By the 1850s, local parish schools in Armadale were at capacity and struggling to serve the needs of the local community after an influx of miners to the local area significantly increased the population.
The community decided to raise funds to provide their own school for Armadale. A subscription lists was sent around the community, including to local businesses. Subscribers included the Earl of Roseberry and the Monkland and Iron Steel Company. This deed box was used to keep the school's important documents including the subscription lists and other historic documents.

The Macclesfield Express newspaper is celebrating its bicentenary in 2011 and has just published a facsimile of the first edition of the Macclesfield Courier from which it has evolved over the years. In my collection of local ephemera are a number of invoices issued by James Swinnerton who was proprietor of the paper in the 1840s and 50s when it was published as the Macclesfield Courier and Herald. This example was sent to Mr Thomas Bullock of Sutton, a local silk manufacturer, invoicing him for his subscription to the paper. For eighteen months from June 1848 to December 1849 the cost was 33 shillings which is 22 shillings per annum. Today the paper costs 57p which is just slightly more than you would have paid for 6 months of issues in 1848!

Church of St. Thomas à Becket. Dodbrooke Devon,
The village of Dodbrooke could have derived its name from a Saxon thane called Dodda. Under Saxon law, no man could hold this office unless there was a place of worship on his land. This did not need to be a church: it was sometimes a wayside cross round which Christians gathered. The base of Dodbrooke's ancient wayside cross still exists, forming the base of the war memorial on the right of the church gateway.
If there was a Saxon church on this site, no trace of it remains.
The present building ,constructed of rubble stone with ashlar dressings under slate roofs, was built in the 15c, replacing an earlier Norman church.
There is reason to believe that this earlier church dedicated to Thomas A Becket, martyred in 1170, was built by one of his murderers William de Tracy, who owned land stretching from about a mile up the Totnes road to a little south of where the present church stands. The present church is Perpendicular in style, and consists of a chancel, nave, north and south aisles, and embattled west tower with six bells. The 14c tower was once topped by a spire, but this was removed in 1785.
The nave and south aisle date from c 1450 although the pillars and window tracery are simpler than some elsewhere because of the hardness of the granite from which they are carved. Each pillar in the southern arcade is a monolith and is said to have been brought from Hay Tor on Dartmoor.
The capitals of the pillars in the chancel are more ornate than those in the nave, and may be later, but their remarkable decoration reminds us that splendour increases as one approaches the altar. One of these capitals shows the Lacy Knot, the token of Bishop Lacy of Exeter who died in 1455, and thus gives a clue to the date of this part of the church. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/6115qKSk69
The north aisle was once owned & maintained by the Champernownes of Dartington who were Lords of the Manor for many years. In the 17c the family allowed the aisle to fall into disrepair and eventually it had to be pulled down. The rest of the building was however well restored .
in 1886 / 1887 the people of Dodbrooke seized the opportunity to rebuild the north aisle and luckily for them, the church of South Huish, near Malborough, had fallen into disuse and ruin and its pillars and arches were brought here to form the northern arcade. Although it fits in well, one can see that this arcade is different from that in the south. At about the same time the west window was brought from South Pool. The chancel was also rebuilt The ceiling of the south aisle was taken down at the same time, exposing the oak roof, which has some fine carving and bosses.

The late 15c / early 16c rood screen survives though partly destroyed in 16c , the central portion having been restored in 1897 by Harry Hems with the addition of a finely carved oak cornice, and a cross between angels over the central doorway. At the same time the north aisle portion was added. The cornice was copied from that in Combe-in-Teignhead church, and the angels from two on the reredos of St. Alban's Cathedral On the shields on the screens are recorded the names of all the incumbents of the parish from 1327 to modern times. . An organ was built in 1874 at a cost of £210, defrayed by subscription, &c.
A window in the aisle is filled with stained glass, representing the Adoration of the Magi, in memory of two members of the Pearse family; the north-west window is in memory of the Harris and Phillipps families.
The registers date: baptisms, 1725; marriages, 1727; burials,
1727.
The poor have £265. a year from Sir J. Acland's charity, and 20s. left by John Peter, out of the tithes of Cornworthy. The parish lands vested in 1640, for the reparation of the church, &c., comprise twelve tenements.

DALMENY WAR MEMORIAL.
Unveiling Ceremony by General Sir Francis Davies.
Enacted by public subscription, the Dalmeny War Memorial to perpetuate the names of the men belonging to the parish who fell in the Great War, was unveiled on Saturday afternoon General Sir Francis Davies, K.C.B., K.C.M.G., Commander-in-Chief of the Forces in Scotland in the presence of a large gathering.
THE MEMORIAL.
The memorial stands on a site situated in the centre of the village. It is in the form of a Mercat Cross, and of the finest Bullalo freestone. shaft rises from steps and plinth, and is surmounted by a lion rampant, supporting four shields with appropriate heraldic devices, the arms of Linlithgow, the cross of St Andrew, the Scottish Lion, and the Royal Arms of Scotland.
The memorial was designed by the late M'Gregor Chalmers, and superintended by his successor Mr J. Jeffrey Waddell, architect.' The sculptor was James Young, the builder Mr John Gumming (Glasgow), and the bronze tablet bearing the names of the fallen was supplied Messrs Hamilton (Glasgow.)
The number who voluntarily enlisted and whose names are on the Roll of Honour is 244, and the bronze tablet bears the names of the following 33 who made the supreme sacrifice :- J. Beveridge, R. P, Brown, J. Cameron, A. Campbell, R. Campbell, W. Campbell. R. J. Dickson, A. Halliburton, C. Johnston, C. J. Johns. J. Kennie, J. Livingston, J. Mackay, W. Mackay, H. M'Diarmid, J. M'Kinlay, R. Middleton, C. Nelson, W. Pearson, A. Ramage, J. Reilly, R. Robertson, W. Ronaldson, W. Russell, A. Rutherford, J. Scott, J. Smith. J. Swayne, W. Trotter, W. Turner W. B. Wales, J. Wilson. G, Young.
THE UNVEILING CEREMONY
The service opened with (he singing of Psalm 23, after which the lesson (11. Samuel 1., 17-27) was read by the Rev. E. Twidle. A short prayer was then given by the Rev. J. E. Keir, M.A., followed a few remarks by Mr John Dudgeon, J.P., who has acted as chairman the Memorial Committee.
The assembly was then addressed General Sir Francis Davies.
General Davies said thev did well to pay honour to the fallen, they had brought great honour to those who remained. The day must one of sad to many people present, but he asked those who had relations commemorated by the monument to believe him when he said that when they passed it they might hold their heads high. A little more than eight years ago the men now commemorated were living, there amongst them, most of them educated their schools and worshipping in their church. When the call came they did not. hesitate. They went forth and gave their lives. There was more to be done than putting up the monument. He asked them to remember those whom the fallen had left behind, and also those who had returned from the war and needed their help. They who put. up the monument were not likely to forget what it meant, but time went on the reason of the memorial might be forgotten. He asked, therefore, that the children should be taught how the call, when it was made, had been answered, and how they, if the call should come again, would have to the same. If that was done their comrades would not have died in vain, and their sacrifice would be an inspiration to generations lo come.
The names of the fallen having been read by Mr A. D. Walker, the memorial was dedicated the Rev. Dr Dunn, and thereafter the Dalmeny Pipe Band played "The Flowers of the Forest.” ami buglers sounded "The Last Post." A number of beautiful wreaths were placed at the foot of the memorial, and an Impressive ceremony terminated with the benediction being pronounced by the Rev. W. Bower Wilson. General Davies afterwards inspected a number of ex-service men of the parish.

On Sunday morning the new 1939 - 45 War Memorial Plaque was unveiled by Dr G. Dickson. After paying tribute to the fallen of both world wars, wreaths were laid by representatives of the British Legion, the Girl Guides, the Boy Scout movement and Dalmeny Publie School. The assembly then followed the standard-bearers to church, where the two minutes’ silence was observed and appropriate service was conducted by the Rev. Mr M'Gregor. The church was filled to capacity.

People always ask me what gave you the idea and what made you create these how to plumbing videos? Coming up with the idea was easy. After many years as a plumber and servicing customers at there home I've seen a lot of people in tuff situations, people that could not afford a plumber, people that didn't have time to wait for a plumber to come to there home and make repairs, hearing horror stories of Plumbers that have rip off costumers and gave bad service, to me this was a loud cry for help. One story come to mind; A friend of mine calls me and ask, PlumberX could you do me a favor and help this older lady that I know, and go by and look at her Plumbing, she needs plumbing work really bad but she's to scared to call a plumber because of the cost, and she know that if I send you over there to check out the plumbing she can trust me as a friend recommending you, sure I said I could do that. The next day came and I went to the older lady's home she came to the door with a pleasant smile very humble. I could see it in her eye's she didn't have to say a word ( What is this going to cost ) she was very polite and courteous. Sir would you like some thing to drink and I do appreciate you coming to check out my plumbing on such short notice. No problem mam, lets see what's going on here with your plumbing. This way Sir in the kitchen. As I walk through the home I saw in the corner of my eye younger children around 3, 5 and 6 years of age running around the house I'm sure they were her Grandkids; right away I knew they also stayed there and grandmother seem to have her hands full. I would say it's safe to say that grandmother was helping raise them or she was doing it all alone. Yea I'm a softy, seeing all this going on before I even seen the plumbing problem just made me thankful of my situation and hoping that I could help her out, and maybe just for that day I could give her a chance to catch her breath and take away some of the worries she had going on.
