They did not really hide their presence and their attacks were too clumsy to be successfull. As they were still fed by the parents they had time to fine tune their hunting skills.
This female juvenile looked already powerful and her talons were very impressive.
I did not see an adult.

Fly on a flower. I have been trying to determine the fly species but was not very successfull. It looks close to Baccha Elongata but I am not 100% sure..
In het heerlijke avondlicht net voor de poorten van Hazeboruck kregen we als laatste trein van de dag de meest speciale!
De "TDGR numéro 5" (TDGR = Train Désherbeur Grand Rendement) kwam ons een bezoekje brengen op de rit van Béthune naar Dunkerque-Grande-Synthe met aan kop en staart een locje van de reeks 69400 (aka 'Mouettes' (in het Nederlands: meeuwen) - toepasselijk wel, zo dicht bij de kust)!
We kunnen dus zeker van een geslaagde uitstap spreken, al viel de ene of andere treinen wel in de wolken :-)

The French weedfree train is seen in Hazebrouck whilst running from Béthune to Dunkerque-Grande-Synthe.
This was the last train we photographed that day. One surely can see that our excursion was quite successfull, although a couple of trains were victims of clouds, but hey, in Belgium, it had rained almost all day ;-)

The longer days of the year make after-work photography sessions worthwhile. Typically I visit only one location then, for some oldschool sitting and waiting what comes by. I spent a successfull evening in Beveren on the branch line that comes from the port (left river bank), right before it connects to the main line to Gent. Of the three trains I saw here, I like my photo below here best.

A shot from a very successfull phototour on the south coast of Iceland in early december. Photographer Elroy David captures the last remaining light on the peaks of Hrútfjallstindar, in foreground is the frozen lagoon of Svínafellsjökull glacier.
In the next weeks I'll be guiding phototours in this location among other spectacular glacier view in the low light conditions in Iceland.

I just returned back home from leading a very successfull 12 day photo tour in Iceland, with my friend Örvar Atli and group of talented photographers from Australia, USA, Canada and Netherlands. On this tour we had two long days/nights at the Glacier Lagoon and black beach with stranded ice, a location with endless photography subjects.

Però senzillament som un altre grup de visita al fort de Salses, i passem a 5 metres d'ells... amb un buit de dos pisos entremig!!
El fort de Salses és un molt important exemple de fortificació de transició entre l'època medieval i l'època moderna. Fou construit per Ferran II d'Aragó com a defensa de la frontera nord de Catalunya en front els francesos. Es construí sense reparar en despeses entre el 1497 i 1503, substituint el ja antiquat castell medieval (les restes del qual encara estan uns 500m al nord). Realment tingué una historia militar prou moguda, amb setges el 1503, 1639, 1640 i 1642. Els 3 darrers fou conquerida, però després de llargs setges.
Amb la signatura del desgraciat i maleït tractat dels Pirineus, el 1659, Salses perdé la seva importancia estragègica, i els francesos el reconvertiren en guarnició de reraguarda, polvorí i presó.

Since 1996 Taptoe Delft is back in Delft as a very successfull ‘Civilian Taptoe’ and in the meantime has become one of the best Taptoe- events of the Netherlands. Various facets contribute to this, like national and international participants of great excellence, the historical market place of Delft as decor, special image- and lighteffects, the supreme quality of the sound, and each edition we bring the audience a show with a new topic.
Went for a shopping spree in Italy and when returning home and passing Rabelj, I just couldn't drive pass this one!
My previous shot from the same location is actually the most successfull image of mine on Flickr, today it has 833 comments and 272 favorites!
This time I did a totally different processing, I tried with a vertorama (discovered the technique just now) and then I added some sepia to give it a more dramatic feel to it.

For fifty years, this polish restaurant has woven itself into the fabric of Old Montreal. Stash Café is a traditional restaurant with a timeless menu, faithful to the secrets of the polish kitchen.
Although it was founded in 1972 by Stanislaw Pruszynski, after whom the restaurant is named (Stash being short for Stanislaw), it has been owned and managed by polish women since 1978. What was at the beggining a modest flea market where artists and artisans would gather, rapidly became a successfull restaurant. Requiring a larger venue, the restaurant moved to 461 St-Sulpice, in the shade of the Notre-Dame Basilica.
After a historic building next to the restaurant was levelled by a fire, Stash Café relocated with all its convent furnishings to this lovely corner in the quieter sector of Le Vieux. Now a well known establishment where music, comforting food and family atmosphere charm the hearts of locals as well as tourists.
My first trip to London was very successfull how you can see :)
It was so awesome! The driver gave so much gas that flames came out of the exhausts :O

El fort de Salses sempre m'ha fascinat. La de vegades que el vaig veure tot passant per l'autopista vers el nord, deixant enrera Catalunya pocs quilometres després. Ja fa anys que el vaig poder visitar un parell de vegades, però ara hi he pogut tornar amb diverses càmeres per recrear-m'hi a plaer.

My trip to Norway was almost one year ago now and I still got so many photos left that I need to edit and show you :)
This is a different perspective from one of my most successfull flickr pictures from 2020:
In february I did successfull photo tour to north Iceland, guiding three talented photographers to the frozen world in the north. We traveled on a super jeep to some distant locations as Dettifoss and Aldeyjarfoss which are not so accessible in winter, did some easy hiking on Hverfjall and aurora hunting at night. It's amazing to be in these locations in winter, far from all trafic and stress.

In 1914 Mercedes-Benz would make a triumphant return to successfull Grand Prix racing. That year Mercedes raced a 115HP double seater with the superior engineering. Previous aircraft engine design gave Mercedes valuable experience in lightweight construction. They particularly applied this knowledge to the devleopment of the 4.5-liter engine. The result was exceptional power-unit which excelled in several areas.
For the valvetrain, Mercedes used four valves per cylinder. This made the 1914 GP car, the first DaimlerChrysler product to feature two exhaust and two intake valves in a single combustion chamber. Such a setup allowed the engine to revolve safely at 3200 rpm. During the period, this was the only car that could achieve a redline over 3000 rpm.
The 115HP was conservative in design. Unlike some of the competition there was an absense of front brakes and only one overhead camshaft. The simplicity of the car let Mercedes focus more on reliability with strong construction materials and methods.
With their potent package, Mercedes won first, second and third in the 1914 French Grand Prix held at Lyons. After the Lyons victory one of the cars was shipped to England for a showroom display. Shortly after delivery of car to England, World War One broke out. Immediately the car was turned over to Rolls-Royce for studing. This very car had had huge influence on the Rolls Royce Hawk engine which was made after the study.
Indeed Mercedes develeped the superior engine in 1914. The powerplant proved itself so good in competition that eventually the British would copy the design to aid the war effort.
I could not be happier to become an oneesan again, every time a new maiko debut, it falls a great responsibility on my shoulders ( and any senior alongisde me) to care and nurture this new maiko in her ups and downs, teach her right from wrong and make her life happy as a maiko, and a success when life throws lemons instead of sweet oranges. I hope to be the oneesan you deserve Kikuteru chan, a Geiko you can look up to and learn from, and a friend should the time come and you need someone to only listen, not judge. You have my best and most sincere wishes for a successfull career as a Maiko^_^

Setup shot here but this time I used a blue background, not black as shown in the setup shot.
I dropped the strawberry into a small spoon from a height of about 18 inches. Most of the times I missed, but occasionally I was successfull. The only way for the cream to make a splash is if the strawberry to land from a distance. The spoon contained "Single Cream" purchased from Marks and Spencers. It can be done with milk too, but I prefer using the cream.

For this kind of shot, it is imperative to use low flash power, even 1/16 is pushing it, but I don't dare raise the ISO to 400 as I'm using an Olympus DSLR :) - using power settings such as 1/4 will blur the splash.
The SB28 was triggered by the StopShot electronic trigger system. It was connected to the StopShot via PC Sync. The SB24 was triggered via a slave sensor. The flashguns were triggered during the exposure. They were synchronised with the strawberry dropping not by the camera.
I did this in complete darkness using BULB mode (1.5sec). Yes it was a big mess to clean up afterwards :(

El fort de Salses sempre m'ha fascinat. La de vegades que el vaig veure tot passant per l'autopista vers el nord, deixant enrera Catalunya pocs quilometres després. Ja fa anys que el vaig poder visitar un parell de vegades, però ara hi he pogut tornar amb diverses càmeres per recrear-m'hi a plaer.
El fort de Salses és un molt important exemple de fortificació de transició entre l'època medieval i l'època moderna. Fou construit per Ferran II d'Aragó com a defensa de la frontera nord de Catalunya en front els francesos. Es construí sense reparar en despeses entre el 1497 i 1503, substituint el ja antiquat castell medieval (les restes del qual encara estan uns 500m al nord). Realment tingué una historia militar prou moguda, amb setges el 1503, 1639, 1640 i 1642. Els 3 darrers fou conquerida, però després de llargs setges.
Amb la signatura del desgraciat i maleït tractat dels Pirineus, el 1659, Salses perdé la seva importancia estragègica, i els francesos el reconvertiren en guarnició de reraguarda, polvorí i presó.

The fort of Salses has always fascinated me. When I was young I saw it several times passing the motorway towards the north, leaving Catalonia a few kilometers later. I have visited it a couple of times, long ago, but now I have been able to return to it with several cameras to enjoy myself.
The fort of Salses is a very important example of a fortification of transition between the medieval and modern times. It was built by orders of Ferdinand II of Aragon as a defense of the northern border of Catalonia in front of the French. It was built without repairing expenses between 1497 and 1503, replacing the old medieval castle (whose remains are still 500m to the north). It really had a sufficient military history, with sieges in 1503, 1639, 1640 and 1642. The last 3 were successfull, but after long sieges.
With the signing of the unfortunate and cursed treaty of the Pyrenees, in 1659, Salses lost its strategic importance, and the French converted it into a rear garrison, powder store and prison.

I dropped the strawberry into a small spoon from a height of about 18 inches. Most of the times I missed, but occasionally I was successfull. The only way for the cream to make a splash is if the strawberry to land from a distance. The spoon contained Marks and Spencers Single Cream.

The 2 x SB28 flashguns were triggered by the StopShot electronic trigger system. They were connected to the StopShot via a Hama 3-way Sync adapter and about 1 million PC-Sync cables :)
The StopShot vendor is Cognisys (www.cognisys-inc.com).
I did this in complete darkness using BULB mode. Yes it was a big mess to clean up afterwards :(

I had wanted to do this photo for such a loooong time! And finally I got to do it in the photoshoot with Stefanie Zanon.
This is actually inspired by a drawing I saw long long ago, both the concept and title are "borrowed" from the work of Shira Sela. I don't usually do that, but I had been quite obcessed with this image...
So, for this photo I had wanted a white pidgeon... and I'd need help, or so I thought. So on sunday at around 9 a.m. I tried to wake my brother up, so he'd help me... that was of no use, he wouldn't get up. He woke up at 12:00 and we went to the central cemetery in town where there is a recently built dovecote (just a piece of useless information, I think someone was being funny with the choice of location for the dovecote, as in a reference for "Columbarium").
Inside the dovecote there were many pidgeons, but only one of white color... with a few black spots on the feathers. "Good enough" I thought. I closed the dovecote's door and the horror began... I felt like I were in a Hitchcock's movie, but instead of being beaked to death, I'd be sh*t to death. Luckily that didn't happen but from outside my brother was hearing my "aaaagh" screams and he was laughing his pants off. Har har har...
I managed to get the white pidgeon and as I was exiting the dovecote there came a person responsible for cleaning the place up. A conversation followed:
CAP: What are you doing?
Me: I ahn... mmmm am capturing a bird I need for a photoshoot...
CAP: are you doing to take it outside the cemetery?
Me: Yes, the photoshoot is at a farm
CAP: You can't. I won't allow you to...
Me: Why not?
CAP: Administration rules... if I hadn't seen you do it, you could get all of them, kill them, cook them, but since I've seen it, you can't...
Me:...
My brother: Well, you could go take a walk and pretend you didn't see anything, there is nobody else around here
CAP: I can't... I myself have killed dozens of these pidgeons, but I can't let you take one if I see you doing it.
Me: I'm not going to kill it, I will only take it, photograph it and I'll bring it back to you, give it right back in your hands...
CAP: I don't care what you do with the bird, you just aren't going to take it...
So my brother and I left, quite a bit frustrated... I had taken a cardboard box to put the pidgeon inside once it was captured and my brother thought it would be a good idea to use it to try to capture a pidgeon at a park... if we weren't successfull we'd be back at the cemetery after a few minutes, check if the CAP (cemetery a**hole person) was around, grab a pidgeon and be outta there.
Ok, we went to the park and tah-daaah... there was a beautiful fully white pidgeon eating popcorn someone had left there by a bench...
ever so slowly, taking tiny tiny baby steps I approached, with the cardboard in hands and my back bended (looking much like a crazy person). And by slowly, I mean really slowly. I took 10 minutes to get close to the bird, who was suspiciously keeping an eye on me. I got close enough and ZAZ!!!! I captured it!!! \o/ Victory!!!!
But I wasn't lucky still... I had taken a cardboard box much too big for my arms and I couldn't reach the darned thing... so my brother came to the rescue: "leave it to me... because I'm smarter... faster... my arms are longer... blablabla"... he puts his arm inside the box and the next thing I see is the pidgeon scaping from right under his fingers off to the big blue sky... I was most stunned, quite like the OMG cat
I said: "You let it scape!!! O.O" but my brother was just laughing at his goof and at my expression...
Off we went back again to the cemetery... my brother stayed outside. I told him: I'll get inside, grab the first flying rat I can put my hands on and we run! (Time was flying too, the photoshoot was scheduled for 2.pm. and we hadn't had lunch yet)
I got inside, grabbed a bird and in the distance I saw the CAP and swiftly walked away. I approached my brother: "Open the box! He's coming!! GO! GO! GO!!"

We got home, swallowed the food mother cooked and met with the Zanons. They saw the box and asked what was that for... I said: "a surprise for one of the photos we'll take" ;) but they heard noises inside and were a bit aprehensive hehehe
I told them of the adventure and they were laughing hard trying to imagine the saga...
We went to the farm, took the photos and then set the bird free. They even recorded the freeing of the bird on video just in case animal rights activists decide to come in hords for my neck. The bird wasn't hurt, just a bit stressed out maybe, but not hurt ;P
If they want to go for someone's neck, they should try finding the CAP...

We reached the summit in late afternoon, though still in good light thanks to the arctic spring.
Our trip to Lyngen in Troms resulted in a successfull attempt on Jiehkkevarri(1834m); the snow/ice covered mountain. The highest mountain in northern Norway! To reach the summit we had to cross the lower, but still very impressive Holmbukttind(1666m). We had a total climb of 2200m during the day. And some fantastic skiing on the return! Any backcountry skier/skimountaineer should try this summit if given the chance.

One of the oddities of the english language, as seen by a foreigner, is to name things not how they seem, but by some bloke who happened to invent something. The Ferris wheel is no more than a Riesenrad - giant wheel.
This mister G.W.G. Ferris jr happily invented on. Lesser known is this Ferris Rover, which wasn't successfull until the invention the Volvo contraption (known to the lesser world as safety belt) because even in low grav conditions the pilots felt a certain unease riding this marvel of enineering.
