Substituting soft toys to try to make up for him not having litter-mates. He is a "big-boy" now, and has no more interest in his bottle! 😊

I was planning on doing a nice series on the attractive purple peninsulas of pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata) which occur around the lake, and set off in the canoe to do precisely that on a beautiful, sunny Saturday in the northwoods. Unfortunately, the winds kicked up after I departed, creating not only a bad day for photos of anything from the canoe, but also a bad day to be 66 years old as the breezes tested my mettle. (I'm not sure what a "mettle" is, but I am sure it was tested and hope it's not sore tomorrow.)

Thus you will have to make do with this spotted knapweed (Centaurea biebersteinii) which is not only also purple, but has the added peculiar distinction of apparently being named for Justin Bieber. Or perhaps the latter was named for the former. Either way, I would consider both highly invasive in their own right, and tho Justin would no doubt strongly disagree, I find the weed far prettier and recommend a taxonomical redo.

In Case, not blue enough.

These are more pollard willows whose trunk has been shortened as a young tree at a height of approximately 1 to 3 meters and whose branches are cut regularly.

Since branches of willows were often used as piles for the construction of fences, new plants emerged from these piles due to the enormous regenerative capacity of the willows. For this reason, pollard willows often occur (e.g. in the Lower Rhine area) in a row.

Today, there is now economic use of willows, as industrial substitute products have been established. This is why pollard willows are no longer cultivated nowadays.

Approaching Tunnel 1, the Rio Grande Ski Train marches up the Moffat Tunnel Subdivision east of Plainview, Colorado, on the morning of January 7, 2001. Pinch-hitting for ailing F40PH No. 242 on today’s train is Rio Grande GP40-2 No. 3105.

It is always nice catching the Union Yard/Midway Yard job when the usual 1824/1896 pair has gone to Northtown for refueling or inspection, etc., as the replacement power always seems to be something different. Back in mid-December it was an SD40-2R/SD75M combo that had the honors as they pulled a cut out of Union and headed over to Midway. Seeing one of the ex-ATSF ex-SD45-2s that are captive to Northtown is fun too. BNSF 1571 (ATSF 5702) was one of the five SD45-2s back in the day to wear the bicentennial scheme for a couple of years.

Goldfinches are in full bright yellow plumage now. I got out the camera to photograph them when this guy showed up. The finches can wait.

One of Paul Gauguin's most treasured possessions was a painting by Cezanne,Still Life with Fruit Dish, which he emulates in this picture.Within a similarly compressed space,Gauguin substituted mangoes for Cezanne's apples and a Tahitian styled print cloth for a French floral wallpaper design. One significant departure is the human figure in the upper right glimpsed through a door or window. The year after he completed this work Gauguin's finances were so dire that he arranged for the sale of his prized Cézanne.

The white poppy variety is very rarely cultivated. It is cultivated for the production of opium and morphine for medical purposes. In order to monitor cultivation and prevent its abuse outside medicine, cultivation is regulated by the authorities.

It is occasionally used as a nut substitute. The sweet, wonderfully nutty flavour is suitable for all sweet dishes, as well as for use in baked goods or to soften pasta sauces.

(I can recommend strudel or ice cream with white poppy seeds)

The white poppy has beautiful flowers and is a so-called blind poppy, where the capsules remain closed.

The Rio Grande Zephyr pauses briefly at its scheduled 8:25 p.m. stop in Provo, Utah on a pleasant April evening in 1975. At left, the usual gang of devoted fans were on hand to greet the train’s arrival, likely discussing the substitute power on the point of the train.

While #815 was on it's 92-day inspection back in February, former SP GP60 #1107 briefly filled in on the UP YPR60. With four cars from Blommer, the 60A rolls across Tower A2 interlocking, one of the last holdouts of CNW-style GRS searchlights in the Midwest.

"The Emperor is convinced that when it comes to truth and reality there are no substitutions or alternatives. Something is either truthful and real or it is untruthful and unreal. For this reason he regards mythology as falsity, metaphor as double-talk, and the arts as pretty little fallacies at best, or, at worst, abominable extravagances."

In the last months the DBS Br185.1s used along the Gotthard route had been withdrawed due to the ETCS implementation.

While some loks were working with SBB in domestic freight activities around Zurih Limathal, some Re10/10 were employed to haul also the DBS international trains from Basel to Chiasso.

Beyond the many mixed freight from Mannheim, also the "Winnerzug" Wuppertal-Piacenza had been entrusted to the Swiss loks.

Here the Re4/4.11183 and a Re6/6 are running just before the Biaschina Loops heading the southbound train. (30/10/15)

Two VIA Rail trains are at Brockville, Ontario on this day with no VIA power to lead. A Canadian National MLW RS-18 has varnish on the mainline while an EMD GP-9 hols on the lead to Smith Falls and Ottawa. I remember some sort of connecting trains that would make moves here. These might have been it. I believe a small engine house or facility was here to house the Ottawa power. These Ottawa trains eventually were LRC strongholds that came straight from Toronto.

As the IHB sees a sudden surge in traffic, two former NS GP38-2s are filling in at Gibson building autorack trains. IHB 5627 is seen here hard at work on the West end.

If you had to put a freight engine as a substitute on a passenger train, I doubt you could do much better than this. Rio Grande GP30 No. 3002, built by EMD for the D&RGW in April 1962, brings train No 18 to a stop to load passengers in Provo, Utah the morning of May 18, 1979.

Now class, my name is Mr. Winter and I will be your substitute teacher for the next few weeks.

Mushroom Soup

1 Tbsp olive oil

4 tbsp unsalted French butter

1 sweet onion diced

1 large shallot diced

6 cloves garlic diced

1 1/2 lbs. Mushrooms sliced (any kind you prefer or a mixture. I used a combination of Cremini and rehydrated dried Porcini)

1 tsp dried Porcini powder

1 tsp smoked paprika

1 tsp dried thyme

1/2 tsp oregano

1/2 tsp ground laurel

1/2 tsp white pepper

1 tsp sea salt

1/2 cup white wine

3 cups mushroom stock (substitute vegetable or chicken)

1/2 cup milk (can use heavy cream or crème fraîche)

1 tsp sherry vinegar

1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

In a large sauté pan, heat olive oil and melt butter. Sauté the onion and shallot until soft and translucent. Add garlic and cook for a minute. Add mushrooms and continue to cook over medium high heat. Stir in spices and seasonings. Once the mushrooms have given up their water and all has evaporated, deglaze the pan with wine. Turn of heat once the wine has reduced and the mixture has thickened.

Transfer the mushroom mixture to a large blender jar (2+ liter)

Add stock, milk, vinegar and Worcestershire sauce.

Carefully blend on low speed first, then increase to high or “Soup” setting - 7 minutes until steaming. Taste for salt. Serve with croutons and drizzled white truffle oil.

Be quite cautious blending hot contents, not all blenders can handle this and you could have a bit of an explosion; if needed, blend in smaller batches to avoid danger.

Bon appétit!

This Empire Builder left CHI with Charger 300 leading and this OLS unit trailing. Due to a malfunction, they were swapped out on the east side of Whitefish, Montana. Here, the train has finally made it into Whitefish depot and is doing it’s station work. I hope Amtrak purchased the extended warranty package on those Chargers?!
