It's me in this wonderful little steampunk workshop. I put on a special suit with mighty steam pipes, created for flying around and away ... :)

In the back there is a big wall picture of another steampunk lady, who used a similar suit for flying ... she was succesful ... and I was inspirated by this picture.

Until a year ago I hardly had any pictures of marsh harriers but that is a thing of the past after my travels through the Netherlands.

Normally you only see them floating in the air hunting for chicks and mice, but a few weeks ago in Eemnes (yes, yes) I was able to watch this specimen for hours in a newly mown meadow looking for mice.

And apparently it was a candy store, because he was succesful at least 5 times, and greedily gobbled one after the other (the life of a mouse is not easy, and is often short).

Other birds also joined the party (3 buzzards, 2 storks, 2 blue herons and 5 white herons). David Attenborough calls this a feeding frenzy.

Smailholm Tower stands atop a crag of Lady Hill in the Scottish Borders overlooking miles over the surrounding countryside, was built in the first half of the 1400s and it was succesfully holding against many attacks from the English armies throughout the 15th and 16th centuries.

The nearby privately owned farm, Sandyknowe, was owned by Sir Walter Scott's, the famous Scottish poet's grandfather. As Scott himself recognised, his imagination was fired by the ballads and stories he heard as a child at Sandyknowe, and by the ruined tower a stone's throw away.

In his old age, Scott described the powerful effect on his imagination of these border ballads and the sight of his ancestors’ ancient tower, “standing stark and upright like a warden”.

RKO_3882. How extraordinary is it to watch these beautiful and colorful little birds doing their fishing act!

MG -TD-Midget-RD

Year of construction: 1950

Cylinder capacity: 1.250 cc - 4 cylinder

Power ouput: 57 HP/ 43 Kw

Maximum speed: 130 km/h

Cruise speed: 90 km/h

Dual carburetor

4 - speed gearbox

The manufacturer of the MG was originally a dealer of the Morris Motor Company, and this dealer began independently producing sports cars in 1924.

The basis of which was to lower the chassis of a Morris Cowly while adding a sporty body.

With this design named "MG", an abbreviation of "Morris Garage" the manufacturer became synonymous with the term "sports cars" and this brand name was promoted through many succesful racing events.

Due to the enormous succes with their sports cars, MG outgrew its home for three times, but in 1935 all of the MG's holdings were sold to the car manufacturer "Moris Motor Company".

MG would never be the same after that as fewer new models were made and participation in racing was discontinued.

The real death blow to MG was inflicted by British Leyland which squandered the illustrious name in the 1970s because it only produced characterless cars and stopped putting the famous MG- emblem on their cars.

Since 2011, Chinese carmaker "SAIC- Motors" became the owner of the MG brand name, and in 2011 the characterless MG-MG-6 reappeared in the United Kingdom.

This was followed in 2019 by the MG-ZS-EV SUV, but this model is also one of a dozen in a dozen........

Day 19 of 20 of albums that influenced my musical tastes.

Seven - James

In 1992, my brother began to study Economics in the National University of Mexico. Soon after he started classes, the University went on a strike. My brother decided to change of School. In the mean time, he started to work in a record store. We share the same musical tastes. One day, he came home with a CD that it had just arrived to the store, from a band that we haven't heard before, mainly because alternative or “indie” rock music was not almost not played on the radio here in Mexico. The band was James, and the album was Seven.

The sound was quite different for us, with a fresh combination of trumpet, violin, acoustic and electric guitars, and clever lyrics, and we fell in love immediately with them.

This album was released today, thirty years ago, so I can say, James has been an essential part of the soundtrack of our lives. My brother graduated from another prestigious University and now is a succesful economist with a Ph.D., and although now we do not share all the same musical taste, we still have some great late night musical sessions.

This place is a real gem. The light, and not least the weather, out on the coast in Norway changes quickly. It creates fascination and drama. When the winter storms come, the waves can be 35 meters high outside at the lighthouse, which you can see far out on the horizon, where the sun meets the sea. The people who live out here have always been connected to the sea, as sailors, as fishermen and as whalers. Many ships have been wrecked here for hundreds of years. But not on good days like this one. The beautiful coastal landscape out here has been shaped by the sea and the waves, through an eternity of time. Enjoy):

EXPLORED # 479 on Sunday, August 21, 2011. Especially for you Mag!

This shot was taken during our first visit to Cornwall in 2021, after the pandemic restrictions were partially relaxed. Pictured on the right is the old engine house for the tin mine known as Wheal Prosper. Despite its name Wheal Prosper was not a hugely succesful mine, working for only six years between 1860-1866. It was intended to mine tin and copper from the Porthcew Lode.

The engine house is dramatically situated on the cliff tops of Rinsey over-looking Rinsey Cove and Porthcew Beach three miles from Porthleven in the south-west of Cornwall. Built of granite and killas slate taken from the local clifftops this engine house was home to a 30-inch pump. There were three shafts the most notable of which is the now capped Michell's Whim shaft measuring an estimated 420 feet in depth. The site has been under the stewardship of the National Trust since 1969.

In the far distance can be seen Penzance with Mousehole on the left.

Built by Alexander who was the Duke of Hamilton, he lived from 1767 to 1852, the structure was incomplete at the time of his death, he was later interred in the mausoleum on completion, he was fascinated with Egyptian history so was berried in a huge sarcophagus, he was the only member of his family that wasn't housed in the walls of the mausoleum but placed on a huge slab below ground level, the rest of his family were interred in the walls on a lower level to The Duke. He wanted a place where all his relatives could be together, in the 1920's there was subsidence due to water ingress from the river Clyde so all the family were relocated to a local cemetery as there was a risk of the structure collapsing, works were succesfully completed to save the structure. Before succeeding to the dukedom, he was Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Colonel of the Militia, and MP for Lancaster. He was later appointed Ambassador to Russia, and travelled extensively in Russia and Poland.

Beside the fact that humans release lots of bred mallards in nature every year this duck have several own adaptations that make them so succesful. One of these adaptation is there way of flying off from water when danger lures. Mallards are one of few aquatic birds that can take off without any "starting distance". In a split second they birst directly from the water to the air! This take off reminds of a launched missile!

I slightly missed focus on this shot but I like it anyway

The main target was a picture near Altstädten, where IC 2085 can be seen only a few miles away from Oberstdorf. After the earlier shown picture of IC 2013 near Memmingen, it was time to go back to The Netherlands the after a succesful week in Germany :) .

For some reason I never got around to posting more shots from Portugal from last winter. It was by far my most succesful trip this year, so time to change that. On a beautiful sunny day, retro blue CP 1413 leads IR 869 over the Ovil viaduct. This shot was a little harder to get than expected. The viaduct is easily accessed by a pathway to one of the houses, but the crossing was being guarded by a quite angry barking dog. After several attempts to find a way around I decided I wasn't going to miss the shot for such a stupid reason and just walked up there anyways doing my best to be the more intimidating one. The dog was very displeased by my continued presence but thankfully stayed on the other side of the track. The orange trees are an ever present sight along the Duoro and I ate more than a few while waiting in various spots....

But entering the Book Shop I see I have been far too optimistic...There are thousands of books, interesting and great for reasonable price...But you have find The Right Book yourself as they are not organised as you used to see in modern book shops. I spent 40 minutes and my break time was coming to end and then I met a gentleman who works in the shop and he kindly suggested me to visit the Warehouse which is located in other place...

But then I heard Paddington's cheerful voice...Seems he has been more succesful

Rutland Osprey fishing at nearby Horn Mill Trout Farm, Oakham, UK

Ospreys are migratory, those that breed in the UK return from Afrrica in the spring and summer months.

Ospreys became extinct in the UK in 1916. However following an attempt by a pair to breed at Loch Garten in Scotland, in 1954, succesful conservation work there, by the RSPB, has resulted there now being 300 pairs in Scotland alone.

However natural recolonisation elsewhere in the UK would have been very slow as returning males tend to build nests close to where they fledged.

Ospreys have been using Rutland Water as a stop-off during their migrations to and from Scotland for many years'

In 1996, a project began, which involved moving Osprey chicks from nests in Scotland and releasing them at Rutland Water with the aim to create a self-sustaining breeding population of Ospreys in central England.

In 2001, a male Osprey that had been translocated to Rutland Water Nature Reserve in 1997, raised a chick with a female from Scotland, close to the reservoir. . Today, over 200 young Ospreys have fledged from nests in the Rutland Water area since the first chick in 2001.

In 2018, long before I had any idea I would one day even temporary live in Vienna, I made my first visit to the Semmering Bahn. I had a few angles marked out as must haves and some sort of idea on how to get there. The first morning was less than succesful with much of it spent scrambling up the wrong hillsides and then after finding the right spot not having any trains. However the second morning I found the right trail and made it up to the high cliffs above the Kalte-Rinne in time for several morning trains, the highlight being the heavy Ore-Tainers which required the assistance of two 1142 class locomotives. Looking forward to trying out some more new angles that I have been eyeing all winter with the lengthening days.

-----

Last picture of the day was this one of a NIAG train heading north behind a black MRCE Taurus some couple of minutes before sunset.

We said goodbey to the Rhine and started our return trip to Belgium, with some traffic jams around Köln and just before Aachen (yes, the A61 was still blocked in northern direction).

We could look back to a succesful day: after the winter season we will sure return here ;-)

After the succesful hunt the northern goshawk protects the kill by spreading its wings over it, after a few bites it took off (unfortunately i missed this take off sequence), Biezczady Forest, Poland

A lot of surprise and enthusiasm followed ten minutes later, when yet another CLR train entered the curve, and this time it was one of the jackpots of CLR :) U-boat 229 181 runs between Köthen and Frenz with ERR tank cars for ethanol, with which we end the pretty succesful week in Germany here. The tree was still removed digitally.

I have a love hate relationship with this beautiful bird as I love her grace, her howl and the pure animal thunder of her 4 powerful engines. But the cost of booking her has quite probably been to the detriment of many other worthy airshow participants.

She is, however, very much missed and the years since have not been kind to the classic warbird scene since her retirement.

We live in hope that the UK airshow scene can turn a corner and regain some of its former glories, but alas that seems a far away dream... For now!!

fishing succesfully.

A moody day at the Cliff Walk in Newport, RI. I was attempting to escape the dark clouds and rain in the Boston area this past Saturday, but I was only partially succesful in avoiding it. However, it did clear up not long after this photo was taken.

I'll post one later on to show the dramatic transition.

Works best when viewed in large.

One week later this same bird was succesfully catching mosquito fish from the west end of Baldwin Lake.

The Defiance of a Stormchat.

0745.22.11.2025

Back in 2023 I did my usual photography/conservation work by visiting black redstarts each day in Manchester. I also visited a pair of stonechats each afternoon that were breeding on Holcombe Hill which is north of Bury. The male was, from the start, reasonably approachable. You could not chase it (not my style). I knew where it liked to perch so I put myself near its perch and waited for it to come close, I used a bit of camo to look less human. I put out live mealworms. The female was not tolerant of humans so for several days I simply kept low in a gully lying on my belly like a sniper. Over about three days it came closer and closer and eventually over a couple of weeks I earned its complete trust and eventually I could sit on a stool in reasonable comfort without her getting spooked. I visited and fed the birds each day no matter what the weather was like and on top of the hill it got very windy and when it rained it poured! (as you might see in this image). The male in this image has come for a feed and to collect food for young. There were 5 pairs of stonechats and a pair of wheatear that set up breeding territories on my side of the hill. All territories failed because of stoat/weazel predation or human disturbance. My stonechat pair had two succesful broods. It was a delight and a privilege to be so trusted by these birds and even when they were not being fed the adults and young hung around me like little sentinels. It was beautiful.

The 300 SL (Short for "superlight")production sports car presented in 1954 was based on the succesful competition version from 1952.Its racebred space frame weighedonly 110 lbs and was particularly strong but did no permit the fitting of normal doors because of the high frame side members. With its characteristic upward-opening doors, the dream car of the 1950´s popularly became known as the Gullwing. It was the fastest production car of this time.
