Amadeus, written by Peter Shaffer and directed by Ian Higham

Putney Arts Theatre

Tuesday 14 – Saturday 18 November 2023, 7.45pm, main stage

Matinee: Saturday 18 November, 3pm

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The most celebrated composer of his age. Once a child prodigy and now – in 1781, aged 25 and newly arrived in Vienna at the court of Emperor Joseph II – an infantile, potty-mouthed genius!

To court composer Antonio Salieri, this 'creature', blessed with a remarkable gift for music, is an abomination. A mockery of all he has ever believed in. An asinine joke played upon him by a cruel God, and a monstrosity that must be destroyed.

Amadeus, one of the great plays of the 20th century, is Peter Shaffer's masterpiece, a majestic exploration of rivalry, jealousy and revenge. First seen at London's National Theatre, before opening in triumph on Broadway, it later became a hugely successful film, winning eight Academy Awards.

Amadeus is a riveting, must-see story about the difference between talent and true virtuosity; and a sublimely operatic, darkly engrossing take on music, madness and…whisper it... murder.

My first memory of an open air market was when I was 3 years old, in Mexico City. This picture came the closest to that experience. A brief respite, a deep breath, a flick of the hair, and the vendors were ready for the next customer. I fell in love with this lady as she prepared her defenses for the next customer. I pray that she sold her quota for a successful day.

Each summer, students who have successfully completed their first year of studio and course work in the MFA in Visual Studies Program plan and execute a group exhibition showcasing selections of their works produced in the last academic year. The exhibitions are interdisciplinary in nature, fitting the spirit and mission of the program itself. From the students:

"The first year of candidacy in PNCA’s Visual Studies program is intense. Throughout the past year these artists have worked it, gutted it, lived it, killed it, nailed it, and delved into it. We worked through mediums, attitudes, and philosophies, with experimentation as key. That is why we decided to call our show The First Cut Is the Deepest. This group exhibition represents a wide range of disciplines, distinctly different approaches, and a broad variety of motivations and influences." Artwork and Performance by: Tim Stigliano '12.
