Going thru more of my parents closets. Some silly looking hair! Must have been a reaction to all the long hippy hair of the 60s?

Yesterday I attended the 2010 Meadowbrook Concours d'Elegance in Rochester Hills, Michigan and as usual, the show did not disappoint. There was a large collection of classic automobiles of all vintages, styles and ages. This image above shows the hood ornament of a 1935 Packard Model 1405 Phaeton by Dietrich. Only three of this model were built, and only two survive. This car was in FDR's second inaugural parade and competed in the 1986 Great American Car Race. I suspect that the ornament is Lalique crystal, but I have no confirmation of that. (Update: The item is Lalique, a design known as 'Chrysis', see comment by sjb4photos below)

Processing consisted primarily of converting to black and white and cropping down from the 35mm frame. The background of the shot was green grass and I was able to turn that into a subtle background light. One change I might make is to crop just a bit more from the right to create a square image. I've also toyed with the idea of cloning out part of the hood of the car on the left, leaving just the mascot on the pedestal.

See more information about this image and the car on my blog

Jazz is a musical style that originated at the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States. It was born out of a confluence of African and European music traditions.

This is another shot of Catherine (one of my co-workers) highlighting her style and some new clothing she purchased on a recent trip (another shot www.flickr.com/photos/samuelrussell/7400518816/in/photost...). I had Cat walk towards me and just fired off a few shots. I like how the purse is positioned just right in the bottom corner. I also shot this at f/2 which I don't often do (since it's easy to miss focus when it's that shallow) but I wanted to blur that background out a lot.

I found it interesting to compare 1928 dresses with those of 1917. These were in the September 1928 Country Gentleman.
