Table planetarium, Hartog van Laun, ca. 1800 - ca. 1808

wood, brass, ivory.

The instrument maker Hartog van Laun designed a table planetarium in which the movement of the sun, earth, moon, and planets was demonstrated. He used the instrument in his lectures, but he only really reaped success with it when the Amsterdam professor Jan Hendrik van Swinden explained the planetarium in detail in Felix Meritis in 1802 and published about it.

Some of you will remember that in December 2014, I relocated several dozen Juniper shieldbugs when the trees they were residing in near the office were felled.

Well a few weeks ago, I went back to one of the locations where I'd released some, and was really thrilled to find a few, including this pair in cop! :-)

(Not a great shot as was shady...)

The strongest factor for success is self-esteem: Believing you can do it, believing you deserve it, believing you will get it. #success

Today I thought a lot about success.... I have always known what i wanted bigger picture wise for my business but I spent the day flip flopping back and forth between thinking I can do and thinking I can't. These days come and go, the days you think you have to throw in the towel and then there are the days (far more of these days) where you know you've got this because you're passion driven. Success happens one step at a time. It will take time, it will take even more hard work but when its what you live and breath, when its the epitome of who you are, when its your dream giving up is not an option. Its hardly even a real thought but self doubt can cloud your vision. You just have to remember that clouds break.

"asleep, passion is a smoldering ember; given air it is a white-hot fire. At its most modest, it feels like a gentle pang; at it boldest, it feels like a desperate need. It's why explorers explore, inventors invent, and painters paint. It's your key to success".

It's been said that the Pasadena Freeway (with similar 5 feet onramps as seen in this picture) was the first freeway, but I'm wondering if the original Bay Bridge was actually the first freeway. Like others, I've driven across this bridge so many times. Sometimes the success of getting from Point A to Point B was eventual, though. One of the most memorable times was during the El Nino of '83 when the rain was coming down in sideways sheets, the wind was gusting at 90mph. If there was an accident, you could be stuck for one or two hours as there is no alternate route once you are on the bridge. I'm not sure how the new Bay Bridge is going to help with those kinds of challenges, but at least it's supposed to be more earthquake safe even though they are making it happen with a temporary fix. I hope it works until the permanent one is ready. It's amazing how much the bolts that hold it together matter.

We're still not sure if the Barcelona trip to climb La Sagrada Familia was a success or not. One attempt Qx and myself made to scale the fence ended with us running through the tiny streets with angry Spaniard security guards in tow. We did manage to get up one of the cranes, but it felt a bit like a consolation prize.

Unfortunately this trip followed the infamous biscuits and orange juice evening in Paris and my nerves were a little fried... If only I had of been willing to do that rope swing... sorry about that Qx.

In other news, those who check pridian.net regularly (yes, all three of you) may have noticed that things have been pretty quiet lately. It's not because nothing has been going on, the opposite in fact. For the last 6 months life has been on the road, a state of being which is not conducive to updating websites. The good news is that I've been dragging my camera along every step of the way. From ship graveyards in Iran to the London underground and locations from all the countries in between; there are some pretty interesting things on the way. I'll even be dragging a few photos out of the secret squirrels folder, photos that have kept under wraps for almost four years...

There are also a few changes to the way this site is run. Originally I planned to post one photo every week to ensure only the best stuff goes up. That has resulted in a huge backlog of photos that I just can't bare to dump into the rejects folder. So I've decided to start posting photos on a more regular basis. Don't worry, I won't start posting every single out of focus photo that comes out of my camera. Just every now and then, particularly when I have more than one decent photo from a given location.

Anyway, we're back!

On this trip I finally made it to Great Dixter. After trying to get there without success by public transport on previous trips, I finally learned that the best way is by bus from Rye, a most worthwhile destination anyway, where I spent three nights last week. I got to the gardens on a perfect late May morning, the crowds were not bad at all, and I even got to meet Fergus Garrett, who took over the running of the garden when Christopher Lloyd died in 2006. I hope to start a set and put up a few more shots over the weekend.

For many years I have tried to photograph this laneway but with little success mainly because of limited space and poor lighting.

On Monday I purchased a Voigtlander 15mm which is an ultra-wide-angle lens so I decided to give it a try within the alleyway and here is one of the images. The lens is fully manual so it it is not easy to use without introducing high levels of distortion. White balance was another major problem.

Walking down Essex Street East it’s easy to miss the entrance to this hidden laneway, but for those in the know it is a handy shortcut between Temple Bar and Dame Street.

If you look down the dark laneway beside the Dublin Theatre Festival Office and you will see original artwork by Dublin street artist Maser ‘I’d Rather Trust a Dealer on a Badly Lit Street Corner, than a Criminal in a Three Piece Suit’.

If you are brave enough to walk down the lane you will see various items of street art and you will be surprised when this narrow lane opens out onto a small square, framed by the Olympia Theatre. Continue along the laneway by the side of the Olympia Theatre

and pass under the sign for Brogan’s Bar, before Crampton Court opens out onto Dame Street.

Anna Doran, a Dublin Street Artist, tried to re-invent one end of the lane as ‘Love Lane’. I have been a fan of Anna for a number of years ... ever since I saw her painted traffic control cabinet on Bolton Street. You can also some of her work on the walls of the "Hungry Mexican" restaurant in Bodkin's on Bolton Street.

Be aware that this laneway attracts some anti-social behaviour particularly in the lane on the Temple Bar side.

Love the Lanes is a joint initiative between Dublin City Council and the Temple Bar Company to pilot solutions and interventions to address issues in the laneways of Temple Bar. Over the years these lanes have fallen into disuse and have become magnets for anti-social behaviour. The stated goal is to reactivate these lanes for people to use and enjoy through creative intervention.

The project was launched on 21st March 2014 with an open call for new ideas. The response from the public was remarkable and shows that there is a real desire by the public to bring life back into the laneways in this historic part of the city. The main focus for the project was Adair and Bedford Lanes, Copper Alley and Crampton Court. 10 proposals were shortlisted and are being developed for implementation on the Laneways of Temple Bar with the support of residents and businesses.

A number of ideas were trialled in 2015 while others require financial investment and a longer timeline.

How do you define success?

Success isn't overnight. It's when everyday you gt a little better than the day before. It all adds up. #success
