't encourage this at all.
A lot of guys who hang around the bawas are unemployed washed out , drug addicts, here they get free drugs and free food and tea so from evening till late night this gathering continues.
The rich patrons bring in the hash and the cash, these are builders, loan sharks, drug lords, that is why I don't shoot them or include them in my picture frame, this is one of the reasons I am protected , and above all these guys know I am under the patronage of Handi Sai, Amanat Ali and Barsat Bawa who call the shots here.
The upkeep of the Dhuni requires money..so the Rafaes are hired for their acts by various sandals that come to Maqdoom Shah Baba..this brings in a fairly good amount.
Women are a taboo, and strictly not allowed at the Dhuni, the women stand on the periphery take their blessings from afar...
I take pictures I move away..now the Urus will get over in a day or two, the entire jing bang will move on the Mahim main Road at the Dargah of Fakhruddin Shah Baba.
This is a very small Shrine but is connected spiritually to Maqdoom Shah Baba.
Munna Bhai the decorator of this Shrine has gone for Haj , he takes care of this Holy Shrine along with the other members of the Dargah committee.
What I really want to shoot is the area near the side entrance to the Dargah where the ladies possessed by evil forces or demons, stand, moving their bodies , shaking their heads , but it has got stricter of late and the cops sit close by..
I did manage to shoot a possessed man carrying the sandal on his head.. last evening. Here again , there is no pictorial etiquette , no composition, it all happens too fast..I also do not work on my pictures keeping the spiritual aura intact..I try not to play God..
Hassan Ganda is known as Ganda as he has lifted a 50kg boulder with his penis..
During the Urus which is almost an all night affair, people first have fun at the Mela or Fair than come to pay their respects to the Holy Saint Maqdoom Shah Baba , than they go towards the other smaller shrine on the main Mahim road , that of Fakhruddin Shah Baba , where this picture has been shot.
The guy is the quintessential Masseur of Mahim, he sits with a foldable stool , and some quaint bottle of body oil, the main one being mustard and coconut oils.
His clientele is exclusively male and starts at night till the early hours of dawn.
He charges about Rs 5 as starters for a head massage, Indians specially the Muslim variety is hot blooded and hot headed too.
Than the price varies depending on the exterior appearance of the client.
Full body massage is mostly on the Mahim beach front starting from Rs 75 ...you remove all your clothes keep on your shorts and the masseur gets to work..
Mostly the hardcore punters or druggies , prefer little boys for this body and soul satisfying adventurism..the little boys have soft hands are adept at giving relief at the right places , all this without any sensuality or overt innuendos..
Once long time back it was the lady boys of Girgaum Chowpaty who were known for giving more than a body massage..but the cops drove them out from here..they my exist in small numbers..homosexuality is something no man or government law can kerb..
It has existed from time immemorial with gay teachers gay Santa Claus..all this under the guise of social legitimacy...
Well I digress back to the Masseur of Mahim, most of the masseurs are itinerant flocks not necessarily from Mahim but come from the North just to cater to the crowds and make good money as Mumbai is generous..
At the Dhuni of the Chancawalli Rafaees too you will find masseurs...
I have however not seen the little kids I shot a few years back.
I was again at the Mahim Dargah , today being the last day of the Maqdoom Shah Baba Urus...It was absolutely jam packed...
